#10: “Borderlands” (2024)

It’s not often a video game movie is of particularly high quality, and “Borderlands” was not an exception to this trend. Despite having an all-star cast, it was a total flop. None of the cast have explicitly come out and said they disliked it, as it’s likely they’re not allowed to. For instance, the boss of Gearbox Tweeted in 2025, “Where did I state it was going to be amazing?” Then said, “It’s a miracle it even exists”, showing he’s simply proud to have a movie of his game, without caring about its quality. Also, it turned out that Cate Blanchett admitted to only signing up because she was offered the role during lockdown, when her mental health was particularly poor.

#9: “Star Trek: Section 31” (2025)

To say this is the worst “Star Trek” film sounds like a bold claim, as there are so many. Well, it’s an opinion shared by most fans, and it’s not hard to see why. This straight-to-TV movie featured hit actress Michelle Yeoh from “Everything Everywhere All At Once”. It’s rare to see an actor slander their own movie, but Yeoh did exactly that after its release. She said, “There were some things that we could have done better”. This is a polite way of saying they messed up, but as actors aren’t usually allowed to criticise their own movie, she can’t say that explicitly.

#8: “Passengers” (2016)

This movie had some fairly mixed reviews at release, particularly regarding its story and characterisation. It turned out lead actor, Jennifer Lawrence, was warned by Adele not to feature in the movie. In an interview with The New York Times, they asked if she disliked any of her films. Lawrence didn’t hesitate to say it was “Passengers”, and that she should’ve listened to Adele’s advice. Co-star Chris Pratt, on the other hand, says he doesn’t care about the hate; he thinks it’s “very good” and is “very proud” of it. Pratt also added that he was glad it made money back for the studio, so maybe that’s how he measures the quality of his movies.

#7: “X-Men: Apocalypse” (2016)

The “X-Men” movies can wildly vary in quality, with “Days of Future Past” garnering critical acclaim and “Origins: Wolverine” getting critically slammed. One of the weaker entries is easily “Apocalypse”. The titular villain was played by Oscar Isaac, who called the prosthetics process for the titular character “excruciating”. While he refused to disown the film, he’s not a fan of it. His main motivation for accepting the role was to work with the other actors involved in the project. Turned out, he couldn’t even see them from all the makeup he had on. Isaac also said he wished “it would have been a better film”.

#6: “Fantastic Four” (2015)

The 2015 adaptation of the “Fantastic Four” is generally considered the worst version of these characters. Josh Trank both wrote and directed this shambles of a movie. Four years after its release, he dropped a lengthy review of it on Letterboxd, rating it 2 out of 5 stars. In Trank’s own words, “the movie is alright”, and he “was expecting it to be much worse than it was”. This is pretty surprising, as it’s hard to imagine this film being worse. It was his second-ever film, made during a particularly difficult period for Trank. So, this explains why it ended up so bad.

#5: “Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey” (2023)

If this movie slipped under your radar, consider yourself lucky. This abysmal horror movie currently has a 3% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. As the name suggests, it’s basically a Winnie-the-Pooh slasher flick. A short while after release, director Rhys Frake-Waterfield addressed the negative reception. He said the issue was that it was a low-budget production, and that they’re being directly compared to Marvel movies. So, the director believed it was bad because they only had $100,000. This is a fairly lazy excuse, and makes you question if he’s ever heard the saying “limitation breeds creativity”.

#4: “Morbius” (2022)

This must be the only film in history to flop twice. This disastrous vampire movie featured Jared Leto as Michael Morbius. When it came out, barely anyone watched it, and those who did weren’t fond of it. This turned it into a huge meme, with the internet convincing the studio to re-release it, with even fewer people going to see it. The director, Daniel Espinosa, felt pretty upset about it, saying he had “a lot of self-hatred” for his own work. Leto has the opposite feelings, as he hopes there’ll be a sequel and wants to be given complete creative control over it.

#3: “Dolittle” (2020)

The 1998 “Doctor Dolittle” movie with Eddie Murphy is fondly remembered; the 2020 remake has been almost entirely forgotten about. This film ended up in production hell for ages. It underwent extensive reshoots after some test screenings, showing they didn’t fare too well. They began shooting scenes before knowing where the CGI animals would be placed. Also, one production member made some savage remarks about director Stephen Gaghan. Supposedly, he was a nightmare to work with, making everyone’s job harder because of his lack of organisation. The same crewmember even said, “If it’s even remotely watchable,” then the people who finished the movie “deserve some…medals”.

#2: “Music” (2021)

Hollywood has a tendency to struggle to depict neurodivergence accurately and sensitively. One of the most egregious examples is “Music,” directed by singer Sia. Its terrible reviews were a huge red flag, but an even bigger one was Sia herself apologising for the film. Its plot centres on an alcoholic becoming the guardian of her nonverbal autistic half-sister. One scene proved so controversial, Sia needed to add a warning, explaining they don’t condone what happens. Eventually, there was even a Change.org petition demanding that they revoke its Golden Globe nomination. This wasn’t successful, but neither was the film.

#1: “Madame Web” (2024)

This Marvel movie was debatably the biggest box office failure of 2024. Critics hated it, and it only earned $100 million globally on a budget of $80 million. For those unaware, cinemas take a huge cut of profits, so they weren’t close to breaking even. It was such a poor film, star Sydney Sweeney criticised it during her “Saturday Night Live” appearance. Lead actor Dakota Johnson also chimed in, saying that it was “made by people who don’t have a creative bone in their body”. Conversely, Emma Roberts blamed its failure on internet culture, so not the whole cast was critical of it.
