VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton
From runway confidence to Untucked meltdowns, these queens walked into the workroom with no shortage of self-belief — and even less of a grip on reality. Join us as we count down the most gloriously delusional moments in “RuPaul's Drag Race” history, featuring queens like Alexis Michelle, Loosey LaDuca, Milk, Valentina and more! We're also revisiting unforgettable chaos from Kyne, Serena ChaCha, Derrick Barry, Trixie Mattel, Monét X Change, Mistress Isabelle Brooks, and beyond. What's the wildest case of drag delusion you've seen? Let us know in the comments below!

#20: Kyne

“Eh-laganza Eh-xtravaganza”

Kyne’s disco‑inspired runway look in the very first episode of “Canada’s Drag Race” didn’t turn out how she had envisioned. She created an outfit adorned with small golden balls along the hem, but they began falling as she walked. Attempting to stop them disrupted her movement on the runway even further. When guest judge Elisha Cuthbert criticized the look, Kyne defended it as a strong choice. Even when the other judges pointed out that the look was safe, Kyne first acknowledged it was new for her before quickly insisting that it was her signature style. The look landed her in the bottom three, although she ultimately avoided elimination that night.

#19: Vivienne Pinay

“Black Swan: Why It Gotta Be Black?”

In the episode that would ultimately be her last, Vivienne Pinay spent a significant amount of her confessional energy talking about Roxxxy Andrews; specifically, suggesting that Roxxxy might feel threatened by her. There was just one problem: Roxxxy barely seemed to register Vivienne's existence. And honestly, can you blame her? Roxxxy had a much more pressing concern in the form of Jinkx Monsoon, who was quietly dismantling the competition one week at a time. The contrast between Vivienne’s internal narrative and how the competition actually unfolded was frankly hilarious to witness. Imagining yourself as someone's biggest rival when they don't even know you're there is a special kind of delusion.

#18: Trixie Mattel

“All Stars Snatch Program”

Few queens carry as much wit and self-awareness as Trixie Mattel, which is exactly what makes this one so delicious. Heading into Snatch Game on “All Stars” 3, Trixie was brimming with confidence about her RuPaul impression. And why wouldn’t she be? She knows Ru personally, she's done the impression before, so it should've been a layup. Except it wasn't. The performance fell completely flat, and it was made all the more cringeworthy because RuPaul was right there, judging her. Trixie landed in the bottom as a result. The cruel irony of choosing to impersonate the host of the very show you're competing on and still bombing is almost poetic. Almost.

#17: Monét X Change

“10s Across the Board”

Look, we adore Monét X Change. Truly. But in the premiere episode of Season 10, her sponge dress could have justifiably landed her in the bottom. It was merely a simple piece of fabric with a clutter of yellow and green sponges scattered around. During “Untucked,” the other queens called her out on the dress, but Monét was completely unbothered, absolutely convinced the look was a serve. Here's the twist though: she wasn't entirely wrong to hold onto that delusion. Monét has since built an entire brand identity around the sponge and found a way to milk it dry. So maybe the real lesson here is that if you commit hard enough to the bit, reality adjusts itself around you.

#16: Mistress Isabelle Brooks

“Tournament of All Stars Snatch Game”

The irony of this one is particularly rich. On Season 15, Mistress Isabelle Brooks was practically the ambassador of calling out Loosey LaDuca's inflated self-perception. Fast forward to “All Stars” 10 and it was Mistress who began sipping the delusion kool-aid. For the Snatch Game, she portrayed reality TV star Natalie Nunn, a performance that was one-note, relentlessly aggressive and sorely lacking in comedic range. Despite everyone’s underwhelmed response, Mistress remained convinced she had placed well. She hadn't. In the end, the bottom two came calling, and Mistress narrowly avoided elimination. There's something almost Shakespearean about the queen who best identified delusion in others becoming the most vivid example of it herself.

#15: Miss Fame

Various Episodes

Season 7 wasn't always kind to Miss Fame in the edit. She was depicted as a queen who seemed perpetually lost in her own world. RuPaul's repeated attempts to get Fame to engage with the now-iconic "How's your head?" question became something of a running gag, with Fame consistently retreating into abstract musings rather than connecting with what was actually happening in front of her. The Bitter Old Lady Brigade – the alliance consisting of Kennedy Davenport, Ginger Minj, Jasmine Masters and Mrs. Kasha Davis – wasn't shy about poking fun at Fame's constant references to her "brand" and "aesthetic" either. There's being artistically driven, and then there's being so deep in your own vision that you forget there's a competition happening around you.

#14: Shannel

Various Episodes

Before "delusional queen" became a recognizable “Drag Race” archetype with its own fan lexicon, Shannel was quietly laying the groundwork. Throughout Season 1, she consistently pushed back against the judges' critiques, operating from a place of unshakeable certainty that she was performing at a higher level than they were giving her credit for. The vocabulary we now casually throw around – the edits, the reads, the "she thought she was that girl" commentary – wasn't fully formed yet. But looking back, Shannel fits the profile almost perfectly. She's the original blueprint, the prototype delusional queen and she honestly deserves some credit for pioneering the tradition so early.

#13: Discord Addams

Various Episodes

There were early warning signs of Discord Addams’ delusion, like in the Season 18 premiere, when she turned to Cardi B and genuinely asked whether she had done well, seemingly unaware of how that read to everyone watching. But the moment that really crystallized things came much later, during the design challenge where the queens worked with materials from eliminated contestants' wardrobes. Discord incorporated safety pins into her look, which her castmates questioned as being outside the official materials, but she remained completely unfazed by their opinions. Instead, she anchored herself to the one positive note she got from guest judge Iman, who has praised her design sensibility. Selective hearing is a powerful thing.

#12: Silky Nutmeg Ganache

Various Episodes

Bold declarations have consequences, and Silky Nutmeg Ganache learned that the hard way on Season 11. Early in the competition, she announced with full conviction that if she had landed in the bottom two, she would have demolished the lip sync. It was the kind of confident statement that practically writes its own punchline. When Silky eventually found herself in the bottom two, she faltered badly. The only reason she survived was that Nina West struggled just as much, so RuPaul decided to send her home. To Silky’s credit however, she later proved the declaration wasn't entirely hollow, as she delivered a series of incredible lip syncs on “All Stars” 6. But Season 11 Silky? She was, in fact, not ready.

#11: Derrick Barry

“RuPaul Book Ball”

Derrick Barry’s confidence has always been a signature trait, so much so that it sometimes read as delusional. During the book ball, she strutted out wearing a showgirl-inspired “paper” look she wholeheartedly believed was so good it was museum‑worthy. When she told this to her castmates backstage, they genuinely couldn’t believe their ears. The judges also weren’t convinced and Derrick landed in the bottom two and was sent home shortly after. Later on “All Stars” 5, Derrick was equally sure her impressions routine would wow judges, but it flopped hard and sent her packing immediately. There's a pattern forming here that's hard to ignore: every time Derrick publicly crowns herself before the judges can, the universe responds with a swift and decisive correction.

#10: Sasha Belle

Born Naked

Honestly, she may have been onto something here. Sasha Belle entered the competition believing that she had cracked the code to winning the show. To her, that most likely meant knowing exactly what to do to check Ru's boxes. Unfortunately, her plan didn't align with her actual experience. She found herself in the bottom in the very first episode, after misunderstanding the assignment. Things didn't get much better from there. The next week, she found herself in the same predicament, and her journey was cut short by Katya. Had Sasha just been herself, she could’ve had a better chance. The code she was speaking of could exist but it seems that hers got lost in translation.

#9: Valentina

Various Episodes

Being delusional doesn’t have to be a negative quality. There are some queens whose fantasies make them even more iconic. No one proves this more than Valentina. After her run on Season 9, she returned to All Stars with a new outlook: that what went on in her head should’ve been happening in real life too. This led to a delightful string of episodes where she was unapologetically feeling herself and firmly standing by the fantasy her mind had created. It also resulted in her being genuinely confused when judges had critiques for her runways or when she lost challenges but it didn’t take away from her charm one bit.

#8: Laganja Estranja

Various Episodes

Coming into the game with an immense level of confidence is a tricky line to walk. Some, like Valentina, make it hilarious, while others come across as fake. Laganja Estranja struggled with this during her time on Season 6. Throughout the competition, she masked any insecurity with delusional confidence. It still slipped out occasionally, from complaining about the amount of comedy challenges to being upset that her friend was succeeding. It was most obvious in her infamous stand-up set. From her performance, you can tell she thought she ate it up, when the reality showed the opposite. She’s luckily made a full recovery from her case of drag delusion, but not before it led her to snap on screen.

#7: Kennedy Davenport

Ru Hollywood Stories

The most delusional moments on the show have a way of becoming the most memorable. In Season 7’s Death Becomes Her runway, Kennedy Davenport took to the stage in an outfit that made her resemble a bedazzled fowl rather than a person. What made the bizarre look even better was her explanation for it. She had concocted a whole backstory about a woman who met a tragic fate but then crystallized instead of dying. She even doubled down on it in Untucked, making it clear that she was standing by her choice. It was obvious she had thought she killed it, only for the other queens and the audience to think otherwise.

#6: Q

Various Episodes

It’s always sad when a truly talented competitor succumbs to a case of drag delusion. Despite making it to the top 5 on Season 16 and winning two challenges, Q is mostly remembered for her less realistic moments. All throughout the season, she was unapologetic in expressing her feelings on how she thought the challenges should’ve gone. From telling Sapphira that her win in Corporate Queens was undeserved to explaining why she should’ve won the ball over Nymphia, she wasn’t afraid to make her opinions known. It was sad to see, especially for a contestant that was genuinely doing well. She let her own unrealistic desire for continuous wins cloud her experience and it didn’t make her come across well to fans either.

#5: Serena ChaCha

Various Episodes

A college education is important, but it’s not the end all be all especially when it comes to drag. Serena ChaCha came onto the show believing that her art school background would give her an edge. She proved almost immediately that wouldn’t be the case after nearly going home on the premiere episode. The next week in Untucked, her delusional sense of superiority came out when she proclaimed that the slang the others were using had to stop. She then made things worse for herself by implying that none of the other contestants were educated. She was swiftly called out by several other queens and then sent packing. It’s proof that education means little if you don’t have the experience to back it up.

#4: Joella

Various Episodes

She may not have lasted long on Season 17, but she made an impact. Joella’s delusion was bubbling under the surface from the very beginning especially when she hyped up her abilities before serving up an adequate talent show. However, it fully reared its head once she got backstage to Untucked. If she wasn’t confusing the rest of the contestants by referring to herself as a local legend or a look queen, then she was offering her unsolicited opinions to others. These sincere yet bizarre instances led to her becoming an unexpected favorite on the season, and was proof that you can delude yourself into becoming reality TV gold.

#3: Loosey LaDuca

Various Episodes

When discussing delusional queens, she’s often one of the first that fans will think of. Season 15’s Loosey LaDuca had plenty of talent, but unfortunately couldn’t take it when someone else’s was noticed. She made it clear just how infuriated she was when she placed anywhere below the top in that week’s rankings, and then walked it back after being called out. She also inflated her own statistics by counting her mini-challenge wins along with her main challenge ones. It even caused her to get into multiple fights with her competitors. It was a shame to see, given that she did well throughout the competition. However, she eclipsed her own hard work with moments of over-confidence, making it hard to root for her.

#2: Alexis Michelle

Various Episodes

You know a queen is delusional when she ignores her own success. Even after giving an outstanding performance as Kris Jenner in Reality Stars: The Musical, Alexis Michelle fixated on critiques on her look before making them the other contestants’ problem. She forced everyone to gather around, before chastising them for not telling her to wear something better. Her tirade went on for several minutes, and even prevented those actually in the bottom two from practicing the lip sync. Her overconfidence ramped up from there. It all culminated in a moment where she told Shea and Sasha that she took them choosing her to go home next as a compliment, since she was fierce competition.

#1: Milk

Various Episodes

It’s hard to see a good queen fall so hard. Throughout Season 6, Milk built a reputation as a talented yet overlooked contestant. When she returned for Season 3 of All Stars, it seemed that some of that positive attention had gotten to her. She felt slighted when she didn’t win or receive positive critiques. She lashed out on stage and cried during Untucked two unnecessary reactions given that she was safe. When she was in the bottom in The Bitchelor, her attitude only worsened as she insulted those on the chopping block with her. We’re not sure what caused Milk to spoil, but we can only hope she gets another shot to Ru-deem herself and her delusional side in another All Stars season.
