VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton WRITTEN BY: Renée Camus
With "Deadpool 3" coming to the MCU, let's revist the movie moments that made us love Ryan Reynolds. Our countdown includes "National Lampoon's Van Wilder," "Definitely, Maybe," "The Proposal," and more!

#10: The Date “The Change-Up” (2011)

Also in:

Top 10 Movie Moments That Made us Fall in Love with Ryan Gosling

While the raunchy, fast-talking ladies’ man act can be entertaining, Reynolds is at his best when he shows his sweet charm and a bit of vulnerability. With “The Change-Up,” we get to see both sides of him. In this body-switch movie, irreverent, wise-cracking screw-up Mitch swaps bodies with dedicated, overworked lawyer and family man Dave, played by Jason Bateman. When “Mitch,” who’s really Dave, goes on a date with Olivia Wilde, the beautiful paralegal who works for him, he finds that his colleague is quite cheeky herself! What starts out as an imposed meeting turns into a fun date, and of course sets up the relationship that will help fix the real Mitch’s messed-up life.

#9: Want a Woodford? “Mississippi Grind” (2015)

Also in:

Top 10 Movie Moments That Made Us Love Chris Pine

In this slice of life buddy road trip movie, Reynolds plays Curtis, a gambler who befriends Ben Mendelsohn’s Gerry, a gambling addict down on his luck. After this meet-cute where Curtis beats Gerry at poker and buys him a high-end Woodford bourbon, the two new friends drive across the country to find an infamous poker tournament, and learn about themselves in the process. Curtis possesses a natural charisma, and the two men’s bromance grows instantly through the actors’ chemistry. Though Ryan’s Boston-ish accent seems to come and go, he’s so kind and genuine in the role that we can easily forgive it.

#8: The Fat Lady Should Be Singing “Blade: Trinity” (2004)

Also in:

Top 10 Movie Moments That Made Us Love The Rock

In this scene from the third movie in the “Blade” series, Reynolds’ Hannibal King finds himself in a spot of trouble, captured by the very vampires he’s hunting. But he remains cool under pressure, revealing that they’re about to be in considerable trouble themselves … any minute now. His timing is slightly off, as Wesley Snipes’ Blade makes his entrance late, but the moment perfectly captures Ryan’s trademark humor. He packed on 20 pounds of muscle for the role, and it most definitely shows! The 2004 film is Reynold’s first real action role and forms a perfect bridge between his status as both a romantic leading man and wise-cracking hero.

#7: Bodyguard vs. Hitman “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” (2017)

Reynolds’ penchant for both action and comedy are also on display in this 2017 movie. His character Michael Bryce is a bodyguard tasked with protecting hitman Darius Kincaid, played by Samuel L. Jackson. Kincaid is set to testify against a Belarussian dictator, which puts a target on his back, so Bryce agrees to get him to the International Criminal Court as a favor to his Interpol Agent ex-girlfriend, Elodie Yung’s Amelia Roussel. However, Bryce and Kincaid don’t exactly hit it off … This scene features everything we look for in a Reynolds movie: smart dialogue, a dash of romance, and fun action!

#6: Monty’s Showdown with Serena “Waiting. . .” (2005)

Also in:

Top 10 Monty Python Movie Moments

Reynolds echoes his breakout character Van Wilder in this raunchy comedy that also stars comedic leading lady Anna Faris. Monty is the classic overconfident smart-aleck, who works as head-honcho waiter in a chain restaurant. Faris plays waitress Serena, who dated Monty for a while. At a highpoint in the film, Serena takes Monty down a few pegs as they rehash their relationship in front of their dysfunctional waitstaff family. Monty’s obnoxious tone softens as she beats him down, but he’s happy to have her attention even if it’s negative. He’s left gobsmacked, revealing his true feelings after she walks away.

#5: Meeting Gwen’s Parents “National Lampoon's Van Wilder ” (2002)

Also in:

Top 10 Awkward Meeting the Parents Movie Scenes

The role of hard-partying super-senior Van Wilder put Ryan Reynolds on the map. The glib but charismatic student doesn’t realize his full potential, preferring to stay in the safety of school. But he gets a taste of the world outside of college when overachieving rival Richard pranks him by inviting him to a fancy dinner at the house of his romantic interest Gwen. Van’s adorable insecurity and vulnerability is on display as he realizes that Richard is trying to embarrass him in front of Gwen’s parents. But Van eventually surprises everyone when he charms the family with his ease and affability, coming out on top while being himself.

#4: Will & April Kiss “Definitely, Maybe” (2008)

Also in:

Reynolds plays the straight man in this sweet romantic comedy, as the father of young Abigail Breslin’s Maya. When Maya asks Will to tell her how he met her mom, who he’s now separated from, Will makes it a mystery between three women, changing their names. One of the three women is Isla Fisher’s April, a coworker who becomes an immediate friend. In this scene, April tells Will about her search for an inscribed copy of “Jane Eyre.” The two friends cross over to being lovers as they bond over Brontë and Nirvana, eventually giving into their passions in a brief kiss.

#3: Walking Jamie to the Door “Just Friends” (2005)

Also in:

Top 10 Walking in on Sex Scenes in Movies

In this hysterical romcom, Chris Brander has a lifelong crush on his high school bestie Jamie, played by Amy Smart, but she only sees him as her friend. His humiliation—in front of the whole school—turns him into a love ‘em and leave ‘em womanizer. But when an unplanned stop at his hometown a decade later makes him realize he has another shot with her, he immediately regresses into his shy-guy ways. Their lunch date ends horribly as he attempts small talk and then goes in for a kiss—with disastrous results. Reynolds channels his inner Jim Carrey as Chris chastises himself for his own awkward behavior - and Jamie catches him, making it even worse.

#2: Why Are You Naked? “The Proposal” (2009)

Also in:

Top 10 Movie Moments That Made Us Love Jake Gyllenhaal

Reynolds pairs up with Sandra Bullock in this haters-turned-lovers romcom. Andrew Paxton is the harried assistant to Bullock’s tough-as-nails Margaret, who learns she’s about to be deported. Instead, she forces Andrew into marrying her. In this scene, Margaret emerges from the shower, not realizing that Andrew is there. Listening to music, Andrew strips to his birthday suit, unaware that Margaret is looking for a towel. The two would-be lovers are literally thrown together as they slam into each other, completely naked. Looks like the universe is telling you something! Andrew reminds Margaret of this moment when he proposes to her for real. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions. #1: Superhero Landing “Deadpool” (2017)

Also in:

Top 20 Improvised Superhero Movie Moments

This role has the perfect blend of snark and humor, romance and action, hero and antihero for Reynolds’ talents. Deadpool is the smart-talking, foul-mouthed superhero who’s also painfully aware of his own place in the world. Self-deprecating comments, pop culture references, and meta observations abound in the snappy dialogue. A favorite is his commentary on the “superhero landing” pose, which he knows his villainous colleagues will use, despite how impractical it is. Reynolds is in command and as funny, clever, and charming as always, even when you can’t see his handsome face.
