VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton WRITTEN BY: Izhan Arif
From “Papoy” to prison breaks, these yellow chaos machines have delivered endless laughs across the “Despicable Me” and “Minions” movies. We're counting down the most hilarious moments from the franchise, including banana-fueled singalongs, botched heroics, awkward interrogations, and wildly unhinged schemes. Which Minion scene always cracks you up? Let us know in the comments below! Our countdown includes “Dave is in Love with Lucy,” “King Bob's Entrance,” “Minion Idol,” “The Firefighters,” “Prison Break,” and more! From evil masterminds to accidental mayhem, these little henchmen never miss a chance to turn disaster into comedy.

#30: Summoning a Monster

“Minions & Monsters” (2026)

Minions and supernatural magic don’t exactly mix. In this scene, they try to bring a Cthulhu-style monster into the world to make an epic creature feature, but it doesn’t quite work. They do get a monster called Goomi, so the plan’s technically successful, but he doesn’t look as menacing as they thought. Even though he does have some serious powers he’s still basically just a baby-fied Cthulhu. There’s also a hilarious moment where the minions summon a cute looking bunny only for that to be far more scary than they thought. Minions bumbling around trying to unleash monsters on the earth is inherently silly. Plus, it’s funnier when they don’t get the results they’re expecting. Maybe save the sinister sorcery for the professionals!

#29: Trying to Be Heroes

“Despicable Me 4” (2024)

Superheroes are awesome but not everyone can be a superhero. The mega minions tried and look at how that turned out. There’s an entire montage of the would-be heroes epically failing to do good. It’s got iconic moments like Dave accidentally injuring the victim of a robbery, and Tim trying to recreate the epic train scene from “Spider-Man 2” but just totally crashing and burning. We also can’t forget when a window washer is in danger and Gus’ rescue plan is to finish cleaning the dude’s window and leave him high and dry. These super screwups create so much comedy through their various botched rescue missions it’s kind of incredible. The mega minions had good intentions but man, they totally suck as costumed crime fighters!

#28: Fashion Fail

“Minions” (2015)

In a scene where the minions pull up from the sea we can spot most of them sporting goggles and skirts. Norbert on the other hand doesn’t have a grass skirt on which leads him to awkwardly stumble for a bit to find a solution. That solution in question is a pair of starfish that he covers his chest with. Does Norbert look ridiculous? Yes, yes he does. Hey it’s some pretty unconventional problem solving but at least it’s something. Plus, getting to watch him try to recover from such a potentially disastrous situation is an entertaining experience. All the minions are oddballs but Norbert and his fashion emergencies are a special breed of goofy. Always make sure to wear appropriate clothing!

#27: Slap Fight

“Despicable Me” (2010)

While assisting Gru in his scheme to adopt his eventual daughters, the minions quickly turn from partners-in-crime to enemies. Sure one second they’re having fun messing around and forging credentials, the next it’s a full-on brawl! Violence is never the answer, but minion-on-minion violence is a recipe for laughs. What is this? “Fight Club” for kids? The silly slap fighting even messes up Gru’s fake credentials and confuses Miss Hattie, the woman in charge of the adoption. Any scheme is built off collaboration, and unfortunately the minions just did not want to collaborate at all here. Fortunately for us though we were treated to an absolute gut buster of a sequence. Illumination should seriously consider a “Minions vs Minions” movie!

#26: Audition Disaster

“Despicable Me 2” (2013)

Making a movie is hard, just ask any filmmaker. Or you can also just ask the minions apparently. The end credits of “Despicable Me 2” sees them auditioning for their spinoff but there’s some obstacles in their way. For starters the actual black screen for the credits keeps interrupting them. That’s one seriously creative way to derail an audition. There’s also problems that brew when two of the minions start picking a fight with each other. Ok seriously, “Minions vs Minions”, can we make that happen? The audition just devolves into anarchy as the fourth wall is broken and the minions turn on each other. The minions eventually got a whole slew of movies but hopefully making them wasn’t as chaotic as this audition was!

#25: Chaotic Filming

“Minions & Monsters” (2026)

In this newest outing for the minions, they once again find themselves dealing with movie-making. While on what clearly seems to be a big budget Hollywood production, the minions are being directed for a special fight scene against some scary looking vikings. Obviously the vikings are just a bunch of actors trying to film a fight sequence, but we’re not sure if the minions know that because they really kick the butts of their scene partners. It’s kind of wild to see how so many large menacing buff dudes get tossed around by some small maniacs. Eye-pokes, hammer bashes, dart throws, plungers to the head, there’s just no limit to the carnage that these pint-sized monsters are capable of! Minions are the ultimate method actors.

#24: Party on the Bus

“Despicable Me 4” (2024)

We all love seeing the minions get down and have fun and apparently there’s nothing that will stop them from partying. Case in point, this moment when they’re all riding a bus. From row-to-row we see the minions party like there’s absolutely no tomorrow. Unfortunately, their special blend of chaos pushes their bus driver Carl to his limit and eventually enough is enough. The way his ultra-serious drill sergeant style-demeanor clashes with the minions’ fun-loving disregard for the rules makes for some excellent comedy. Even though we love the minions, we kind of have to side with Carl on this one. Have fun, but have fun responsibly! Oh who are we kidding, the minions are going to do what they want when they want to.

#23: Fainting Minion

“Minions: The Rise of Gru” (2022)

This second “Minions” movie kept the spotlight on the minions while also showing us how their paths eventually crossed with our favorite villain-turned-hero: Gru. But there’s points in this movie where the relationship gets rocky, and things get so tense that Gru later fires the minions. It’s a shocking scene that for all intents and purposes is pretty serious, afterall, being rejected and shunned is nothing to laugh about. But then again we are dealing with minions, so even sad moments have little glimpses of humor. If you need convincing just look and you’ll see a minion fainting dramatically in the background after receiving the bad news. Young Gru is right that the minions don’t take things very seriously, but that’s part of their charm!

#22: Interrogating Otto

“Minions: The Rise of Gru” (2022)

In order to get important information relating to the Zodiac Stone out of Otto, the minions are forced to rely on some extreme methods in order to get the job done. We’ve seen police-style interrogations done countless times in movies and tv, but we’ve never seen it the minion way. When it comes to interrogating, let’s just say that Kevin, Stuart, and Bob are…well, they’re not great, but they’re hilarious to watch. Seriously, the way that they so effortlessly lose control of the situation is honestly must-see cinema. When Kevin stops Stuart from flailing Otto around and then proceeds to do the exact same thing it’s a true delight. There’s good cop, bad cop, and now there’s minion cop!

#21: The Banana Song

“Despicable Me 2” (2013)

Even if you know utterly nothing about minions, you probably know they have a thing for bananas. Not only is it an object of their fixation and a word they love saying, it’s also a song they like to sing. That’s right, they’re not just oddball henchmen, they’re also singers! In a teaser that was released to promote “Despicable Me 2”, they perform “Barbara Ann”. It’s a classic 1960s single but their version mostly just uses the word banana. This is marketing at its finest. Plus it's even more perfect because one minion gets so annoyed with the other that he punches him in the face. There might become a time when this running gag gets a little stale, but that day hasn’t come yet!

#20: Ice Cream Party

“Despicable Me 2” (2013)

We all scream for ice cream. But if you’re a Minion the sweet treat is cause for a giant celebration. We find the Minions partying it up with singing, dancing, and an endless supply of their favorite dessert. Actually, except for the choice of refreshments, it’s a scene that wouldn’t be out of place at your average frat party. Minions are never off duty though. The fun is interrupted when Gru comes to assign new tasks to several of his yellow henchmen. But a Minion knows that just because you leave the party doesn’t mean you can’t take the party with you.

#19: Jelly Factory Shenanigans

“Despicable Me 2” (2013)

In the second movie, we find the Minions hard at work at Gru’s new jelly making operation. The work may have changed, but they still know how to have fun on the job. Though obviously that comes with its own hazards. But they’re always excited to be helping Gru, and innovation is still the name of the game. Too bad this effort highlights the error in the Trial and Error process. The Minions want to be supportive, but condiments are just too important to lie about.

#18: The Stars Are Brighter

“Despicable Me 2” (2013)

How many Minions does it take to change a lightbulb? They won’t stop until they figure it out. That’s the great thing about the Minions, really, there are always as many as you need to get a job done. And as we see they really excel when it comes to teamwork. Sure, things might not always work out exactly as they’d hoped, but it’s never for lack of effort. You have to be careful what kinds of mistakes you make with the Minions, though. Their talent for creative problem solving might take an unexpected turn.

#17: The Ice Cream Truck

“Despicable Me 2” (2013)

We already know how the Minions feel about ice cream. Based on the reaction of the neighborhood kids it looks like it’s not uncommon for the local truck to be mobbed by the Minions before anyone else has a chance. All things considered, it was pretty genius to use the ice cream truck as a trap. Even when facing certain peril, these guys just cannot turn down the offer of a little frozen goodness. Maybe this is part of the reason why ice cream trucks have such an iffy reputation.

#16: Jail Song

“Despicable Me 3” (2017)

What would a road...or air...trip be without a singalong? We’ve seen that the Minions are a music-loving bunch to begin with. As they make their escape from prison, it’s only natural that they would all join in on a time-killing staple. Maybe travelling in a big heap is a little bit of a mood killer, though. The crew up top has a much more cheerful rendition going on. We get it. Economy vs. First Class? Totally different travel experience.

#15: Torture with Blerb

“Minions” (2015)

Being in a dungeon is no laughing matter. Well, unless you’re a Minion. In this scene from the 2015 spinoff, our three heroes are locked away in an ominous, intimidating, and scary-looking dungeon. A hooded executioner named Blerb – who is definitely not Herb – then proceeds to try and torture our poor little yellow friends. Luckily, the Minions find the torture devices to be ineffective, and even quite fun. This scene perfectly illustrates why we love the Minions: they don’t let even the worst situations get them down.

#14: Minions Quit Gru

“Despicable Me 3” (2017)

Early on in the third movie Gru suffers a few setbacks in his work with the Anti Villain League. That doesn’t mean he’s going to fall right back into his evil ways, though. Unfortunately, not everyone thinks that’s good news. The Minions don’t seem to find Gru quite as impressive when he’s just a normal suburban dad. In a rare moment of disagreement, they make their displeasure known to their boss. Of course, the Minions still make this funny, even if the idea of Gru without his helpers is unbelievable. It turns out to be a good day to be late to work though.

#13: Meeting the Nelsons

“Minions” (2015)

It can be hard keeping a family together, let alone keeping it happy. When the Minions come across this seemingly normal station wagon-driving family called the Nelsons, everything seems great… at first. With a free ride and plenty of apple slices, what could go wrong? However, we quickly see that this is no ordinary family. This one keeps itself together by leading a life of crime and robbery. After they rob a rural bank, the Nelsons are all too happy to have the Minions aid with their escape. The Minions just can’t seem to help themselves when it comes to explosives.

#12: The Firefighters

“Despicable Me 2” (2013)

Hey, dating is tough, we’ve all been there, and making that first move can be scary. Gru’s impulse is completely understandable. Who hasn’t wanted to torch their phone at one point or another? And, after all, what are Minions for if not to help put out a few fires? Especially the literal ones. Of course Gru’s Minions are particularly enthusiastic. Their commitment even extends to appropriate sound effects. How helpful they actually are is debatable; they seem to have caused more damage than they prevented, but you can’t deny their dedication. Or how much they seem to enjoy their job.

#11: Prison Scene

“Despicable Me 3” (2017)

Really, considering all the crazy escapades the Minions have been part of during their long lifetimes, prison is no big deal. It’s not surprising that they quickly climbed to the top of the food chain on the inside. It’s just a fact that nothing says tough like coordinated finger snapping. With the other inmates thoroughly intimidated, the Minion crew seem to enjoy calling the shots. But no matter how well they handle their new environment, they are really just missing their boss. So much so that just the mention of Gru gets them excited enough to riot. Now that’s love.

#10: King Bob’s Entrance

“Minions” (2015)

Being different can be scary. After trekking through Australia and dancing through India, the Minions make it to England, and Bob’s a little intimidated. To make him feel at home, a small wardrobe change is made. The yellow-and-blue decked crowd loves the entrance King Bob makes, but they don’t quite understand the words he’s saying. After not getting the response he expected from his probably great speech, Bob proclaims, “King Bob!” The crowd loves it. It’s only logical to follow up with a mic drop.

#9: Minions Photocopying Their Butts

“Despicable Me” (2010)

Some things are universally true. The Sun will rise, unicorns are cute, and butts are funny. This scene illustrates the very core and essence – the very soul of a Minion. What does a Minion strive for in life? What does a Minion love? Butts. These three are so distracted by their facsimile antics that they don’t even notice what’s going on behind them until it almost kills them. And yet, they still continue looking and laughing at pictures of butts, because that’s what Minions do.

#8: Prison Break

“Despicable Me 3” (2017)

Escaping prison is no sweat when you’ve got creativity, guts, and a large team of friends to bring it all together. We see the Minions apply their unique brand of genius to their situation as they prepare to spring themselves from the big house. As always, it’s an endearing mixture of efficiency and sheer dumb luck. You just have to love how nothing seems to slow them down for long. Using stolen materials from the prison laundry and bathrooms they have an escape craft ready to take off in no time. Though not before observing proper safety procedures of course. They did seem to forget a detail or two, but it’s not the Minions without a little chaos.

#7: Minions Turn Purple

“Despicable Me 2” (2013)

Purple isn’t only the color of royalty, it’s also the color of pure dog-chasing, unicorn-eating evil. In order to turn a Minion evil, one must put it through a complex and complicated procedure. Or just poke it with some purple juice. In this scene, we see how Minions are plucked from their island playground and turned against their yellow brothers. You might be terrified to see one of your brothers turn to the dark side right in front of you, but a Minion apparently finds it quite funny. That is, until he gets poked with the same thing.

#6: Island Joy

“Despicable Me 2” (2013)

Clothing is apparently optional on this island paradise. If you ever wondered what the Minions’ dream vacation would be, this is probably it. Bananas, beach, and bare butts. In this funny scene, we get to see Minions relax by playing volleyball, enjoying a cool beverage, dancing to music, and soaking up the sun. It almost all seems too good to be true. But don’t worry about that, have a banana and enjoy the water. The temperature is perfect. It’s nice to see the Minions when they’re not wreaking havoc.

#5: Minion Idol

“Despicable Me 3” (2017)

In what is honestly one of their most relatable moments, the Minions follow their appetites behind the gates of a Hollywood studio complex. While fleeing from the security guards they unexpectedly find themselves on stage at the taping of an “American Idol” style singing competition. Luckily, the Minions, though initially nervous, are ready to go with their own rendition of the famous patter song, “Modern Major General.” It’s not long before they’re caught up in the spirit of performing, adding costumes and props to their number as they go. Of course it’s a smash success. The audience may not speak Minionese, but they know talent when they see it.

#4: Minions Fail at Keeping a Boss

“Minions” (2015)

Aside from bananas and butts, all a Minion really needs is a boss. In this hilarious scene, we discover a little bit about the Minions’ past, specifically their search for an evil master. Unfortunately for them – and their bosses – the Minions are bad luck charms. Despite their attempts to better the lives of a T-Rex, a caveman, a vampire, or even Napoleon, their antics do way more harm than good. We’d kind of love to see a Minions and T-Rex movie ourselves. How about you? All in all, it’s hilarious to see their life and adventures before Gru.

#3: Dave is in Love with Lucy

“Despicable Me 2” (2013)

Frolicking on the beach, enjoying a picnic, and shooting rockets into the night sky are just a few of the things Dave thinks of when he imagines a perfect date. When Minion Dave first meets secret agent Lucy, she Kung Fus his cupcake and nearly karate chops his face, but that doesn’t deter him from seeing something special in her. Or maybe that’s what he likes. Either way, it’s love at first sight for this miniature yellow assistant. Unfortunately for Dave, a life with Lucy is not meant to be as she falls for someone else.

#2: I Swear

“Despicable Me 2” (2013)

By the moons and the stars in the sky, we swear the Minions aren’t only about yellow fruit and rear ends. They also have a soft and romantic side to them. In this scene, the Minions serenade the guests at Gru and Lucy’s wedding – and us – with a sweet, if unintelligible, rendition of a classic All-4-One song, complete with white suits and doves. What makes this scene great is how genuinely sweet it is, and how it is clear that they are happy for Gru. Also, we’re pretty sure they’re saying “underwear.”

#1: Papoy

“Despicable Me” (2010)

Never has a shopping trip looked so fun! It’s no secret that Gru isn’t the best father figure in the first “Despicable Me.” So, he needs all the help he can get when he decides to adopt Margo, Edith, and Agnes. The Minions are then sent on a very special mission to get a new unicorn toy. Or, papoy in Minion speak. Got that? Papoy, not papoy. It’s an easy mistake to make. Here we get to see the Minions go on a hilarious adventure and get into all kinds of crazy trouble. They are rocketed through a store by cola and end up singing a great rendition of “Copacabana.” All in a day’s work for these guys.
