Aside from its visually distinctive appearance, this slender mech has a devastating ace in the hole known as the Moonlight Butterfly. It may look radiant, at least until you’re on the receiving end and end up vaporized.

“Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans” (2015-) This machine is pure savagery, and might just be one of the most beautiful things we’ve ever laid our eyes on. As one of the legendary Gundams that brought an end to the infamous Calamity War, Barbatos only exists to crush his enemies. And we mean literally crush since it prefers to use weapons such as a giant mace and katana to get the job done. Put it in the hands of the unyielding and quietly ferocious Miyazuki, and it’s no wonder that this Mobile Suit has put the Gjallerhorn through hell.

“Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack” (1988) While we’ll always associate Amuro Ray with the original Gundam, for his final battle with eternal rival Char, he decided to get a serious upgrade and the result is freaking awesome. Along with a slick new paint job, the Nu Gundam has a serious amount of firepower under its belt. You’ve got classic beam sabres, plenty of armaments, and a set of “funnels” capable of blasting foes out of the stratosphere as well as creating a near indestructible beam shield. No wonder it managed to wipe the floor with Char!

“Mobile Suit G Gundam” (1994-95) It takes a lot of balls to say your Gundam is basically a deity, but to give it credit Domon Kasshu’s Mobile Suit certainly knows how to deliver some divine punishment on its foes. Fuelled by his love, his anger, and all of his sorrow, this heavenly machine managed to take Domon all the way to the Gundam Fight finals, defeated his badass mentor Master Asia, and even put an end to the fearsome Devil Gundam. There’s just no beating the, say it all together folks -(insert Erupting Burning Finger scene)

“Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn” (2010-14) In many ways, this mecha is something of a spiritual successor to the original Gundam. Piloted by a youth disillusioned with conflict, it was created to fight against the forces of Zeon, and clashes with a guy who is literally the second coming of Char! Even with those merits, this Mobile Suit knows how to stand out of a crowd, mainly through its awesome transformation sequence! Don’t let the unicorn look throw you off, when it switches to Destroy Mode you can expect to see Zeon soldiers fry.

“Mobile Suit Gundam Wing” (1995-96) While Gundam Wing was definitely one of the more shounen-esque entries in the franchise, no one is claiming that Heero Yuy’s beloved Mobile Suit isn’t awesome. Aside from its more angelic appearance courtesy of a sweet pair of wings, Zero’s Twin Buster Rifle steals the show every time it’s on screen, especially since its capable of taking out a whole space station in a single shot. Throw in its final clash with the likes of Zechs’ Gundam Epyon, and Zero is still a personal favourite to many a fan. At least it has more personality than Heero.

“Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam” (1985-86) It certainly took Kamille a while before he let this dream machine loose, but the wait was most certainly worth it. Following in the footsteps of the original Gundam, the Zeta Gundam was a revolutionary machine for the time, standing apart from all other Mobile Suits that came before it in terms if appearance and just general ability. Anyone who underestimated it (we’re looking at you Scirocco) was met with a rather swift death. You did not want to be working for the Titans when this Gundam came a calling.

“Mobile Suit Gundam 00” (2007-09) Having overwhelming firepower is all well and good, but sometimes nothing beats close quarters combat, and that’s what Exia excels at! As a Gundam unit that specialises in close quarters combat, war orphan turned pilot Setsuna managed to break through many of the Union’s tin soldiers with this beauty. Sure, he would trade it in several times over the course of the series, even getting himself the GNT-0000 00 Qan[T] at one point(pronounced Double-Oh Quanta) (xref) when aliens invaded the Gundam series. But in our minds, there’s just no replacing the Exia!

“Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny” (2006-08) Destiny, as a series, has a few problems. Okay it has a lot of problems. But the argument could be made that its existence was purely worth it for the reveal of Kira Yamato’s ultimate Gundam, and boy does it not know the meaning of the word subtlety. This thing will reign down an ungodly galactic firestorm on anyone who gets in his way, Coordinator or Natural alike. Thanks to its Super Dragoon System, the Strike Freedom is able to zip around the cosmos in the blink of an eye, before busting out more weapons than any other Mobile suit to date! The perfect weapon for Kira “Jesus” Yamato. Before we reveal our number one pick, here are a few honourable mentions. “Mobile Suit Gundam” (1979-80) There’s just no beating the original. The poster boy of the Gundam franchise and the inspiration for many mecha series that followed, the first Gundam isn’t much for bells and whistles, but it more than makes up for it with its legendary exploits. With blaster and beam sabre in hand, along with young pilot Amuro Ray at the helm, it managed to repel the likes of the Principality of Zeon in the One Year War, all the while clashing with the Red Comet himself, Char Aznable.
