#20: Galactus

“The Fantastic Four: First Steps” (2025)

He’s the devourer of worlds, the consumer of the cosmos, and one feared supervillain overall. We’ve been waiting a very long time for Galactus to finally show up in the MCU, and we had a few concerns. None of us wanted him to be another cloud like the last version. Thankfully this time he wasn't. When he’s on screen we feel the power he possesses and the danger he presents. The whole movie is about trying to stop him from invading the Fantastic Four’s world and the threat feels real. He’s also far more comic accurate in this version. From the first meeting to the final fight, he means business. Galactus could be a big bad for the entire MCU, so here’s hoping he returns!

#19: Jean Grey

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” (2026)

Technically, when Peter Parker first encounters this telepath, it isn’t face to face. Peter instead faces several everyday New Yorkers who this unseen enemy has taken control of. Every time Peter catches up to her, she slips into another body, which makes the chase all the more unsettling. Sometimes, she makes it clear to Peter who he’s talking to. Other times, she blends right in with Peter being none the wiser. Peter finally gets a look at the enemy he’s been tracking, finding it’s a redheaded young woman who isn’t much older than he is. In time, Peter manages to put a name to the face, leading to two of the film’s biggest bombshells: 1) She’s Jean Grey and 2) her middle name is Elaine.

#18: Namor

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (2022)

Comic-book fans know that Namor toes the line between good and evil, and when he first showed up in “Wakanda Forever” he played the role of the bad guy, and he did it incredibly well. Both he and his underwater kingdom of Talokan brought the fight to Wakanda and nearly took down Shuri who became the new Black Panther in this movie. Namor was vicious, arrogant, yet also incredibly strategic and powerful. He was a ferocious force of nature and easily one of Marvel’s most bloodthirsty kings. Even though he was created first, Namor has sometimes been considered an Aquaman ripoff, but we doubt anyone’s making that mistake now. Fans wanted to see Namor in the MCU for years, and this debut did not disappoint!

#17: The High Evolutionary

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (2023)

There are some villains who have justifiable motives for what they do, but not this guy. The very second we meet the High Evolutionary we know he’s one rotten apple. He’s obsessed with experimentation: torturing innocent animals in order to achieve perfection. He put Rocket Raccoon and others through misery and didn’t have an ounce of compassion at any point. Other villains might have stylish debuts but High Evolutionary has a cruel and chilling introduction. He’s simply an irredeemable person and the whole time we’re watching “Guardians 3” we’re just hoping Rocket will slice him to shreds. Immediately from the beginning, we discover that the High Evolutionary is pure evil and not many MCU villains can earn our hatred this quickly.

#16: Doctor Octopus

“Spider-Man: No Way Home” (2021)

Yes, Doc Ock’s technically a villain from the Sam Raimi “Spider-Man” movies which predated the MCU, but “No Way Home” broke all the rules. It folded him, Green Goblin, Electro, and more into the mix. So when Otto showed up to the MCU to battle Tom Holland’s Spider-Man it was a spectacle. The multi-armed crazed genius brought the fight to Spidey and kept fans on the edge of their seats. Alfred Molina hadn’t played Doc Ock in years, but once he returned for this movie it was like he never missed a step. While Otto became a good guy by the end of this film he also proved he could still be a formidable foe. Maybe it’s nostalgia, but this re-introduction was special.

#15: The Real Mandarin

“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” (2021)

While Trevor Slattery was a funny bait-and-switch, a lot of fans didn’t like how “Iron Man 3” reduced the Mandarin to a joke. Fast forward to “Shang Chi” and that problem was eventually corrected. Tony Leung’s Xu Wenwu arrived and fans rejoiced because it meant that the Mandarin was finally here. And spoiler alert: he’s awesome. The prologue immediately establishes the power he has, and over the course of the movie we also see how much he cherishes his family. A lot of villains only care about themselves, but not Wenwu. The real Mandarin is such a breath of fresh air, it’s just a shame he never battled Tony Stark. If the MCU ever reboots Iron Man, then he needs to fight this iconic rival!

#14: Killmonger

“Black Panther” (2018)

Michael B. Jordan’s first time as a Marvel character with the Human Torch was a bumpy beginning. Thankfully after “Fantastic Four” his fire was rekindled and he got a second life in “Black Panther” as Erik Killmonger. Killmonger was like nothing the MCU had seen up until this point. He was a charismatic and strategic bad guy with motives that many fans resonated with. He wasn’t just robbing museums or trying to take the throne for the heck of it. His ultimate goal was to empower the disenfranchised. Killmonger wasn’t just a cool bad guy, he was a mirror of T’Challa and someone who wanted to create a revolution. These details are what make him one of the most beloved villains in the entire MCU.

#13: Agatha Harkness

“Wandavision” (2021)

When we’re first introduced to Agatha, she seems to be nothing more than a nosy neighbour, played delightfully by Kathryn Hahn. That is, until she makes a much darker re-introduction towards the season’s end, where she reveals that she is and always has been a witch, one with a great interest in Wanda’s power. While that’s all kinds of sinister, it’s the accompanying musical montage that really seals the deal. Taking inspiration from the great surf rock songs of the past, as well as iconic spooky TV theme songs like “The Addams Family” and “The Munsters,” we get to see Agatha work her magic behind the scenes and cause chaos for all involved. Only Agatha could get away with busting out a top-charting song that ends with an admission of killing a dog!

#12: Kingpin

“Daredevil” (2015-18)

Some might argue that a mob boss is a tired trope, but when Wilson Fisk shows up we can't help but cower in fear. Kingpin’s just that scary. When he appears in Netflix’s acclaimed “Daredevil” show, he’s not sporting a stylish supervillain costume or wielding an infinity gauntlet. He’s just attending late night business meetings and, you know, ripping people’s heads off with car doors. He also manipulated FBI agent Benjamin Poindexter and indirectly created Bullseye, another iconic MCU villain. Fisk’s evil is methodical and calculated, but every so often the mask slips and we get peeks into his monstrous rage. He’s not as powerful as Thanos, but he’s easily one of the MCU’s best villains, and that’s not an exaggeration.

#11: Winter Soldier

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (2014)

Though Bucky Barnes is usually considered to be on the side of the angels, he spent a serious amount of time doing villainous things. Case in point: his tenure as the Winter Soldier. In the second “Captain America” movie, we revisit Bucky as a brainwashed assassin for HYDRA. He coldly kills just about anyone in his way and brings the fight to Captain America and his allies. The Winter Soldier is a sleek badass to put it lightly. Seriously, remember the scene where he catches Cap’s shield like it’s nothing? Words can’t describe just how much aura this dude has! Over the course of multiple movies, Bucky is eventually redeemed but ultimately his past actions as Winter Soldier have had devastating effects on the MCU.

#10: Arthur Harrow

“Moon Knight” (2022)

Cult leaders are always terrifying when it comes to the stranglehold they have over their disciples, though Harrow takes things up a notch given his power to judge those for sins that have yet to come to pass. Originally an avatar of Khonshu, he now serves Ammit, who has no hesitation when it comes to killing those for what they may or may not do later in life. This is made abundantly clear as Steven Grant watches among the crowd as Harrow goes about judging members of his flock. While one gets off scot free, another is not so lucky. Harrow may be charismatic, but it doesn’t take away from his condoning of these mystical executions.

#9: Mysterio

“Spider-Man: Far From Home” (2019)

When we’re first introduced to Quentin Beck, he easily falls into the archetype of a typical hero indistinguishable from the rest, seeking aid from Peter Parker while filling the hole of a mentor figure left behind by Tony Stark. That is…until his true colours are revealed. Mysterio’s switch up as the film’s antagonist was wild, even for those familiar with the comics. A master illusionist, Beck swiftly showcases that in reality – he’s a shallow, egotistical, sore loser with one hell of a vendetta against Stark. The change is sudden, sharp, and somehow grossly endearing. He made a fool of everyone and relished every moment of his deception.

#8: Gorr the God Butcher

“Thor: Love and Thunder” (2022)

Anyone who's anyone will tell you that Gorr was by far the best part of Thor’s ill-fated fourth outing, with an origin story bound in grief. After his daughter dies from the inhospitable conditions of their home world, a distraught Gorr comes face to face with his own God, who is less than sympathetic to his plight. Enraged, Gorr decides to go all in on deicide, using the power of the Necro-Sword to slaughter the deity then and there, before setting out on a god-killing crusade.

#7: Cassandra Nova

“Deadpool & Wolverine” (2024)

When your entrance consists of walking out of Ant-Man’s giant skull, poking Deadpool’s brain with bare fingers, and instantly removing the skin from Johnny Storm’s body, you know you’ve met a villain that’s not to be trifled with. As the twin of Charles Xaiver, Cassandra has unmatched telekinetic abilities, the kind that allows her to destroy even a pair of mutants with extreme self-regeneration. With hardly any effort at all, she breaks down both Wade and Logan, forcing them to flee with their tails between their legs. Too bad Johnny wasn’t as lucky.

#6: Hela

“Thor: Ragnarok” (2017)

Moments after Odin’s death, Thor and Loki are greeted with the unexpected and unwelcome sight of their sister – the infamous Goddess of Death, who wastes no time in revealing just how powerful she really is. When you can stop Mjolnir one handed before crushing it to smithereens, you’ve earned the right to be smarminess incarnate. Of course, Hela was only just getting started, since she not only sent both brothers tumbling through the bifrost, but went about laying waste to Asgard by her lonesome.

#5: Ronan

“Guardians of the Galaxy” (2014)

There are Kree zealots, and then there’s Ronan. The Accuser is almost single-minded in his hatred towards Xander and Kree superiority, which he demonstrated in his first scene in the bloodiest way possible. After going through his daily ritual and adorning himself in his classic look, Ronan wasted no time in bringing the hammer down on a captured Nova Corp member. It is brutal - and let us know that mercy is not a word that exists in Ronan’s vocabulary.

#4: Loki

“The Avengers” (2012)

Don't get us wrong, Loki's debut in the first “Thor” movie was solid. But while that was where it all began, his reintroduction in “Avengers” is what we really want to talk about. From a spoiled prince to the leader of an alien invasion, Loki had a noticeable level up in this crossover movie. With a Chitauri army at his disposal, he waged war on New York and proved to be so dangerous that the Avengers would need to finally come together to take him down. Throughout all this, Loki was a truly vicious and vindictive villain. Don’t forget that there’s a moment where he gouges somebody’s eye without a single care in the world. God of mischief? Yeah, more like god of mass destruction!

#3: The Void

“Thunderbolts*” (2025)

Poor Bob. The guy just wanted to find some peace and become a better person, but in the end was consumed by his trauma. Unfortunately for the rest of the world, his trauma happens to be a super-powered physical manifestation known as the Void. Pitch black with lifeless eyes, the Void is the embodiment of crushing despair. As soon as it's released, it wastes no time in dragging everything in view into its darkness, locking them away in prisons formed from their own shame. It’s a horrifying prospect with its roots buried in reality, which is what makes this amalgamation of negativity so damn imposing!

#2: Ultron

“Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015)

An insidious artificial intelligence who decides humanity is worth exterminating after only a few seconds browsing the internet. That’s Ultron at his core – overwhelming intelligence without a trace of empathy. As for his intro, it easily steps into the waters of horror. Can you imagine a more haunting sight than a shell of a broken piece of Iron Man armour crawling into view, waxing poetic about its murderous intentions, before peace-ing out by singing Pinocchio? Combine that with James Spader’s mesmerising performance, and you have a villain to remember.

#1: Thanos

“Avengers: Infinity War” (2018)

For years, the Mad Titan had been hinted at as the ultimate big bad. The endgame, if you will. He had brief appearances here and there, but nothing could have prepared us for when the boss man showed up to put his plan for universal genocide into motion. In a single stroke, he wipes out the Asgardian refugees, kills both Heimdall and Loki, reclaims the Space Stone and breaks Thor physically and mentally. Oh, he also bodied the Incredible Hulk like he was a ragdoll. There are flexes, and then there’s this!
