Top 20 Funniest Movie Labor Scenes Ever

Welcome to MsMojo, and today, we’re looking at the movie birthing scenes that delivered the biggest belly laughs.
#20: Family Water Birth
“Barry Munday[a][b]” (2010)
Despite its talented cast, this film’s premise is as bizarre as it gets. The titular character deals with losing his, err, family jewels, while expecting a child with a woman he can’t remember being with. Considering all this, the equally bizarre delivery scene does feel fitting. Caught off guard by the baby’s sudden arrival, the parents-to-be are forced to improvise. Everything from screaming family members to annoying whale noises get in their way. Still, everyone manages to pull together just enough for this wacky delivery to end on a heartwarming note.
#19: Three at a Time
“My Baby's Daddy” (2004)
This comedy centers around three friends on an outlandish road to fatherhood. So, an over-the-top birthing scene is just what the doctor ordered. The three becoming fathers at the same time is definitely a stretch, but that’s the least of the film’s concerns. As each expectant mother reaches her breaking point, the characters come up with wildly inventive and contrasting solutions. Would you prefer a delivery room where everyone jams to their favorite song? Or is giving birth in a department store more your speed? Perhaps a home birth where the mom ends up biting the dad? Whichever works for you, the film has you covered with its hilariously absurd approach to the chaos of childbirth.
#18: Self-Delivery
“Wanderlust” (2012)
Starring Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston, “Wanderlust” follows their characters as they end up in a hippie commune. Embracing the “free love” lifestyle, Rudd is open to the advances of a woman he’s attracted to. The only catch? She’s in the middle of labor. While you might expect her to be in distress, it’s Rudd who struggles to keep it together. Then again, watching someone casually deliver her own baby isn’t exactly something you see every day. The extreme contrast between their reactions leaves us in stitches. And just as the baby arrives, it’s time for Rudd to pass out, providing the scene with the perfect climax.
#17: Home Delivery
“Are We Done Yet?” (2007)
As it usually goes in movies, things get out of hand at the worst time. In this case, Ice Cube’s wife goes into labor, forcing the family to have a home birth. With help far away, the only option is to follow instructions over the phone. However, that proves easier said than done. With no stomach for this sort of thing, Ice Cube is more than out of his element. It isn’t long before the protagonist loses consciousness, and we’re wondering who really needs a doctor here. Just when you think it couldn’t get any more random, Magic Johnson of all people comes calling. But this is a family film, so everything works out in the end.
#16: Big Momma Takes Charge
“Big Momma's House” (2000)
Anthony Anderson[c][d] and Nia Long[e][f] were expecting parents in our earlier entries, but they’re part of the delivery crew here. In a room filled with clueless individuals, it falls onto Martin Lawrence’s Big Momma to get the job done. Of course, it’s a trial-and-error process with a whole lot of errors, as Big Momma painfully finds out. Before you know it, our pregnant lady finds herself being treated like a dish about to be served for dinner. Anderson’s character gets the brunt of her ire, including a literal foot in his mouth. The deafening screams and frantic energy almost make you forget we’re witnessing the birth of a child. Still, all’s well that ends well, as the little one’s arrival melts all the tension away.
#15: Good vs. Bad
“What to Expect When You're Expecting” (2012)
All deliveries are different. For some, it’s a pretty painful process – for others, it’s as easy as a sneeze. At least that’s what this rom-com tells us. We watch three women in labor with varying degrees of intensity. Where Elizabeth Banks is potentially at risk, Brooklyn Decker coasts through her delivery. Meanwhile, Cameron Diaz treats us to a live rendition of the most bloodcurdling scream you can imagine. The film blends the usual comedy tropes with a soft dose of reality, giving the scene a funny but meaningful quality. There’s also the standard “blaming the father” moment – just not the way anyone would see coming.
#14: Squid Baby
“Men in Black” (1997)
The aliens in the “Men in Black” universe usually disguise themselves as humans. That doesn’t apply to a newborn, though, as Agent J learns the hard way. While Agent K questions the father, J has to deal with the struggles of alien childbirth. Let’s just say it doesn’t go well. We’re not sure what species it belongs to, but kudos to the mother for powering through. With a fixed camera in place, the scene comically contrasts K and the father’s casual banter with J’s desperate attempts to survive. It’s all worth it, though, as everyone welcomes the surprisingly adorable squid baby to the world. So, does that technically make it an Earth baby? We’ll let you decide.
#13: Baby Trouble
“Look Who's Talking” (1989)
This labor process takes longer than most. Starting from a cab ride, Kirstie Alley’s character gets put through the wringer. Her short temper doesn’t help matters either, as John Travolta tries to navigate through the city’s chaotic streets. The comedy of errors continues at the hospital, from mistaking Travolta as the father to looking for a doctor. Unlike most comedies, there’s no shrieking and thrashing during this birth. Instead, the film goes the other way, as both mother and baby’s inhibitions fly out the window. Depicting childbirth through a cartoonish lens might seem bizarre, but it’s the sort of whimsical comedy that made “Look Who’s Talking”’ such a success.
#12: It’s a Boy
“The Women” (2008)
Ever heard the phrase “music to the ears”? Well, you’re not going to think of that during this scene. While she never fully loses composure, Debra Messing belts it out like you wouldn’t believe. And the mother-to-be’s friends also start panicking around her. It’s the point of the movie where all the plot threads resolve themselves, so tensions are running high. It might be difficult to keep up with all that’s happening, but one thing’s for sure: this kid needs to come out ASAP. In an all-female film filled with twists, the labor scene gives us one more: it’s a boy!
#11: “It’s an Addams”
“Addams Family Values” (1993)
If you think you know how movie labor scenes work, then you better think again. As they always do, the Addams family flips everything on its head. Thanks to their taste for the macabre, any chance of pain is a welcome prospect. Far from worrying for their mother, the children have an amusingly blunt approach to the situation. To call it a smooth delivery would be putting it lightly, as Morticia makes the birthing process look like the easiest thing in the world. Fans love the way this clan surprises us time and again – and Baby Pubert’s grand entry definitely doesn’t disappoint.
#10: Sleeping Pills
"Father of the Bride Part II" (1995)
The days leading up to labor can be draining for the whole family, but compensating for that lack of sleep can be hazardous. Stressed by the simultaneous pregnancies of his daughter and his wife, George is understandably exhausted. Reaching the end of his rope, George vents to his friend Franck, who gives him a seemingly simple solution – sleeping pills. Underestimating their effectiveness, George passes out cold almost immediately after taking them, and sure enough, his daughter goes into labor shortly afterwards. Hilarity ensues as George is dragged to the car, where from the passenger seat, his unconscious body nearly causes an accident and a fight with some strangers. Things don’t slow down once they’re at the hospital though, as his wife shortly goes into labor as well.
#9: “I Want My Larry”
"Junior" (1994)
Childbirth can make any mother aggressive, but imagine the dangers of being around a man the size of Arnold Schwarzenegger when he goes into labor. Enjoying some peace and quiet at a retreat for expectant mothers, Alex, the father-to-be in this gender-swapping comedy, feels the baby coming. Suddenly, his not so elaborate female cover is a lot harder to keep up. Yet, when he starts yelling for Larry, it’s with such intensity that no one would question the fact that Larry MUST be the father. Arnie is in fine form in this scene, delivering perfectly over-the-top physical comedy as his character breathes through the pain.
#8: A Last Minute Marriage
"Lethal Weapon 4" (1998)
When a pregnant woman makes a request… you should listen. That goes DOUBLE when she’s already in labor. By the time Riggs arrives at the hospital, Lorna is already deep into her contractions, and her demands kick into high gear. Clearly distressed, Lorna grabs another patient's IV before asking Riggs to marry her. It’s a deeply touching moment, perfectly undercut when she hilariously begins insisting that they get married that very moment or there is no baby. Finding a bemused but ultimately accommodating rabbi, they wind up getting unofficially married in the hallowed halls of the hospital, complete with a broken glass and a “Mazel tov.”
#7: The Miracle of Birth
"Monty Python's The Meaning of Life" (1983)
Opening their bizarre comedy on a memorable note, the Monty Python crew notice their delivery room is far too empty. Demanding handfuls of machines including an expensive one and a beeping one, they clearly have a very detached understanding of their role as medical professionals, so much so that they initially forget that they need a patient. Doing absurdist comedy the way only they can, the men of Monty Python then deliver the baby violently and with plenty of aggressively honest commentary. They end off by waving the baby in the mother’s face in a way you wouldn’t want to revisit, be it on VHS, Super 8 or Betamax. Shocking… but funny.
#6: Delivery a la Dr. Kosevich[g][h]
"Nine Months" (1995)
It’s important to make a good entrance, and boy does this pair have it down to an art form. Entering the hospital, Rebecca flies right across the floor on her wheelchair, ending up in another patient's room before Sam comes after her. Finding out that the inexperienced Dr. Kosevich will be handling delivery, they whine and yell, scaring him into ranting about the packed hospital before admitting it's his first birth. As Rebecca starts freaking out at a doctor so incompetent he doesn't know what an epidural is, their friend Gail tears her husband a new one in the heat of her pregnancy. It’s double the mayhem in this delivery room, and twice the laughs.
#5: The Taxi Ride to the Hospital
"How to Be Single" (2016)
Births don't always wait for a convenient time. While that can be a serious headache in real life, on film it’s an opportunity to get creative with the laughs. With Meg's water breaking in the street, Robin commits life and limb to scoring a taxi for the ready-to-pop mother-to-be. Vacillating between supportive friend and wildly immature, Robin simultaneously holds onto the phone and the panicked future mother with their friend Alice while giving genuinely helpful updates about the progress of the birth. Her inconsistent care of Meg reaches its comedic climax when, unable to open the car door, she hurls herself and the pregnant mother out the window before realizing the door was just locked. At least she’s dedicated… right?
#4: A Water Birth Exorcism
"The Back-up Plan" (2010)
If you have anyone committed to all-natural methods in your life, well… enjoy this moment! While Zoe and Stan try to adjust to the parental experience as outlined by the Single Mothers and Proud group, fellow member Lori starts her water birth, which proves to be a LOT for Zoe. Screaming, she insists Zoe is her focal point, forcing the terrified mother-to-be to stay in the room while she goes demonic. Grabbing Zoe, Lori does what can only be described as her best exorcism impression. The final push proves so hard to watch that Zoe faints into the birthing pool as the baby comes out. Not exactly a great sales pitch for the expectant mother!
#3: Angie Describes the Feeling of Labor
"Baby Mama" (2008)
The universe has some very gross ways of getting people back together. After almost parting ways following a legal battle, Kate and Angie work together when Angie's water breaks. Angie is uncharacteristically serene, right up until her arrival at the emergency room that is... when she gives one of the most hauntingly visual analogies for a birth ever. Yelling at cops and destroying hospital equipment on her way down the hall, she certainly manages to get the attention of the nursing staff. It’s the chaos, beauty, and humor of birth served up all at once, as only Amy Poehler[i][j] and Tina Fey could present it.
#2: A Two-Man Job
"Bridget Jones's Baby" (2016)
When you can't get a ride, you have to make do with whatever, or rather whoever, is available. Detracting ever so slightly from the heroics of his gesture, Mark has to stop to breathe when the weight of a very pregnant Bridget becomes too much. He's finally relieved by Jack, who smugly takes over before realizing exactly what he's signed up for. Calling Mark back for what he calls a two-man job, the pair finally gets Bridget to the hospital before getting stuck in the doors. Twisting her inside, they arrive so exhausted they almost throw her on the counter. It’s unglamorous, but then again, Bridget’s life has always been a comedy of errors.
#1: Alison: The Mother of All Mothers
"Knocked Up" (2007)
A word of advice: don't critique a pregnant woman. Alison is already far along when the doctor comes in to help. Pleading for an epidural, Alison insists she can stop the birth just to make sure she can get one, even though it's clear she's past the point of no return. As she expresses her pain like a banshee, one of the doctors tries to get her to bring it down a notch, which proves a BIG mistake. Barely able to keep it together, she focuses all her rage and yells Jay right out of the room. Alison owns that delivery room… which is a point she makes hilariously clear to every man in there.
