Wait, what just happened? Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we are counting down our picks for the top ten most WTF ending in video games.
For this list, we’ll be looking at the conclusions to video games that left players absolutely flabbergasted. They can considered either epic or lacklustre, as long as they caught us completely off guard or made us generally go “WTF?”. And as you might have guessed, watch out for spoilers down the line.
#10: She’s a Lady - “Metroid” (1987)
Samus Aran is the greatest bounty hunter the galaxy has ever known. Armed with an iconic power suit and arm cannon, they’ve taken down the scourge of the cosmos time and time again, including that of the ruthless Space Pirate Ridley as well as the terrifying creature known as Mother Brain. Considering this was the eighties, all this badassery could surely only be the work of a male. Well, Samus turned the table on all preconceptions as at the game’s ending she revealed her true gender to be that of a female. It may not seem shocking today, but back in the 80’s this was a really big deal.
#9: Welcome to Dubai - “Spec Ops: The Line” (2012)
Captain Martin Walker’s journey into the heart of darkness is not a pleasant one. After killing so many people, including a whole slew of innocent civilians with white phosphorus, he starts to suffer vivid hallucinations. Upon finally confronting the man thought responsible for all the horrors he endured throughout Dubai, players are forced to choose Walker’s fate. They can either let the illusions lead to his death, surrender him to allied forces, or let loose the killer within and go on a killing spree. War truly does bring out the monsters in men.
#8: Happy Ending…for Red XIII - “Final Fantasy VII” (1997)
So we’ve finally done it, we’ve brought down Sephiroth in one of the most epic boss battles of all time, but there’s still the case of Meteor! How are our heroes going to get out of this one? Oh, I guess the lifestream is going to take care of it. It’s going to be epic to see Meteor explode and … Wait why are the credits rolling now? Wait, we’re now 500 years in the future? And Red XIII got himself a family? What happened to everyone else? Why is the talking dog the only one that got some action? I think we missed something.
#7: Minerva - “Assassin’s Creed II” (2009)
By this point, we had just about wrapped our heads around the fact we could travel into the past and inhabit the bodies of Desmond’s ancestors, and in all honesty we just thrilled that we were going to be beating the crap out of a less than benevolent pope as the Italian stallion of assassins; Ezio. And then we met Minerva. Genetic time-travel is one thing, but talking to the digital memory of a creator of humanity whose directly addressing Desmond about a future calamity that can only be prevented by going back into the past and…wait, start over again.
#6: The Most Japanese Ending Ever - “Monster Hunter Generations” (2016)
We’ve slain monsters of all shapes and sizes, bringing down the fated four with nothing more that some clever tactics and outrageously large weapons. Surely our ending should be one of triumph as we stand tall as the greatest Hunter the world has ever - what the hell is with all this dancing? That’s right, after a nail-biting battle against the final boss, you get to sit back as the Meowstress and company start to perform what has to be the most mismatched song and dance routine we have ever witnessed. Admittedly…it is quite catchy.
#5: Red, Blue or Green - “Mass Effect 3” (2012)
Now, please take into account we aren’t talking about the extended cut, which managed to bring some much needed closure to the series and actually made for fitting conclusions. The original endings on the other hand are almost downright inexcusable. As the final battle against the Reapers reaches its climax, Shepard must decide which path to take; Destroy, Control or Synergy. Sounds like an interesting premise, the only problem is the only consequences we see are the Milky Way get consumed with one of three colours, and that’s it. Fans, to say the least, were not best pleased.
#4: Booker Takes a Dip - “Bioshock Infinite” (2013)
Nowadays we’ve had time to digest the various symbolic implications of what this ending actually met, but at the time? We were completely lost! After discovering that Comstock and Booker were one and the same person just from parallel dimensions (and the latter promptly drowning the former) multiple Elizabeth’s suddenly appear and slowly begin to drown Booker as well. Because that will somehow prevent the past and future of…no, we’re still totally lost. Hey Troy Baker, can you fill us in?
#3: Finishing the Fight…Later - “Halo 2” (2004)
This was it. The culmination of humanity’s war against the Covenant, the revelation about the Prophets’ betrayal, the looming threat of the Flood, it was all going to come down to this singular epic battle with the Master Chief at the helm. Nothing was going to compare to this glorious apex of gaming awesome… Wait the final mission has us playing as the Arbiter? Where’s the Chief? Oh there he is so what’s the plan Chief? (Sir Finishing the Fight) Awesome! Let’s roll out and…why is the screen cutting to black? Why are the credits rolling? Ah god damn it!
#2: What. The. Hell. Is. That?! - “Inside” (2016)
You have to give the creators major props; no one was expecting things to turn out like this. As the nameless child, you’ve overcome some pretty disturbing situations and been exposed to truly horrific sights, though for what reason we still had no freaking idea. The dystopian society, The remote-controlled corpses, The creepy mermaids, The people hunting us down? What does it all mean?! Wait ... why are we now taking control of … whatever this is? Is this…symbolic? Is the whole thing a metaphor for a tumour inside a body? And why do we suddenly stop moving on the beach?
#1: The Dog - “Silent Hill 2” (2001)
Joke endings are a little more common now and have become something of a running gag among the Silent Hill games, but can you imagine the faces of players who inadvertently came across this ending? After going through the harrowing experience of being hunted down by Pyramid Head, only to discover the whole thing was a maniacal plan put together by…a dog in a control room. We’re guessing everyone who saw this shared James’s reaction of disbelief. Sure, you have to try pretty hard to unlock it but even then, nothing can prepare you for the sight of Silent Hill’s one true overlord in all of its fluffiness.
