#20: “Tiny, Little Chef”
“Ratatouille” (2007)
Disney has always known that their most devoted fans are just big kids at heart, so it’s no surprise when they slip in a joke for the grown-ups. Linguini stumbles and stammers so much as he tries to reveal his big secret to Collette, that her mind races ahead. With one lightning-fast glance, the joke practically tells itself. She clearly found the whole thing funnier than she initially let on, as she can’t resist bringing up Linguini’s “tiny chef” later on, in front of the press. It’s a classic case of Disney’s double-layered humor. One for the kids, and one for the adults who never really grew up.
#19: Madam Mim vs. Merlin
“The Sword in the Stone” (1963)
The showdown between Madam Mim and Merlin is magical mayhem at its finest. Watching Merlin’s cool, logical magic clash with Mim’s gleeful rule-breaking transformations is like seeing two cartoon legends duke it out in a slapstick battle. Every transformation is a visual treat, with the animators flexing their magical muscles as the wizards morph from one wild animal to the next. Just when you think Mim’s cheating will win the day, Merlin outsmarts her with a microscopic twist that’s as clever as it is hilarious. This duel is pure animated anarchy, and it’s impossible not to laugh along. You might even find that the laughter is quite infectious.
#18: “Flowers, Chocolates... Promises You Don’t Intend To Keep”
“Beauty and the Beast” (1991)
Cogsworth might often be the voice of reason in the Beast’s enchanted household, but when it comes to courting women, we’d suggest taking his advice with a pinch of salt. The Beast, now growing fond of Belle, asks Cogsworth and Lumière how to show his appreciation. Needless to say, Cogsworth’s response starts strong, but then [1]. Yikes, who hurt you, Cogsworth? It’s certainly a jaded, weary perspective of a man who has seen too many failed relationships. Still, it’s delivered with clockwork timing, hitting you out of the blue and certainly making you chuckle if you’ve been there. The advice might be iffy, but the comedic timing is flawless, and as Cogsworth once said [2].
#17: Triple Dent Gum
“Inside Out” (2015)
We have all experienced a song getting stuck in our heads at the worst possible moment. By personifying this as two blue-collar workers (Forgetters Paula and Bobby) who choose to send the jingle up to “Headquarters” just because they feel like it, is exactly the kind of mischievous logic that feels a little too real. That’s why we love this scene, as it almost feels like the tiny workers in our heads aren’t just inefficient, they’re actively having a laugh at our expense, dropping the catchiest, most inescapable tunes right when we least need them.. And yep, you’re humming it again now, aren’t you? Sorry!
#16: Bruno’s Alter-Egos
“Encanto” (2021)
If there’s one thing the early 2020s taught us, it’s that a little isolation can bring out some truly unexpected quirks. Bruno is living proof. And it appears that during his long, isolated existence within the walls of Casita, the reclusive Madrigal has meticulously honed a truly spectacular “real gift.” No, not for prophecy, but for crafting absolutely captivating, albeit slightly unhinged characters. We meet Hernando, a persona radiating courageous bravado, and the endearing, bucket-headed Jorge, both brought to life with a sincerity that is hilariously earnest and profoundly charming. Jorge even helps the family rebuild their Casita later on. Still, you just know these two made for excellent telenovela binge buddies
#15: A-Dress-ing Creative Differences
“Sleeping Beauty” (1959)
Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather may be the fairy godmothers of fate, but take away their wands and suddenly they’re every bickering family you’ve ever met. Watching Flora champion her dream for Aurora’s birthday dress while Merryweather fires back is sibling rivalry at its finest and most relatable. Flora doesn’t miss a beat, snapping back, still managing to sound positively royal while delivering a slap. Meanwhile, Fauna’s cake disaster in the background is the sprinkles on this comic cake. These fairies can quite literally keep evil at bay yet they’re completely defeated by household tasks. The whole scene is hilarious setting the stage for the legendary pink-versus-blue magic battle that follows.
#14: “I’m Free! I'm Free! Dang It!”
“The Hunchback of Notre Dame” (1996)
Even in one of their darkest films, Disney can’t resist slipping in a brilliant running gag. As Esmeralda makes her daring escape from Frollo’s relentless guards, we’re treated to the recurring misadventures of the Old Prisoner, a character whose luck is as fleeting as his freedom. Whether he’s tumbling out of a stockade or dropping through a manhole marked “Mon Sewer,” his momentary hope is always dashed by a swift return to captivity and a perfectly delivered ‘Dang it!’ It’s a masterstroke of physical comedy that lingers long after the credits roll. For many fans, it’s the reason why “Dang it” is our go-to phrase when fortune turns against us.
#13: Flynn vs. Maximus
“Tangled” (2010)
Rapunzel shows that, armed with a frying pan, she can hold her own pretty early on. Still, while she eventually warms up to Flynn, Maximus is having none of it, well, not yet. The rivalry between Flynn and Max is the comedic heartbeat of “Tangled,” and it’s anything but your typical Disney sidekick dynamic. Instead of the usual loyal animal companion, Max is a relentless, justice-obsessed foil who treats Flynn like his personal nemesis. Their silent, over-the-top bickering channels the best mismatched buddy-cop movies of the 80s, with every chase and glare packed with personality. It’s a rivalry for the ages, and not one Flynn can simply smolder his way out of.
#12: Dory Speaks Whale
“Finding Nemo” (2003)
If you ever listed ‘speaks Whale’ under special skills on your resume, you’re definitely a “Finding Nemo” kid. Dory’s attempt to get help from a passing whale is peak Pixar comedy: she puffs up, belts out those legendary loooooong syllables, and leaves Marlin in a state of pure panic. Of course, at this point in the franchise, we have zero reason to believe she can actually speak Whale, but she dives in with the confidence of a pro. It’s the kind of unearned self-assurance we all wish we had, and somehow, it works. Mostly. Too bad she didn’t have time to add “please don’t eat us” to her vocabulary.
#11: “Quit Telling Everyone I'm Dead”
“Brother Bear” (2003)
You know those old married couples who’ve been together so long that bickering is basically their love language? Like Mabel, this ever-dry matriarch, who keeps insisting her husband has passed on, much to his loud dismay, since he’s right there and would very much like her to stop announcing his demise. Mabel’s deadpan follow-up is the perfect punchline, as if the idea of his absence sounds a bit more peaceful than the reality. It taps into the classic caricature of marital indifference, serving a brief yet razor-sharp bit of observational humor that feels relatable and genuinely funny. No surprise it ended up living on as a meme.
#10: Anything Olaf Says
“Frozen” franchise (2013-)
We know what you’re thinking, but we couldn’t choose just one moment! Olaf’s childlike and curious nature, paired with voice actor Josh Gad’s impeccable timing and improvisational skills, makes for comedy gold. From the minute he meets Anna and Kristoff, it’s obvious we’re in for a good time. And it isn’t long before he reveals his favorite season through song! A snowman obsessed with summer?! It’s too good. He keeps the hilarity up in the sequel, too. “When I Am Older” is a tune every adult giggles at. His search for the nonexistent Samantha is genius. And who could forget his spot-on reenactment of the first movie’s events?! We’re not saying Olaf could be a stand-up comedian, but we’re not not saying it!
#9: "Put That Thing Back Where It Came From or So Help Me"
"Monsters, Inc." (2001)
How do you cover your tracks when you get caught arguing about something super secret? You pretend you’re rehearsing for a musical, of course! At least, that’s what Mike and Sulley do to hide the fact that they have a human kid named Boo in their care. The characters are obviously making the whole thing up, and it’s pure, catchy entertainment for us. The fact that there’s a version of the film’s credits that includes the production being performed for real is just the cherry on top. Honestly though, we’re still waiting for the official Broadway premiere of “Put That Thing Back Where It Came From or So Help Me”! Who do we need to call to make that happen?
#8: Timon & Pumbaa as Distractions
"The Lion King" (1994)
“The Lion King” is one of Disney’s darker, more somber movies. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t instances of comic relief. This one comes courtesy of our favorite meerkat and warthog duo, Timon and Pumbaa. Upon returning to the Pride Lands, Simba must make sure the hyenas, who work for his evil, murderous uncle Scar, don’t notice him. So he enlists his friends’ services. Enter Timon with this witty quip: [SB: “what do you want me to do, dress in drag and do the hula?”]. Cue the cut to him doing exactly that, while singing a completely absurd tune to boot! Is there anyone who can watch this scene with a straight face? Maybe, but we’ve certainly never met them! The shtick may be born out of necessity, but boy is it funny.
#7: “Where’s My Super Suit?”
“The Incredibles” (2004)
We’ve all been there. You’re looking for a specific outfit, but it’s not in its usual spot. In Frozone’s case, that outfit just happens to be his Super Suit, and he decides to ask his wife Honey where it is. On the surface, it’s a simple set up. But the exchange itself is one of the most side-splittingly hilarious things we’ve ever seen. Everything from the way he screams the question to the iconic attitude she replies with from off-screen feels like a master class in comedy. It’s over the top, it’s punchy, and a lot of married couples probably find it pretty relatable, too! People still quote the scene today, which tells you everything you need to know!
#6: The Princess Scene
“Ralph Breaks the Internet” (2018)
Funnily enough, you could say this scene broke the Internet! One needs only watch it once to see why. When Vanellope ends up in a room full of iconic Disney Princesses (official and honorary), a truly unforgettable affair plays out. All of our favorite heroines are featured, including Belle, Ariel, Jasmine, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Elsa, Anna, – the list goes on! As they interrogate and ultimately get to know Vanellope, they cleverly unpack and expertly mock a bunch of tropes and gender stereotypes that often permeate fairy tales. Even better, most (though not all) of the characters are voiced by their original actors. We’re talking Paige O'Hara, Linda Larkin, Mandy Moore, Idina Menzel, and more! It doesn’t get more meta or hysterical than that.
#5: Hades’ Endless Supply of Sass
“Hercules” (1997)
As far as Disney villains go, Hades is definitely among the funniest. He has a slew of quotable moments that get us chuckling – yes, we know he’s super duper evil, but he’s just so entertaining! Half the time, it’s not even what he’s saying so much as how he’s saying it. Shout out to James Woods for the flawless voice performance! One of our favorite examples of his sass comes when Meg is trying to convince him that Hercules is different, and would never hurt her like her ex did. As you can imagine, Hades is not convinced, and he lets her know it. Is it a little harsh? Sure, but it’s also a timeless, riotous observation.
#4: Mushu Rants About Honor
“Mulan” (1998)
We’ve come to expect pure hilarity from Eddie Murphy, but he exceeds our wildest expectations as Mushu. The little red dragon’s personality is larger than life, as evidenced by his and Mulan’s first meeting. He does not take kindly to being compared to a lizard, for one! And when the protagonist knocks him to the floor after he brings up his ability to see through her armor, he goes on about honor – or dishonor, to be exact. It’s loud, it’s nonsensical, it’s chaotic. In other words, it’s the ideal recipe for endless laughs. Mushu isn’t the only one who knows how to crack us up, though. Grandmother Fa making her affection for Li Shang known never gets old. Talk about a fun group!
#3: The DMV Sloths
“Zootopia” (2016)
They’re icons, they’re scholars, they’re…sloths who work for the DMV, of course! That's the Department of Mammal Vehicles, FYI. This scene works on so many levels. Naturally, it pokes fun at how long it takes to get things done at the department of motor vehicles. Beyond that though, the sloths themselves are legendary, acted and animated to perfection. Nick’s buddy Flash – yes, that is his real name – in particular steals the show. Each slow movement and dragged out word has us living, crying from cackling so much. The fact that Judy is so frustrated she could burst somehow makes the whole thing even more comical. Can you even imagine the movie without this moment? It simply wouldn’t be the same!
#2: Aladdin Meets Genie
“Aladdin” (1992)
They say first impressions are everything. Genie definitely got that memo, and doesn’t disappoint when Aladdin lets him out of the lamp! The sidekick is hilariously extravagant in everything he does, and his formal introduction is no exception. Indeed, the first words out of his mouth are pure comedic goodness. He keeps the humor coming from there, delivering epic impressions and quotes. By the end, he practically has us on the floor in stitches, struggling to breathe. The late great Robin Williams gave the performance his all, improvising and fully committing to the bit. It paid off in spades. We’d be lying if we said we don’t sometimes rewind the movie to watch this scene on a loop. Once just isn’t enough!
Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
“Hei Hei,” “Moana” (2016)
As Moana Says, “Sometimes Our Strength Lies Beneath the Surface. Far Beneath”
Baymax Needs Repairs, “Big Hero 6” (2014)
The High-Stakes Life-or-Death Tension Gets Hilariously Punctured by a Giant Whistling Marshmallow
Ariel Brushes Her Hair, “The Little Mermaid”
A Dinglehopper? At the Dinner Table? How Convenient!
“Sad Strange Little Man,” “Toy Story” (1995)
A Little Improv Goes a Long Way
“Cartographer, Linguist, Plumber,” “Atlantis: The Lost Empire” (2001)
Savagely Hilarious!
#1: “Pull the Lever, Kronk”
“The Emperor’s New Groove” (2000)
The villainous Yzma and her clueless henchman Kronk provide us with some truly rib-tickling moments throughout “The Emperor’s New Groove.”. But this one takes the cake. The duo need to get to the secret lab, so she gives him a straightforward order – except in true Kronk fashion, he doesn’t quite get it right. Hearing Yzma scream as she falls is endlessly entertaining. She then proceeds to re-emerge, completely soaked, crocodile in tow, and looking like she’s been through it. You could watch the scene a thousand times (seriously, we have), and it never gets less amusing or farcical. We’re not sure how much it cost Yzma to get those levers installed, but we know they’re absolutely priceless in terms of entertainment value.
