VOICE OVER: Phoebe de Jeu WRITTEN BY: Mimi Kenny
Hollywood and marital bliss rarely go hand-in-hand. For this list, we'll be looking at movies that allegedly ended marriages or long-term partnerships. Our countdown includes “Days of Thunder”, "Titanic", “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”, and more!

#10: “Titanic” (1997)

“Titanic” changed director James Cameron’s life in many ways. It was the highest-grossing film of all-time for over a decade and earned him an Oscar for Best Director. On a less-happy note, it might have ended his marriage to “Terminator” star Linda Hamilton. During the film’s notoriously hectic shoot, Cameron purportedly became smitten with actress Suzy Amis, who played Rose’s granddaughter, Lizzy Calvert. Cameron and Hamilton - his fourth wife - stayed together before finally splitting in 1999. A year later, he and Amis got married and have been together ever since. Is the fifth time the charm?

Johnny Depp and French singer-model-actress Vanessa Paradis never wed, but they had been together for nearly 15 years and had two children together before splitting in 2012. During the filming of this Hunter S. Thompson adaptation, Depp allegedly fell in love with co-star Amber Heard. The actors announced their engagement in 2014 and got married the following year. However, Heard filed for divorce two years later in 2017, and the fallout has been extremely ugly, with very disturbing claims from both sides. Things seem to have turned out better for Paradis, who married French writer-actor-director Samuel Benchetrit in 2018.

#8: “Dream House” (2011)

Oscar-winning actress Rachel Weisz and acclaimed director Darren Aronofosky got together in 2001, were engaged in 2005, and had a son in 2006. However, they never got married. Could the forgotten psychological horror movie “Dream House” be partially to blame? Weisz and her co-star Daniel Craig had been friends for years, but started dating in 2010, and eventually got married in June 2011, three months before the movie was released. Craig himself split from fianceé Satsuki Mitchell in 2010, the same year that Weisz and Aronofosky announced their separation. Weisz and Craig are still together and had a daughter together in 2018. At least some good came out of this critical and commercial cinematic failure.

#7: “Days of Thunder” (1990)

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman were arguably the Hollywood power couple of the ‘90s. But the start of their relationship reportedly came from the end of another one. While filming this racing drama, Cruise was married to actress Mimi Rogers. He and his leading lady allegedly had an on-set affair, and Rogers, with their relationship already in rocky territory, divorced Cruise a month into the production of the movie. Cruise married Kidman the following year. They later co-starred in “Far and Away” and “Eyes Wide Shut” before divorcing in 2001. It seems “Days of Thunder” didn’t result in a lifetime of marital bliss.

#6: “Stage Beauty” (2004)

There’s never an ideal time to break up with someone, but maybe don’t do it when they’re seven months pregnant... Billy Crudup’s girlfriend of almost eight years, actress Mary-Louise Parker, was carrying his child when he and Claire Danes were filming this romantic period drama together, and became romantic in real life. Crudup and Danes split in 2006. Since then, Danes has been candid about her experience and the negative reaction to the relationship, partially chalking it up to her not examining the potential consequences. Danes later married her “Evening” co-star Hugh Dancy in 2009, with whom she now has two sons.

#5: “Proof of Life” (2000)

Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid were married for nearly a decade when Ryan made this kidnapping thriller with Russell Crowe. During filming, Ryan and Crowe were caught getting cozy, and she and Quaid subsequently announced their separation in the year 2000. The marriage might've not lasted for much longer anyway, as Ryan says Quaid had cheated on her during their union. Either way, the two co-stars weren’t together for long, and “Proof of Life '' is pretty much only remembered for the behind-the-scenes drama and perhaps tarnishing Ryan’s “girl next door” image for good. Do you think the affair ruined the movie’s box office chances?

#4: “The Misfits” (1961)

In her tragically short life, Marilyn Monroe was as known for her relationships as she was for her acting. "The Misfits," her final completed film, was also her lone collaboration with writer and husband Arthur Miller. Production of the film, directed by John Huston and co-starring Clark Gable, was rocked by Monroe’s substance abuse and Miller's constant script revisions. Soon after filming ended, so did their marriage. Monroe passed away the following year, and “The Misfits” has since been regarded as one of her finest films. We can only imagine how things might’ve turned out had Marilyn not passed away so young.

#3: “To Have and Have Not” (1944)

Hollywood cheating scandals are by no means a recent phenomenon. While filming this classic romance, directed by Howard Hawks, Humphrey Bogart was married to actress Mayo Methot, although their relationship was turbulent. During this time, Bogart had an affair with his co-star Lauren Bacall, who was less than half his age. And it wasn’t just a brief fling for the leads; they married a year after the film’s release and were together until Bogart’s death in 1957. It was impossible to miss the chemistry between Bogie and Bacall, both on-set and on-screen, and “To Have and Have Not” remains an emotional classic.

#2: “Cleopatra” (1963)

A movie about the making of “Cleopatra” would likely be more engrossing than this film itself. During production of this notoriously expensive epic, stars Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton became smitten during their first love scene together. It sounds like a fairytale, until you learn that she was married to Eddie Fisher, and he was to Sybil Christopher. Taylor and Burton didn’t exactly have a “happily ever after,” either. After their wedding in 1964, they divorced 10 years later. They remarried in 1975, but split up for good a year later. Even Shakespeare himself would’ve been impressed by the drama of their relationship!

Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.

“Snow White and the Huntsman” (2012)

“Mind Over Murder” (2005)

“Northern Lights” (2009)

#1: “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” (2005)

Long before audiences had seen “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” they were talking about it. Specifically, they were discussing the rumors of an affair between its A-list leads, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Playing a husband and wife duo who find out they’re each assassins targeting the other, Pitt and Jolie’s chemistry is so intense it’s easy to see why Pitt and then-wife Jennifer Aniston split up. While Jolie says she did fall in love with Pitt on-set, she denies having an affair. The couple, better known as “Brangelina”, later got married and raised six kids together. After only two years of marriage, they separated acrimoniously, but not before another on-screen appearance together in “By the Sea”.
