Not all battlefields are above ground. Join http://www.WatchMojo.com as we count down our picks for the Top 10 Subterranean Movie Fights or Top 10 Fights That Take Place Underground. For this list, we're looking at the most memorable big screen fights that take place beneath the Earth's surface. They can be deep down, or a just a few feet underground, as long as fists are flying and there's dirt above them.

Special thanks to our users MikeyP and Jacob Koopmann for submitting the idea on our Suggestion Tool at http://www.WatchMojo.comsuggest

#10: Sand and Tunnels
“Spider-Man 3” (2007)

If a Spider goes under ground, you can be sure it’s to kick ass. In the third installment of Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” trilogy, in a scene that would later be echoed by Andrew Garfield’s incarnation of the web crawler as he fights another supervillain, Peter Parker finds himself in the symbiote-affected suit and thirsting for revenge on the person he believes killed his uncle. He pursues Sandman into the sewers where they both use gravity and subway trains as their weapons. It’s dynamic, tense, and kicks off our list in style.

#9: Shredder vs. Splinter
“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” (2014)

It’s no secret that the Michael Bay-a-cized version of everyone’s favorite fighting reptiles got mixed reviews, but audiences did get their money’s worth when Shredder shows up for a battle with Splinter in the Turtles’ sewer lair. Although the ‘90s’ “TMNT” film also saw the turtles venture beneath the city for a fight, this 2014 romp made full use of the huge advancements in CGI that’ve been made since. Needless to say, the fight between the giant mechanism and the Ninja-Rat is nothing short of epic.

#8: My Turn
“V for Vendetta” (2006)

Note to self: guy with mysterious backstory, lots of knives and awesome mask… not someone you wanna mess with. V’s fight for freedom against a totalitarian government comes to a pivotal moment as he faces the government goons, outgunned and outmatched in an abandoned subway station. After taking a barrage of bullets to the chest, he battles the guards in a viciously beautiful slow-motion sequence before they can even reload. The cherry on top though is V’s final words to his enemy, expressing the power of free speech in a totalitarian society.

#7: Incredibly Stupid
“Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” (2003)

You never know when Jack Sparrow is gonna turn around and do something epic, but you should probably always expect it. In the cave housing the cursed Aztec treasure, Sparrow picks a fight with the wicked Captain Barbossa, while Will Turner and Elizabeth take on pirate zombies. It’s got everything a great underground pirate fight needs: adventure, excitement, and occasional moments of hilarity. Plus, skeletal Johnny Depp… priceless.

#6: Temple Run
“Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” (1984)

Speaking of adventure, nothing says excitement like escaping a den of folks who are into human sacrifice. In his second big screen outing, Dr. Jones finds himself and his friends captured beneath a mountain, and they have to escape from child-enslaving brainwashing witch doctors. If only there weren’t dozens of bad guys between him and the exit. Bad for him, good for us, as we get to watch the action unfold as only Harrison Ford can deliver.

#5: Finishing Move
“Enter the Dragon” (1973)

After being invited onto an island for a sketchy fight tournament, Bruce Lee tries to uncover the villain’s nefarious plans by sneaking into his underground base. What does he encounter? Henchmen. So many henchmen. No amount of baddies is too much for this master though, as he shows off by dispatching many a foe with his own signature style.

#4: Something Beautiful
“Fight Club” (1999)

Top 20 Hilariously Awful Movie Fights

Here’s one from a movie completely filled with underground fighting – literally and figuratively. But we ended up choosing the most brutal fight we could find. The narrator takes on Angel Face in the club, and overcome by jealousy, decides to take out his rage on the poor guy. Exceptional in its brutality, this fight has us cringing long after the narrator reveals his true motivation. The whole movie is dark, but this is on another level.

#3: Watch Your Back
“Hanna” (2011)

Ever get the feeling someone’s following you? Well, if you’re a trained CIA assassin, that feeling might be justified. Eric Bana plays a man on the run from the CIA, and when he’s cornered in a subway station, he releases an explosion of violence and mayhem. The beauty of this scene is in the juxtaposition of the brutality and violence with the fluid elegance of the spinning camera in a long take.

#2: Darkness Is Not Your Ally
“The Dark Knight Rises” (2012)

Not too many foes can give Batman a run for his money, but when Bane and the Bat go head to head in this underground lair, it’s a sight to behold, as Wayne is not only defeated, but broken. The fight is drawn out, if for no other reason than to showcase the mounting feeling of doom. Although the battle is a dark moment for Gotham’s knight, it is one from which he will undoubtedly come back.

Before our top pick does battle, here are a few honorable mentions.
- Mark I
“Iron Man” (2008)
- You Shall Not Pass
“The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” (2001)
- Viktor’s Demise
“Underworld” (2003)
- Get Your Ass to Mars
“Total Recall” (1990)
- I’ll Kill You With My Tea Cup
“The Chronicles of Riddick” (2004)

#1: Neo vs. Smith Subway Showdown
“The Matrix” (1999)

Topping our list is the showdown between the prodigal hacker slash warrior and an unbeatable program in the sci-fi classic that took audiences by storm at the end of the 20th century. Taking place in a derelict subway station, this duel sees Neo being given the option to run, but he instead turns to face his foe in one of the film’s most memorable moments. Thanks to groundbreaking special effects mixed with the lightning-fast martial arts and stylized gunplay, this underground fight flies over the other contenders – literally and figuratively.
