The world of One Piece is mostly covered by water, making seafood very popular. So it only seems natural then that chefs everywhere dream of finding an ocean where fish and sea life from all four cardinal Blue oceans and the equatorial Grand Line mingle. Referred to as All Blue, discovering it is the ambition of the Straw Hat Pirates’ resident cook, Sanji Some fans think All Blue lies adjacent to Reverse Mountain, the entrance to the Grand Line from all four Blues. Others believe the label could be applied to Fishman Island, the undersea gateway between the Grand Line’s first and second halves. Wherever it lies, One Piece fans are sure to find out eventually.

As Luffy’s father and the leader of the Revolutionary movement trying to overthrow the corrupt World Government, Monkey D. Dragon is one of the most prominent figures in the series and fans have been puzzling over his identity for the greater part of the series. What little is known, is that he was born in the Goa Kingdom in East Blue, like his son, and that he left before Luffy (Loo-fee) was old enough to remember him, leaving him to be brought up by his grandfather. Why he began the Revolutionaries, who Luffy’s mother is, and much of his other history remains a tightly held secret.

Though it has several translations into English, Haki primarily means “spirit” or “ambition.” The force, despite being formally introduced late in the series’ first half, was foreshadowed in the very first arc. Haki is essentially an embodiment of will, whereby its user can sense their foes’ moves, intimidate opponents to the point that they faint, and use it to strengthen their attacks, even bypassing defenses offered by Devil Fruits. What’s unclear is if it’s hereditary or derived from an individual’s character. Either way, the ability can be developed and improved upon.

The world of One Piece has everything from dragons to fluffy-tailed dwarves, but one of its oddest peculiarities is the vast disparity in size between some of its humans. Let’s be clear: we’re not talking about giants. There are giants in One Piece, but they’re a race of their own. Humans can range from anywhere between three and twenty two feet tall. Some are even born with horns or wings. Recently, a possible explanation has emerged, when it was revealed that the World Government has been conducting gigantification experiments for many years in order to enhance their soldiers. It’s possible that the bizarre features some humans have in the current storyline are the result of their ancestors being experimented on.

Marshall D. Teach, better known as Blackbeard, is one of One Piece’s central antagonists. Part of what makes him such an intimidating villain is the fact that he has been able to do what no one else in the world has: acquire the abilities of more than one Devil Fruit! After he and his crew murdered Whitebeard, Blackbeard somehow managed to extract the shockwave creating ability of his former captain. Normally, eating two Devil Fruits causes someone to die, so Blackbeard’s act was a definite game-changer. It’s mentioned that something about Teach’s body is special, but it’s not elaborated on. With rumors that Blackbeard is taking more abilities, his inevitable battle with Luffy is sure to be memorable.

Bartholomew Kuma is an enormous, surprisingly soft-spoken, cyborg prototype and member of the Seven Warlords. Once a tyrannical pirate and revolutionary, he, like the other ex-pirate Warlords, was given a pardon in exchange for lending his power to the government. Kuma went one step further than the others, however, and allowed them to turn him into a Terminator-esque Pacifista cyborg, which eventually robbed him of his free will. As a former member of the Revolutionary Army, fans have often wondered what drove Kuma to give himself over to the very government he once sought to bring down.

Devil Fruit bestows superhuman and supernatural abilities to those that consume them, at the cost of becoming unable to swim. Many of the series’ prominent characters have eaten one, but very few people in the world of One Piece know much about how they work or where they come from. Some things are generally known about their functions, such as how there can be only a single user of an ability at a time, or that no one, except Blackbeard, can eat more than one. It’s rumored that they were created by a Sea Devil and are said to have come from somewhere in the Grand Line. Beyond that, only the scientist Doctor Vegapunk has supposedly learned more.

Many people in the series have the middle initial D. Some are related, such as the Monkey D. family. Some are not even human, like the giant Jaguar D. Saul. All seem to have significant importance in the storyline, if not history. Another odd thing many share is the fact that, of those who have died or been close to death, every one, with the exception of Blackbeard, has smiled before the end. Recently, it has been revealed that the D.’s are regarded as the natural enemies of the World Government’s corrupt Nobles. Whatever its meaning, D. is sure to cause a storm of trouble for the world.

How do you lose one hundred years of history? Intentional censorship, that’s how. What little information remains is primarily found on the monolithic Poneglyphs huge stones inscribed in a language few can read. What is known is that the World Government, which was formed shortly after the gap and after a battle with an unnamed Great Kingdom, is responsible for suppressing the knowledge and study of the missing years. Part of their aim is to keep secret a trio of powerful weapons left behind by the fallen kingdom, capable of great destruction.

It’s the title of the series and Luffy and many other pirates’ goal, yet little has been revealed about One Piece itself. Supposedly left on the final island in the Grand Line, Raftel, One Piece is the name given by the late Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, to his greatest treasure. Some things can be inferred though. It’s unlikely to be a monetary treasure, as Roger, like Luffy, did not value money or gold. There’s also the fact that One Piece has often been mentioned along with the Void Century and the Will of D. Could One Piece be the name of the lost kingdom? Or the source of Devil Fruits? Only time, and an epic pirate tale, will tell.
