#10: “Devil May Cry HD Collection” (2018)
Let’s address the elephant in the room; “DmC” was not exactly what we were wanting from the franchise. Many fans felt the same way considering how loathed Dante’s redesign was. That being said, it’ll be a refreshing visit when “Devil May Cry HD Collection” releases on PS4, Xbox One, and PC in March. Like the original release of the collection for PS3 and 360 back in 2012, it includes the first three DMC games, but this time, each one will run at 60 frames per second. The best part? The collection will only cost thirty dollars! Only ten bucks a game? Sweet deal!
#9: “Catherine: Full Body” (2018)
When the original version released in 2011, “Catherine” saw outstanding reviews and even won some awards. Among all the oversaturated trends of first-person shooters and survival games with crafting, “Catherine” stood out for how different it was in its story and gameplay. For those who missed it the first time, “Catherine” is coming back this year with a remaster, dubbed “Full Body.” Developer Atlus plans to incorporate an online mode, and the story will get some more beef with extra endings, new characters, and more chapters. The game may seem a little bizarre, but don’t let that put you off. “Catherine” is more than worth your time.
#8: “Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition” (2018)
So many Wii U gems went unnoticed. Hey, that’s what happened if you released ONLY on the Wii U. “Hyrule Warriors” was one of those games until it was ported to the Nintendo 3DS, but that release didn’t come without some downgrades. This time around, “Hyrule Warriors” is coming to Switch, and it's coming with the entire buffet! Every character, every level, every piece of DLC will be in one single package when “Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition” releases on Nintendo Switch. With a release window scheduled for quarter two of 2018, we don’t have to wait long before we’re hacking and slashing Bokoblins and Stalchilds again!
#7: “Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection” (2018)
If you just can’t get enough of “Street Fighter”, you’ll be happy to know that we got another one coming! However, “Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection” is more than just a port of twelve classic iterations in the franchise and an update that includes online multiplayer. This collection boasts a lovely museum filled with concept art, sprite animations, a music library, and some bits of “Street Fighter” history. So, if you’re looking to celebrate a port for pieces of gaming history or just looking for good, old-fashioned arcade fighting, this might suit your needs.
#6: “MediEvil” (2018)
We’ve seen a surge of revivals for PlayStation 1 mascots. In 2017, we saw the return of PaRappa the Rapper and Crash Bandicoot. Now, in 2018, we see the resurrection of “MediEvil”, and it’s about damn time! “MediEvil” hasn’t had a new installment since the sequel released in 2000. Sure, the first game was already remastered for the PSP in 2005, but it’s time for Sir Daniel Fortesque to make his triumphant return to consoles. Given how visually impressive Crash looked on PS4, we’re ecstatic to see how “MediEvil” will turn out. No exact release date has been given, but you can guarantee we’ll be singing “Hallelujah” when we pick up our copies.
#5: “Dark Souls: Remastered” (2018)
Just when we thought the “Dark Souls” series was coming to an end, it's giving us a reason to start all over again. With a remaster of the original coming to Xbox One, PS4, and PC, this means we’ll finally have all of our “Dark Souls” games on one console. Additionally, the game will run at sixty frames per second, host dedicated servers, and support 4K resolutions. The biggest piece of news from this announcement, however, is the fact that this will be the franchise’s debut on Nintendo Switch! That’s right! “Dark Souls”! On a Nintendo console!
#4: “Age of Empires: Definitive Edition” (2018)
Poor old “Age of Empires”. All we’ve seen in recent years is spin-off titles, taking the franchise to tower-defense and mobile gaming. Luckily, Microsoft plans to bring the series back to its roots, starting with “Age of Empires: Definitive Edition”. The game supports 4K visuals, remastered music, and improvements to the gameplay that the original had. Oh, and this won’t be the only “Age of Empires” game being remade. Microsoft has announced remakes for “Age of Empires II” and “III”, all leading up to a brand-new game, “Age of Empires IV”. The future’s looking bright for one of our favorite real-time strategy series!
#3: “Resident Evil 2 Remake” (TBA)
“Resident Evil 2” is arguably one of the best games in the entire franchise. However, this won’t be any ordinary remake. While the project will follow the same events in the original, the gameplay will be changed to play more like “Resident Evil 4”. Sounds like an odd change, but given how impressive “RE2” and “RE4” are, this might be a perfect blend of the two. Will it be ready for us in time for Halloween 2018? Well, unfortunately, news of the game has been very, VERY quiet. So, only time will tell.
#2: “System Shock” (2018)
The history of “System Shock” has certainly been a tragic one. Where has this franchise been? The answer is a bit of a weird one: it’s been in the hands of an insurance company after the original developer, Looking Glass Technologies, was forced to shut down. Thankfully, Night Dive Studios managed to buy the rights and are currently working on a remake. Unlike the original title, “System Shock” will be released not just on PC, but on PS4, Xbox One, and Mac. Of all the PC treasures from the 90’s, we’re happy to be seeing “System Shock” ready to take the world by storm once again - especially since the original’s gameplay hasn’t exactly aged well.
#1: “Final Fantasy VII Remake” (TBA)
Nearly two decades later, and our adventure with Cloud Strife and company is still in our thoughts. Imagine how far our jaws dropped when this was announced at E3 2015. A PS1 classic coming to PS4? Our cash was lunging at our screens! Details have been scarce as to when we’ll be able to get our hands on the game, but some familiar faces are joining the development team, including Tetsuya Nomura, Yoshinori Kitase, and Kazushige Nojima, all of whom worked on the original. We have a feeling it's going to be just as phenomenal as it was in way back in 1997.
