Top 10 Overpowered Anime Mecha

Top 10 Overpowered Anime Mecha
VOICE OVER: Ashley Bowman WRITTEN BY: Alex Crilly-Mckean
They don't come bigger and badder than this bunch. Welcome to WatchMojo and today we are counting down our picks for the Top 10 Overpowered Anime Mecha.

For this list, we'll be looking at the giant robots in anime that tower above the rest. Keep in mind we won't be including robo-girls like Nono from Diebuster, or sentient mechs that can't be piloted like Gridman. No cockpit, no entry.

For this list, we’ll be looking at the giant robots in anime that tower above the rest. Keep in mind we won’t be including robo-girls like Nono from Diebuster, or sentient mechs that can’t be piloted like Gridman. No cockpit, no entry.

#10: Valvrave I Hito

“Valvrave the Liberator” (2013)

You know you’re part of an elite club when in order to even turn on the damn robot, you need to be a vampire. After being transformed into a Magius, the pilot in question will find themselves given access to the Valvrave in full, with Hito in-particular gaining quite a set of unique toys. Halberds, swords, hammers, boomerangs, firearms, scythes, gauntlets, lasers, all of which can be powered up thanks to its RAVE Engine. We may take issue with how a certain Magius…conducted himself around his female classmate thanks to the Magius conversion, but at the very least he got quite the death machine out of the deal.

#9: Strelizia True Apus

“Darling in the Franxx” (2018)

Guess true love can overcome anything. Even random invasions by last-second villains. After getting control of a gargantuan-sized Strelizia, Hiro and Zero Two’s uncompromising affection somehow ends up transforming it into a…well…giant version of Zero Two. Despite now having a face and other assets, Apus is still very much a mecha, evident from how she’s not only able to decimate encroaching forces with an assortment of energy blasts, but you’ve also got Hiro buried inside pulling her triggers like a regular pilot. Wait that came out wrong!

#8: Evangelion Unit-01

“Neon Genesis Evangelion” franchise (1995-)

While we could have included Unit 13, given its potentially world-saving power and the two man cooperation of husbandos Shinji and Kaworu, we have to hand it to the poster mech of the whole Evangelion universe. Not only is 01 very, very good when it comes to chomping up Angels and splattering their heavenly guts all over the ruins of Tokyo, but it was a catalyst that caused the apocalyse. With Shinji’s adolescence combined with the EVA’s world-ending appetite, it’s no wonder that they ended up uprooting civilization as they knew it. You told him to get in the robot, this is the result!

#7: Shin Getter Robo

“Getter Robo: Armageddon” (1998-99)

Updated in every way imaginable, this third iteration of the classic mecha has some series firepower to its name, honouring the legacy of the other robos that have come before it by blowing the shit out every enemy that crossed its path. By absorbing Getter Rays like a sponge, this mecha is able to decimate entire fleets by only exerting itself at half its potential, the constant stream of energy enabling it to cast a whole variety of blasts, beams and bursts, each able to crush any enemy looking to try their luck.

#6: GaoGaiGar

“The King of Braves GaoGaiGar” (1997-98)

If we were going by theme song alone, thus guy would easily smash the competition. That being said, its capacity for destruction isn’t anything to snort at. By fusing with various GaoMachines, the King of Braves is able to increase its size and strength, to the point where its “Broken” and “Protect” sides are more than enough to shatter any Zonders that tries to threaten the planet. Honestly the only thing more powerful than a punch from this mecha is Guy’s fabulous hair.

#5: Turn A Gundam

“Turn A Gundam” (1999-2000)

While the Devil Gundam is a true monster of a mecha it still can’t compare to the White Doll. Sure, the Turn A Gundam doesn’t have best design, best pilot or even the best backstory, in terms of sheer destructive potential, there’s no topping it. Outside of its usual capacity to smash other Mobile Suits, the Turn A has incredible regeneration, not to mention can stop all technology in tracks. Which, when you’re in a Gundam series, is a pretty handy talent! Of course, when all else fails, it can always live up to its moniker and unleash the Moonlight Butterfly.

#4: Gunbuster

“Gunbuster” (1988-89)

When it comes to blowing aliens right out of the sky, nothing does it better than this. A combination of Buster Machines 1 and 2, the Gunbuster serves as humanity’s ultimate trump card. While it can’t save Noriko and Kazumi from the time altering affect of space, it can decimate a fleet of Space Monsters like they’re nothing. With two degeneracy generators in tow, along with an arsenal of missiles and lasers, it’s no wonder the Gunbuster managed to save the planet and lightning kick any extra-terrestrial threat to the curb.

#3: Ideon

“Space Runaway Ideon” series (1980-82)

It may not look like anything too special, but the power on this thing is staggering! The sole protector of the Solo Ship, the Ideon is a force of nature and the Buff Clan’s worst nightmare. Forget about the standard fare like missile ports and barriers energy barriers (even though it does have those in abundance) the Ideon is packing the heavy shit! A Mini Black Hole Cannon, which kind of speaks for itself. The Ideon Sword, which might just be powerful enough to slice up an entire world. The Wave Leader Cannon, which could casually melt an entire solar system. Of course, in case it ever wanted to kill everything in the universe, it has its infamous self-destruct mechanism. Boom.

#2: Demonbane

“Demonbane” (2006)

Because why settle for a random robot when you can have a mecha that’s essentially the lovechild of a death machine and a Lovecraftian God? That’s Demonbane, and he doesn’t take prisoners. The key word here is infinite, because this guy doesn’t do anything by half measures. While overexerting itself does reduce it to a husk, that doesn’t really matter when it can manipulate time and space to its will, burning apart anything it fancies with an infinite amount of homing blasts. So yeah, this thing makes quantum and causality its bitch.

#1: Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

“Gurren Lagann The Movie: The Lights in the Sky are Stars” (2009)

Guess bigger really does mean better. While Team Dai-Gurren’s combined strength managed to forge the strongest mecha in existence, one that quite literally towered over entire galaxies, and proved more than a match for a universe-ending force like the Anti-Spiral, it turns out you can always one last transformation that can push a mecha to the realm of omnipotence. It’s size is so astronomical it take up 57 percent of the observable universe, it’s power cannot be comprehended, and it’s Giga Drill Break probably packs more of a punch than the Big Bang. And just to top things off, it resembles Kamina. Because of course it does.
