Top 10 One Piece Fan Theories That Could Be True
Top 10 One Piece Fan Theories
Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 “One Piece” fan theories.
For this list, we’ll be looking at the most popular, plausible, and intriguing theories crafted by fans of the long running anime and manga. Naturally, since some of these involve the possible endgame of the series, there will be plenty of spoilers, both real and theoretical, including up to date info from the manga.
If there’s a surprisingly plausible “One Piece” theory you find surprised didn’t make our list, theorize why we forgot it in the comments.
#10: Crocodile is Luffy’s Mother
This one’s pretty bizarre. However, it’s so popular, we had to touch on it. During his meeting with Ivankov, Crocodile is blackmailed with certain information Ivankov possesses about him. Many believe that Iva used his gender-changing hormone powers to turn Lady Croc into a Sir. Crocodile even looks androgynous as a kid. Okay, but Luffy’s mother? Crocodile did try to kill him, several times! However, Dragon’s full name and familial ties to Luffy were huge secrets, even to close associates, like Ivankov. Most notably, proponents of the theory point to Crocodile’s huge shift in attitude during Marineford, since he helps to protect Luffy on multiple occasions - after the world learns of Luffy and Dragon’s connection. Crazy? Yes. But, not entirely implausible.
#9: Rocks is Dragon’s Father
Monkey D. Garp has never stated that Dragon is his son. He has called Luffy the child of his child, not the son of his son. “But they have the same family name!” Yes - but, in Japanese culture, it’s not unheard of for a man to take a woman’s family name, if her family is of higher status. Okay, maybe Dragon isn’t Garp’s son, but why would Rocks D. Xebec be his dad instead? Well, along with some facial similarities and the fact that both are considered the most heinous criminals of their age, there’s also Rocks’ namesake - Rock the Brazilian. And what country has author Eiichiro Oda stated Luffy, Dragon’s son, would be from in real life? Brazil. Coincidence? Probably. But it’s intriguing, nonetheless.
#8: Law Will Make Luffy Immortal
Trafalgar D. Water Law has one of the most broken Devil Fruits in the series. With the Op-Op Fruit’s operation powers, Law can manipulate anything in a given area, including people’s bodies. But Law’s fruit is highly sought after because of a particular ability it has - to grant someone else perpetual immortality through surgery, at the cost of the user’s life. While this raises plenty of questions, the most important is - who will Law use it on himself? Oda wouldn’t just drop that ability without making Law use it. And the answer most people land on is Luffy. While Law plays it cool, he clearly believes in Luffy. We could easily envision Law giving his life to make sure Luffy goes on living - permanently.
#7: Shanks & Luffy Will Have a Davy Back Fight
If there’s a single “One Piece” arc people mistake for filler, it’s the Davy Back Fight. Besides introducing Aokiji, it doesn’t feel important. But many theorists believe that the ridiculous pirate competition is actually very crucial. Some theorize that when Luffy does finally reunite with Shanks, he will challenge his mentor to prove his superiority; fulfilling his promise to gather a stronger crew than Shanks and surpass him. And sure, they could just battle - but wouldn’t a Davy Back Fight be more fun? There could be a sharpshooting competition between Usopp and his father, Yasopp, and a duel between Luffy and Shanks. A more serious twist on the Davy Back Fight with the final Poneglyph to Laugh Tale on the line would be awesome!
#6: Law is a Member of SWORD
SWORD is a still mysterious faction in the Marines. While their overall purpose remains unknown, they have had at least one member go undercover as a pirate, X Drake. Law, meanwhile, grew up admiring Doflamingo’s brother, Rocinante/Corazon, who was himself an undercover Marine. Law and Drake have had several other connections, from Drake being on the same island where Corazon died, to him freeing Law on Wano. In addition, Law is tied to the mysterious Rocky Port Incident, which another SWORD member, Koby, was involved in. “One Piece” is a small world, so these could be mere chance connections. But wouldn’t it make sense for Law, whose childhood hero was an undercover Marine, to grow up and become one himself?
#5: Blackbeard Will Eat 3 Devil Fruits
Marshall D. Teach, or Blackbeard, as he’s more often known, is one of the most intriguing villains in the series. He has done what no one else ever has - eaten two Devil Fruits. Through an unknown method, Blackbeard took Whitebeard’s quake powers after his death. We’re only told that Teach’s body is special. Some think that Blackbeard has already eaten a 3rd devil fruit, based on his jolly roger having 3 skulls. A Mythical Zoan type, perhaps a cerberus, which has 3 heads, or a kraken, which has 3 hearts, would certainly fit the theme. Others believe he has yet to eat a 3rd. A Zoan-type would give him “one of each,” and he’d only want the best, right? We can think of some candidates…
#4: Hidden in the Left Eye
This is a complex theory, so if you want more details check out YouTubers YUDE-RON or Ohara’s videos, as they came up with and popularized it. But, the gist of it is this: Laugh Tale is located on the missing left eye of the skull that once made up Jaya. Many characters in “One Piece” have marks on their left eyes or sides of their faces, hinting at this connection. And while the right eye went into the sky, what if the left eye sank to the ocean’s bottom? And where’s there a huge hole in the ocean? Under Enies Lobby - an island where it’s always sunny. With Joy Boy having a connection to the sun god Nika. It’s…certainly a journey!
#3: The Red Line Will Be Destroyed
In the “One Piece” world, there’s one continent - the Red Line. This massive red walled land mass circles the world, dividing the world both physically into the Four Blue seas, but also because the tyrannical Celestial Dragons rule from atop it. It has long been theorized that Luffy will destroy the Red Line somehow, since he is prophesied to destroy Fishman Island, which lies directly beneath it. If the Red Line is destroyed, so many of the Straw Hats’ dreams come true, especially Sanji, since his aim is to find the All Blue, a fabled sea made up of every Blue sea. Without the Red Line and Celestial Dragons, all people would be free. The world would be whole, it would be in - “one piece.”
#2: Luffy’s Hidden Dream is…
It was long theorized, and recently confirmed, that becoming Pirate King isn’t Luffy’s only goal. Luffy declares his dream to his brothers in a flashback, but the audience doesn’t hear it. Ace told it to Yamato, and Luffy recently tells his crew his dream in the manga, eliciting laughter. It’s suggested Roger had the same dream and others reacted similarly when he told them. However, it’s never been stated directly. The prevailing theory is that a young Luffy, who loved spending time with Shanks’ fun-loving crew, had an equally childish dream - to throw the world’s biggest party! What do the Straw Hats do after every adventure? Have a big party! And Luffy being Pirate King and freeing the world would help create a massive celebration!

#1: The One Piece is Binks’ Sake
There are many theories on what the One Piece treasure is, but this one has gained a lot of traction, thanks to YouTuber Artur. The basics are these: the term “one piece” has several meanings, including “that which unites people.” And that fits the song “Binks’ Sake.” A song which may tell the story of the Ancient Kingdom through its lyrics and has the Japanese equivalent of the term “laugh tale” in them! The treasure is believed to be Binks’ literal sake. Sake figures prominently throughout the story, uniting characters! And what do the Roger Pirates sing before they reach Laugh Tale? “Binks’ Sake!” No wonder they laughed! Finding all that sake would certainly help with Luffy’s worldwide party too!
