Top 10 Creepiest Hidden Areas In Video Games

These are the places that become as familiar your real life home. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we are counting down our picks for the top 10 video game hub areas.  For those who are not familiar with the term; A Video Game Hub is a central area or level you can freely move around it that is used to access other levels and or worlds in a game. To ensure that there are plenty of places to explore we are limiting our choices to one entry per franchise.

#10: Hyperion “StarCraft II” (2010)

Starting us off is a battle-cruiser that showed us that we could have a vessel that defeats hordes of enemies as well as look good in the process. The ship provides you with both firepower and those basic amenities you need. Besides having your standard ship based needs like a sick bay, a cargo bay and a mess hall, the real party is at the cantina where you can do a little business, watch some tv or stop by on Saturday nights to catch Tosh and the Screamers live. Man, Battle cruisers have all this stuff inside? I feel so bad about sending groups of twenty to their deaths now…

#9: Carrington Institute “Perfect Dark” (2000)

Do you want a career in spying and corporate espionage? Then the Carrington Institute might be the place for you. This institute is responsible for training their own special agents including the great Joanna Dark. Carrington provides all the needs to be a perfect agent from tutorials and training sessions to the firing range where you can improve your technique. You’re going to need know this area really well, especially since you might have to defend it later on.

#8: Time Twisting Machine “Crash Bandicoot: Warped” (1998)

Also in:

Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time Review

After defeating Dr. Cortex in the previous game Crash and Coco Bandicoot return to take down the team of Cortex, Dr. N. Tropy and Aku Aku’s evil twin, Uka Uka. While the warp rooms in Crash 2 sent us to crazy destinations, it was even more crazy being sent through different time periods using N. Tropy’s Time Machine. It houses 30 different levels to 10 different historical periods. Whether we were riding the length of the Great Wall or fighting wizards in medieval times, it was all thanks to this machine.

#7: Timber’s Island “Diddy Kong Racing” (1997)

It’s almost unheard of for a racing game to need a hub world, but that’s what gets Diddy Kong on this list with the help of his Genie Elephant friend Taj. To face off against the evil Wizpig, you must explore the island using different kinds of vehicles like your standard cart or an airplane. You can explore by driving or flying, either to collect balloons or just picking the next track. You can even race Taj around the island in some challenges, so it’s best to get to know this place pretty well.

#6: Sanctuary “Borderlands 2” (2012)

The city that eventually got aerial upgrade serves as the sanctuary for the Vault Hunters. When you are on a planet as dangerous as Pandora and you have to face off against alien wildlife and the creations of the Hyperion Corporation, you need a place where you can be safe while you prepare to hunt for treasure. This city provides all that and more, including many gun shops, bars, and a clinic. And remember to obtain a golden key for that special loot chest.

#5: The Tower “Destiny” (2014)

Top 10 Best Video Game Guerrilla Marketing Campaigns

Defending the remnants of humanity can be exhausting. So, when you’re not in mortal danger you can always party in the Tower with your fellow Guardians. Located in the dead center of the last human city called … The City, the Tower has all the amenities needed for being a deadly killing machine. Whether you’re buying weapons and armor, a new ship or bragging to your friends about your achievements it’s all done here. Or you can start your own fun in the tower by playing Duck Duck Goose online with your friends.

#4: Gruntilda’s Lair “Banjo-Kazooie” (1998)

Gruntilda is a witch that wants to be beautiful, and to achieve this she kidnaps Banjo’s sister Tooty. This forces Banjo and Kazooie to chase after the witch into her dangerous lair. This one stands out because; not only was this place the central area for the worlds you had to explore, but also because it was its own challenging world itself, housing nasty creatures, a few hidden surprises, and puzzle pieces to find. Making matters worse is the fact that Gruntilda constantly mocks you while you’re in her lair.

#3: XCOM Headquarters “XCOM: Enemy Unknown” (2012)

If you’re going to be defending the Earth against aliens you’re going to need a base of operations with technologically advanced systems. Good thing you are the commander of the Extraterrestrial Combat Unit. Being in control of the Headquarters, not only do you send your troops in to deal with the alien crisis but you must also make sure that they are prepared for the fight. What appears at first to be boring micromanaging soon turns into one of the most important and difficult aspects of the game.

#2: Normandy Sr-2 “Mass Effect 2 and 3” (2010-12)

After it the first model was destroyed by the collectors, Cerberus stepped in and rebuilt the Normandy, only better. It’s faster than any ship and carries firepower to bring down the strongest of vessels. We did enjoy flying around on the Ebon Hawk in Star Wars: The Old Republic, it didn’t quite have everything we were looking for, such as it’s own AI and a Fish Tank. When you’re not exploring the universe it’s also nice to have a place to jam to music, get a drink or get some sweet alien booty. Before we warp to our number one pick, here are a few honorable mentions. Pod “LittleBigPlanet” (2007) DK Island “Donkey Kong 64 (1999)
Roivas Mansion
“Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem” (2002) Hub “Lego Star Wars” (2005-11)

#1: Princess Peach’s Castle “Super Mario 64” (1996)
