No amount of therapy can solve their issues. Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we are counting down our picks for the Top 10 Most Messed Up Anime Families.

For this list, we'll be looking at the families in anime that for one reason or another are, to put it lightly, completely screwed up. Whether they somehow function within their insanity or are breaking apart at the seams, not even Dr Phil could fix these loons.

#10: Hyakkimaru’s Family

“Dororo” (2019) Talk about being dealt a cruel hand. In order to ensure that his province flourished, the merciless Lord Daigo was willing to make a literal deal with devils. The price for their peace turned out to be a simple one – they wanted his newborn son. Thanks to some heavenly intervention, they only ended up getting ninety percent of him – skin, limbs and senses included. If that’s not bad enough, Daigo’s desperation pushed his other son Tahomaru and his armies to attempt to kill Hyakkimaru, all in order to continue their charade.

#9: The Todoroki Family

“My Hero Academia” (2016-) We’ve all heard about heroes having tragic backstories, but this family takes that concept and twists it into something wholly ugly. Obsessed with his desire to overcome All Might as the world’s strongest hero, Endeavour put his loved ones through hell. Marrying and impregnating a woman purely for her Quirk, trying to mould his youngest into a weapon, even abusing his wife to the point where she had a mental breakdown and scarred her own child. You can see why Shoto might have a few issues with his bastard father.

#8: The Kiryuin Family

“Kill la Kill” (2013-14) Turns out mother doesn’t know best. As an agent for the Life Fibers, Ragyo’s entire existence was dedicated to prepping humanity’s convergence to clothing. This single-minded psychosis unfortunately extended to her own children, both of whom she saw as tools to aid the cause. She abandoned Ryuko when she was still a newborn, sent her personal assassin to kill her former husband, and while she raised Satsuki in relative comfort…she also had a terrible habit of assaulting her. No wonder her girls ended up trying to slice her to pieces. Teenage rebellion at its finest.

#7: The Ikari Family

“Evangelion” franchise (1995-) Lets face it, this is pretty much all Gendo’s fault. What with his shady dealings with SEELE, the strange connection between his wife and Rei and most importantly the way he isolated and emotionally crippled his son. And despite all of his flaws Shinji isn’t innocent either, he allowed Third Impact to happen and the less said about his time in the hospital with a comatose Asuka the better. And lets not forget Yui, who’s spirit lives on inside a giant purple mecha that loves to feast on the mysterious monstrosities known as angels.

#6: The Uchiha Clan

“Naruto” franchise (2002-) Duty, vengeance and tragedy are all par for the course with this clan, just look at Madara’s past as a fine example. With social and political pressure mounting against them, the Uchihas were days away from committing a coup that could lead to a civil war. In order to quell such a threat, Itachi was willing to kill all his loved ones, save for his little brother. In the hope that Sasuke would one day surpass him and become a hero in the Leaf Village’s eyes, Itachi pulled the wool over his sibling’s eyes, pushing him into a life of revenge. As the lies were exposed, it wasn’t long before Sasuke’s anger was redirected to those who had pushed his older brother to commit such atrocities.

#5: The Britannian Imperial Family

10 Times Anime Characters Were Completely Embarrassed (ft. Todd Haberkorn)

“Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion” (2006-08) All men are created equal, but some are more equal than others. That’s the creed this family live by, and you can bet they’re very happy to demonstrate it against the long-suffering Japanese masses. Whether it’s their innate racism, military conquests, the way they indulge in their lavish lifestyle while others starve, or everything that Charles vi Britannia does, it’s easy to see why Lelouch would be pushed so far as to declare war on his own family. The crap they pull with the Geass is disturbing enough, but you can be sure every member of this royal line has a list of misdeeds to their name a mile wide.

#4: The Matou Family

Also in:

Top 10 Anime Characters That Are Too Pure For This World (ft. Todd Haberkorn)

“Fate/Zero” (2011-12) Let’s not beat around the bush here, every family that ends up competing in the Holy Grail War has committed some-kind of atrocity. It’s just that Matou’s particular brand is always so much grosser than the rest. Most of these are perpetrated by Zouken Matou, whose desire to get the Holy Grail for himself is so intense that he put his own children and grandchildren through the most horrendous ordeals. He forced his own son to battle in the Fourth Holy Grail War, only to indulge in his failure and eventual death. There’s also the disgusting fact he placed Sakura in a room filled with Crest Worms that traumatised and violated her.

#3: The Zoldyck Family

“Hunter x Hunter” (2011-14) The family that slays together stays together, but what else do you expect from a group of master assassins? As gifted as they are wealthy, no contract is above this lot, even if it pits them against each other. Seriously, they wouldn’t hesitate to kill or torture each other if helps complete their mission. They have a reputation to protect after all. While the skills they teach their offspring are certainly indispensable, especially for an upcoming Hunter, their glee at when Killua shows killing intent towards them reveals just how warped their mentality truly is.

#2: The Reiss Family

Also in:

Top 10 Annoying Guys in Anime (ft. Todd Haberkorn)

“Attack on Titan” (2013-) Ruling over humanity from the shadows, taking lives and erasing minds, these royals would happily drive mankind closer to the brink so long as their survival and continued rule was assured. Through the Military Police they suppressed any potential usurper, through the Church they managed to indoctrinate those foolish enough to believe, and with the Titan serum, they had the potential to level any opposing Shifter. Still not sure why Rod thought Historia would be eager to carry on the family business after he gave the order to cut open her mother’s throat. Idiot.

#1: The Ushiromiya Family

Also in:

Top 10 WTF Transformation Scenes in Anime (ft. Todd Haberkorn)

“Umineko: When They Cry” (2009) You know the writing is on the wall when every member of this family is obscenely wealthy, thin-skinned and would happily sell out their significant other for some of that green. With even the most likeable of the bunch is still deadest on gaining a fortune from their ailing relative, you know the Ushiromiya’s are as metaphorically cutthroat as they come. Of course, when you delve deeper into the visual novel content, you see that beneath all that the greed is a whole cauldron of incest, violence and other disturbing acts that will soon have you cheering for Beatrice to smite the whole lot of them. Kinzo you absolute mad lad.
