VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton WRITTEN BY: Derick McDuff
It's about time they got together. For this list, we're looking at small screen characters that became a couple in the last season of their show. So those that flirted, kissed, or briefly hooked up in early seasons still qualify. Note, this list will include major spoilers! Our list includes “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” “Teen Wolf,” “Kim Possible,” “Pretty Little Liars,” “Angel,” and more! Join MsMojo as we count down our picks for the Top 10 TV Characters That Didn't Become a Couple Until the Final Season.

#10: Betty Suarez & Daniel Meade “Ugly Betty” (2006-10)

Top 10 Memorable Ugly Betty Moments

While we technically don’t get to see them become a couple on screen, the last scene of the final episode of “Ugly Betty” ends with Betty’s old boss and crush Daniel finally asking her out for dinner. It’s not exactly the guarantee of “happily ever after”, but the implication is definitely there, and the suggestion that they end up together let fans who had been watching them flirt for four seasons breathe a sigh of relief. The decision to hold back the full reveal of their relationship may have disappointed some, but it allowed the story to focus on Betty taking control of her own destiny after leaving her former company and moving to London to follow her career dreams.

#9: Aang & Katara “Avatar: The Last Airbender” (2005-08)

Top 10 Katara & Aang Moments on Avatar: The Last Airbender

From the beginning, shortly after Katara found Aang frozen in an iceberg, it became clear that there was more than friendship developing between these two. Despite the pair constantly shooting each other sideways glances and blushing, Aang’s shyness and insecurity, Katara’s stubbornness, and their mission to defeat the fire nation prevented the pair from acknowledging those feelings during the first two seasons. There were still plenty of romantically charged moments between them - most notably in “The Cave of Two Lovers” when they shared a kiss. After many ups and downs, the pair finally ended up together after Aang defeated the Fire Lord, and the pair lived happily ever after.

#8: Stiles Stilinski & Lydia Martin “Teen Wolf” (2011-17)

Top 10 Stiles & Lydia Moments on Teen Wolf

In a trend you might see crop up a few more times on this list, this romance started as an unrequited crush harbored for many years - in this particular case, by Stiles. These two didn’t exactly run in the same social circles, but things changed when both were thrust into the world of the supernatural, with the revelation of Lydia being a banshee and Stiles’ best friend becoming a werewolf. Their romance was a slow burn, but we can trace it back to their dance date back in season one. Flash forward to season six, which saw them profess their love for one another before finally getting together for real in the midseason finale.

#7: Kim Possible & Ron Stoppable “Kim Possible” (2002-07)

Top 10 Craziest Moments from 90 Day Fiancé Happily Ever After Season 4

Even if Kim and Ron couldn’t always see it themselves, everyone around them, as well as the viewers at home, knew that these best friends were meant to be more than that. This finally came to a head in the special “So the Drama” -meant to serve as a series finale- when Kim and Ron finally admitted their feelings for each other, heading off to their Junior Prom together, where they even shared a romantic dance and kiss. While this was meant to be the end of their story, Disney renewed the show for another season, and when we caught up with them in senior year, they had thankfully made their relationship official.

#6: Dana Scully & Fox Mulder “The X-Files” (1993-2002; 2016-)

While the show’s creator Chris Carter was adamant that they would never become a couple, the natural chemistry and casual flirtation made it impossible for Mulder and Scully to not wind up together. Over the years, their feelings for one another became more transparent and small moments hinting at romance gave way to more obvious sexual attraction. Right as it seemed they would start a relationship, Mulder was abducted by aliens and, shortly after returning, went on the run. Mulder’s return in the show’s finale saw the moment everyone had been waiting for as they ended the show as a couple - at least until the revival, that is.

#5: Winifred Burkle & Wesley Wyndam-Pryce “Angel” (1999-2005)

The former Watcher Wesley and the brilliant scientist who had escaped the demon dimension, Winifred (better known as Fred), had a very long road to walk down before ending up together. Failing to get together early on, they would each date other people before ever becoming a couple. When they did finally get together they waited till the last minute, even by the standards of this list. Shortly after their relationship began, Fred died in Wesley’s arms as her body was taken over by a blue haired demon, (it’s a long story) tragically cutting their relationship short.

#4: Fez & Jackie Burkhart “That ‘70s Show” (1998-2006)

Also in:

Top 10 Kelso & Jackie Moments on That '70s Show

While a lot of the couples on this list seemed inevitable, this one was anything but. For much of the series, Jackie was involved with two serious boyfriends; Hyde and Kelso; and which one of them she would ultimately choose was anyone’s guess. Except Jackie didn’t wind up with either of her old flames; even turning down Kelso’s proposal, instead getting together with the lovesick Fez in the end. While he had unsuccessfully pined after the often shallow girl for years, Fez had matured by the final season, as had Jackie. And so together, they earned their unexpected happy ending.

#3: Laura Lee Winslow & Steve Urkel “Family Matters” (1989-98)

In an example not too different from Fez and Jackie, the nerdy Urkel spent years pining after his friend Laura, with Laura rebuffing his affections throughout most of the show. By the last season, that was beginning to change, and Urkel had grown, both as a character and in terms of his place within the series. Laura finally realized her feelings for Urkel after he received a makeover, but was caught in a love triangle between him and his cooler alter ego’s clone; yeah, the sitcom got kinda strange in later seasons. Both Urkel and his clone proposed to Laura, but she ultimately chose to be with the nerdy original.

#2: Alison DiLaurentis & Emily Fields “Pretty Little Liars” (2010-17)

One of the primary draws of the murder mystery teen drama “Pretty Little Liars” was getting to see if fan favorite ships would officially end up together. One of the show’s main ships was between Alison and Emily, who had clear feelings for one another, shared romantic moments and had even hooked up with each other. While Emily wanted a relationship, Alison would not acknowledge her own sexuality and refused her. It was not until the last few episodes, after years of being manipulated by the mysterious “A”, that fans got to see “Emison” become an official couple, with Alison accepting herself and her feelings for Emily. Before we reveal our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions: Aidan Waite & Sally Malik “Being Human” (2011-14) Princess Bubblegum & Marceline the Vampire Queen “Adventure Time” (2010-18) Zoey Brooks & Chase Matthews “Zoey 101” (2005-08) Tim and Dawn “The Office” (2001-03) Ed and Winry “Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood” (2009-10)

#1: Ted Mosby & Tracy McConnell [aka The Mother] “How I Met Your Mother” (2005-14)

Also in:

Top 10 Dancing with the Stars Couples of All Time

Seeing as the show’s entire premise was a buildup for this relationship -with the continual promise of it coming to fruition in the final season- we really couldn’t put it anywhere else but at the top of our list. For years, viewers were teased with references to the titular mother, but after eight seasons of buildup, Tracy was finally unveiled during the penultimate season finale, when both Ted and the viewers got their first real glimpse at the mother. The final season saw them begin a budding romance, as well as jumping ahead to different moments in their eventual marriage, finally fulfilling the series’ initial promise of showing Ted and the mother’s love story.
