Top 10 Netflix Movies That NEED a Sequel
#10: “Dumplin’” (2018)
This Anne Fletcher-directed hit based on a Julie Murphy novel tells the story of Willowdean Dickson, nicknamed Dumplin’ by her former-beauty-queen mother, played by Jennifer Aniston. As charming as it is hilarious, “Dumplin’” marks a true coming out party for its star, Danielle Macdonald, as well as a nice return to form for Aniston. In the vein of movies like “Little Miss Sunshine”, the story centers around a misfit trying to break into the world of beauty pageants while proving that beauty is truly in the eyes of the beholder, and that self-acceptance reigns supreme. With such a lived-in film world, populated by loveable and quirky characters, it’s no wonder this movie deserves a follow-up.
#9: “The Old Guard” (2020)
Something about the action-fantasy genre lends itself well to sequels and remakes- just ask Star Wars, or Star Trek, or Star-Lord from “Guardians of the Galaxy”… Given that this movie, about immortal mercenaries defending Earth and their own freedom, sat in the top 10 most viewed Netflix Movies of all time in July 2020, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that a sequel is already in discussion. And with the ever-versatile Charlize Theron expressing interest, the sky's the limit for this potential franchise. What can we say? The woman knows how to kick-butt as well as she knows how to put butts in seats.
#8: “Okja” (2017)
One of the first true critical successes for Netflix Studios, 2017’s “Okja” proved to be a breakout hit not just for the streaming site but also for the film’s director and writer, Bong Joon-ho. Boasting a wonderfully zany cast, this American-South Korean co-production dealing with the ethics of the livestock industry in a capitalist world won over audiences and critics alike with its over-the-top fairy tale narrative, its poignant and loveable titular character, and its dazzling cinematic look. Nominated for the Palme d’Or, “Okja” proves that audiences are still pining for original content and for the chance to see Tilda Swinton wear braces. Based on the pedigree of its writer/director, we know we’d be first in line, or first on the couch, to catch a sequel!
#7: “Set It Up” (2018)
This feel-good movie about two long-time assistants setting up their overbearing bosses boasts a fun cast of characters in a sexy, New York setting. Starring Zoe Deutch and Glen Powell, with support from seasoned actors, Lucy Liu and Taye Diggs, as well as a memorable albeit limited turn by Pete Davidson, the movie wins on its charm and charisma. The world can always use more romance, and Netflix’s penchant for fetching rom-coms makes “Set It Up” highly eligible for a sequel, or maybe more. There’s a breeziness to the plot and a likeability to all those involved that makes for easy viewing, over and over again.
#6: “Roma” (2018)
For a quiet movie with a relatively relaxed plot, Alfonso Cuarón’s “Roma” screams with passion, nostalgia, and a desire to be seen far and wide. A contemplative character study told with a childlike grace and innocence, this film’s power comes from its subtle portrayal of class structures in 1970s’ Mexico City. As it hums along, it wins viewers over with its sympathetic rendering of a character-type we seldom see in a Hollywood movie. Given its originality, its flawless technique, and its success at the Oscars that year, it’s no surprise this Netflix original makes it onto our list. Who isn’t interested in a follow-up to Cleo’s story?
#5: “Marriage Story” (2019)
Noah Baumbach has this way of making movies that are downers, but not bummers. And that’s how we’d describe 2019’s “Marriage Story” about a gruelling divorce and the toll it takes on a once loving, idyllic couple and their only child. Beautifully acted and resoundingly well-received by critics and audiences, the film plays so artfully and emotionally that one cannot look away, even while watching the disintegration of love in real time. With on-point performances by Scar-Jo and Adam Driver, consistently hitting the right emotional chords without veering into melodrama, there’s a frank watchability to the film that’s rare to find in straight dramas. A sequel may be unlikely despite being well-deserved. Just remember to bring the box of tissues next time.
#4: “Klaus” (2019)
2019 was a good year for Netflix, and that point is epitomized by the animated classic, “Klaus”. This unsuspecting hit, which was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards, proves that audiences are still smitten by a good old Christmas story. Given the success of so many animated franchises, it’s no wonder this Netflix property would be well-deserving of a sequel. However it’s interesting to note that in an interview, director Sergio Pablos stated emphatically that there would be no sequel to the film. Time will tell, of course, but we for one respect the integrity of a filmmaker who refuses to capitalize on a sequel to a hit movie. Because if Christmas teaches us anything, it’s that money and material possessions aren’t the most important things in life.
#3: “The Half of It” (2020)
We’re not telling tales out of school when we say diversity in movies is an important thing, and this Netflix Original ticks a lot of boxes when it comes to showing a unique perspective. A high school coming-of-age movie about love and sexuality, the film maintains a level of heart and integrity throughout that separates it from other entries in the genre. With so many viewpoints brought up in such a compact, well-told story, the comedy-drama packs a punch beyond its weight class. Many movies that shift gears from high school to college make for compelling sequels and this one would be no different. Whenever you’re ready for it, Netflix, so are we!
#2: “Always Be My Maybe” (2019)
Sure, the plot line seems predictable: lazy, unmotivated guy stuck in arrested development falls for his childhood sweetheart who’s now a high-powered celebrity-chef, and learns valuable lessons about growing up along the way… But “Always Be My Maybe” is anything but trite and predictable. The film’s two main leads are so charismatic and have such great chemistry together that we forget we’re watching a movie altogether. With a scene-stealing cameo by Keanu Reeves, the story just oozes likeability. We think all of us secretly wish we were friends with Sasha Tran and Marcus Kim, and their heartwarming and downright hilarious story makes for endless rewatching. Sequel, please!

#1: “Bird Box” (2018)
One of the most viewed movies in the Netflix Originals canon, “Bird Box” took the world by storm when it hit in 2018. Given what transpired in the world just a few years later, the thriller was probably more prescient than it hoped to be. Either way, when a movie literally spawns a viral social media movement, you know it’s struck a deep and resonant chord. Led by box-office giant, Sandra Bullock, this post-apocalyptic flick about global horrors and the lengths one woman will go to to reestablish meaning in her life, was likely the product of great timing as much as it was about a winning, involving story. With a sequel already in the works, all we can do is sit by and eagerly wait!
