Top 20 Movie Couples of the Century So Far

Love is in the air! Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 10 Netflix Romance Movie Couples.    For this list, we’ll be looking at our favorite pairings from Netflix original films.

#10: Gabriela Diaz & Jake Taylor “Falling Inn Love” (2019)

Some of the best on-screen couples are the ones who get off to a rocky start. In “Falling Inn Love”, Gabriela and Jake don’t exactly take a liking to one another right away, but that’s what makes it so satisfying when they finally realize that their passionate feelings are closer to love than hate. American Gabriela finds herself restoring a crumbling inn in small town New Zealand and Jake is the unlikely partner who helps her along the way. The plot of this rom com may be predictable, but sometimes we need a plot that doesn’t exactly take us by surprise.

#9: Violet Markey & Theodore Finch "All the Bright Places" (2020)

It would be easy to make the mistake of going into viewing "All the Bright Places" thinking it’s going to be a lighthearted teen romance, but this story is much deeper and darker than it may initially seem. It takes a look at the different mental health issues being faced by Violet, whose sister recently passed away, and Finch, who has always been fascinated with death and has suicidal tendencies. Yes, it’s a love story and you’ll fall for these two characters both as individuals and as a couple, but we’ll warn you that there’s no happily ever after here.

#8: Harper Moore & Charlie Young “Set It Up” (2018)

The premise of “Set It Up” is that two exhausted assistants, Harper and Charlie, want to set up their high powered bosses in an effort to give them a distraction. But of course, there’s more than one romantic plot taking place in this movie and while they’re not looking to find romance with each other, fate has other ideas. Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell are charming in the lead roles and have an undeniable chemistry that makes this modern movie feeling both fresh as well as reminiscent of some of the classics in the romantic comedy genre.

#7: Abbie & Sam “Irreplaceable You” (2018)

There’s something so endearing about couples who started off as childhood sweethearts. In “Irreplaceable You,” we get to see Abbie and Sam’s relationship develop from their youth to their adolescence to adulthood. Though their love story seems picture perfect and they’re ready to finally tie the knot, they get the distressing news that Abbie has terminal cancer. She decides to try to find a woman to replace her in Sam’s life, but the audience knows as well as Sam does that it’s an impossible task. This one’s a tearjerker, so get your tissues ready!

#6: Willowdean "Dumplin'" Dickson & Bo Larson "Dumplin'" (2018)

While the primary focus of 2018’s "Dumplin'" may not be Willowdean’s quest for love, the romantic subplot is a sweet one. Will has a big crush on Bo, who works with her at the local diner, but she’s lacking self confidence when it comes to his feelings for her. While he seems to make it clear that he’s interested, Will sabotages the relationship by doubting what his intentions are. Luckily, they manage to develop some clear lines of communication in the end because this couple is straight-up adorable.

#5: Jenny Young & Nate Davis "Someone Great" (2019)

"Someone Great" teaches us the lesson that not all great couples are meant to end up together. Gina Rodriguez and Lakeith Stanfield star as Jenny and Nate in this comedy that can go from hilarious to heartbreaking in just a few quick moments. While we mostly see these characters after they’ve already broken up, we’re treated to flashbacks of their relationship that show the audience exactly what Jenny is fighting for. While we sometimes wish this movie ended differently, it’s a realistic look at how relationships often evolve when you’re still finding your footing in life.

#4: Ellie Chu & Aster Flores “The Half of It” (2020)

Released in 2020, “The Half of It” amassed an instant fan base when it was released because of its premise, which felt both fresh and familiar. The action starts because high schooler Paul wants help writing love letters to his crush, Aster, but his ghost writer Ellie is harboring feelings of her own. We don’t get to actually see Ellie and Aster being in a relationship, but what we do get is a beautifully shot and written film that shows their love story blossom in an unconventional way - and it makes us wonder what would happen for them in the future.

#3: Sasha Tran & Marcus Kim “Always Be My Maybe” (2019)

When we meet Sasha and Marcus, they’re childhood besties and neighbors living in San Francisco. While they’re close throughout their adolescence, they screw it all up when they decide to sleep together, which is one of the things that drives them apart. When they’re reunited years later, they couldn’t be more different: with Sasha working as an uber successful celebrity chef and Marcus still living with his dad. While the two may be an unlikely pairing, it’s obvious that their old chemistry hasn’t faded. And even though their lives have taken different paths, they’re totally meant to be.

#2: Alex Truelove & Elliot “Alex Strangelove” (2018)

At first, it seems like “Alex Strangelove” is going to be a love story between Alex and his best friend Claire, who he escalates his relationship with at the beginning of the film. But Alex soon meets Elliot, who is openly gay, and he forces Alex to examine his own sexuality. We see the two young men develop a friendship, but there’s clearly a lot more going on beneath the surface. The film is largely about Alex’s own journey to discover who he wants to be, but we get enough glimpses at his relationship with Elliot that it leaves us wanting so much more, even after the final scenes. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions. Lona Skinner & Bennett Russell  “Candy Jar” (2018) Margaret Delacourt & Kevin Richards “The Princess Switch” (2018) Shelly "Elle" Evans & Noah Flynn “The Kissing Booth” (2018) Addie Moore & Louis Waters  “Our Souls at Night” (2017) Lin Jianqing & Xiaoxiao Fang  “Us and Them” (2018)

#1: Lara Jean Covey & Peter Kavinsky “To All the Boys I've Loved Before” (2018)

Netflix seriously upped their game when they released “To All the Boys I've Loved Before” in 2018. This teen rom com had echoes of John Hughes classics, but also has all of the modern conventions to make it appeal to audiences both young and old alike. At the center of the story is the relationship between the introverted homebody Lara Jean and the popular jock Peter Kavinsky. While their relationship begins as a ruse in order to make his ex jealous and throw off Lara Jean’s real crush, Josh, things get very real very quickly. There’s a reason the entire internet is obsessed with these two!
