It’s always better to be on the winning side. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’re counting down our picks for the top 10 movie gang fights. For this list, we’re looking at big screen fights between two or more groups who take to using their fists, knives, or guns to battle each other. However, we’re excluding the use of superpowers and are omitting spoofs like “Anchorman,” despite that fight being hilarious and memorable. Also there may be spoilers ahead, so SPOILER ALERT.

#10: Vatos Locos vs. Tres Puntos “Blood In Blood Out” (1993)

One of the more traditional gang fights on this list, this scene from the gritty and realistic crime drama sees The Vatos Locos ambush rivals Tres Puntos on a hill overlooking Los Angeles. Tres Puntos gang leader Spider quickly goes from acting tough to cowering on the ground when cornered by Vatos Locos members Miklo and Paco. They carve their gang letters into Spider’s chest and leave him squirming on the ground. Oh and if that wasn’t enough, then they shoot at each other to bring things to their final, deadly conclusion.

#9: The Jets vs. The Sharks “West Side Story” (1961)

The Story of West Side Story: From Stage to Screen

Nothing like an old-fashioned fist fight under an overpass... Unless, of course, it’s accompanied by jaunty music and choreographed dancing. This musical film inspired by Shakespeare's “Romeo and Juliet” sees feuding families replaced by New York City street gangs the Jets and the Sharks. Gang Leaders Riff and Bernardo tussle with a knife before both gangs join the brawl. Viewers particularly remember this fight because it contains all the emotion, music, and melodrama one would want and ask for.

#8: The Deuces vs. The Vipers “Deuces Wild” (2002)

Also in:

Top 20 Hilariously Awful Movie Fights

Set in Brooklyn in 1958, this film pits the Deuces gang, led by brothers Leon and Bobby, against the drug dealing Vipers gang, led by Marco. Ordered to make peace by a local mob boss, Leon refuses to forgive Marco for the rape of his girlfriend Betsy and challenges Marco to a fight down by the docks. Stylishly edited, this climactic battle shows these two gangs exchanging fists, knives, and baseball bats with bloody results.

#7: Chang Sing vs. Wing Kong “Big Trouble in Little China” (1986)

Though this film may star ‘80s action hero Kurt Russell, in this scene he is just a helpless bystander as two ancient Chinese societies fight in a Chinatown back alley. The Wing Kong ambush the Chang Sing during a funeral procession and rapidly make quick work of them. What started as a shootout then turns into what the film dubs a “Chinese standoff,” which basically means two gangs running at each other with weapons. Though this film does have supernatural elements, this fight keeps it old school.

#6: The Green Street Elite vs. The Millwall Firm “Green Street Hooligans” (2005)

Also known as “Green Street” back in the United Kingdom, this small film was a cult hit and it’s no surprise why. The drama’s climax puts the Green Street Elite against Millwall, their rivals with a bitter history. While it’s just fists for this fight, the results are just as deadly. Whether it’s the beautifully photographed slow motion or the haunting music, this scene is one of reasons that this indie flick became such a cult success.

#5: Li’l Zé’s Gang vs. Knockout Ned’s Gang “City of God” (2002)

This film from Brazil shows the gang life in the slums of Rio de Janeiro during the 1970s. This climactic scene starts innocently enough, with protagonist Rocket taking photos of a loose chicken on the street. But before long, he is caught between two rival gangs; one led by the violent and unbalanced Li’l Zé and the other led by the people’s hero Knockout Ned. A shootout on the street ensues and this frenetically edited and captivatingly shot brawl is a highlight among many in this Oscar-nominated crime drama.

#4: The Socs vs. The Greasers “The Outsiders” (1983)

Top 10 Movie Fights Where the Hero Takes Zero Damage

Who can forget this climactic fight from this drama based on the novel by S.E. Hinton? Challenged by the Socs to a rumble, the Greasers meet their challenge, which culminates in a giant fistfight in the rain. At first evenly matched, the Socs end up running away scared by the end, which undoubtedly excited audiences. It’s easy to see why since the main Greasers are played by the likes of Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, and Tom Cruise.

#3: The Droogs vs. Billyboy’s Gang “A Clockwork Orange” (1971)

Top 10 Fictional Movie Gangs

This gleefully dark scene utilizes startling and violent images with joyful sounding classical music to show the brutality and violence of the fight. In this dystopian future, the Droogs are one of countless London youth gangs and they’re led by Alex DeLarge. In this fight, they grab anything from wooden tables to glass bottles to come out victorious. Though the film features many violent scenes and at times can be quite hard to watch, there is something strangely satisfying about seeing the Droogs in their iconic bowler hats and white outfits here.

#2: The Natives vs. The Dead Rabbits “Gangs of New York” (2002)

Though we could’ve chosen the historical drama’s climax, where Leonardo DiCaprio leads his gang against Daniel Day-Lewis’ Bill the Butcher, but we’re choosing the fight in the film’s opening scene because of its lasting impact. Memorable for its snarky dialogue, anachronistic score, and of course, its brutal violence, in this hand-to-hand combat in Lower Manhattan’s Five Points, the snowy ground is very quickly covered with blood - mostly due to Bill the Butcher. Oh yeah, and did we mention he fights with a meat cleaver? Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions. - The Wanderers vs. The Ducky Boys “The Wanderers” (1979) - Justice Forever vs. The Motherf***er’s Gang “Kick-Ass 2” (2013) - The Montagues vs. The Capulets “Romeo + Juliet” (1996)

#1: The Warriors vs. The Baseball Furies “The Warriors” (1979)

Also in:

Top 10 Movie Fights in Bathrooms

Is there another other gang movie more iconic than this one? Though we could’ve picked any of the many fights from this 1979 cult classic, it’s this one in Riverside Park that sticks out the most. With the Warriors framed and on the run from every gang in the city, the remaining members of the gang are chased into a nearby park by the Baseball Furies. Wearing facepaint, baseball uniforms and wielding bats, the Furies appear to have the upper hand against the outnumbered and unarmed Warriors – but, in the end, they are no match against the titular gang’s courage and cleverness.
