You might want to draw up a will before you visit these locales. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the top 10 most dangerous places in anime. For this list, we’ll be looking at the anime locations that are the most dangerous, hazardous or deadly. We’re limiting our entries to specific settings, so you won’t see anything as broad as a planet on this list; although a couple of them may walk the line on that rule. Also we’re only looking at anime series here so no movies. Now let’s get this perilous tour started!

#10: Honnouji Academy “Kill La Kill” (2013-14)

Perched atop an artificial mountain island and surrounded by Honnou City, Honnouji Academy is ruled by a dictatorial student council who determine the students’ status and rank. Rankings are determined through Goku Uniforms, sentient clothing that gives the wearer superhuman abilities. These same life fibers are secretly manipulating those really in charge in order to take over Earth. Battle and bloodshed are a common occurrence at the Honnouji Academy and while not many people leave the place feet first, no one there is a stranger to pain.

#9: The Capital “Akame Ga Kill!” (2014)

Also in:

Top 10 Anime Ladies That Will Probably Kill You

The capital of “Akame Ga Kill!”’s unnamed Empire, this vast city is not the safest place to live, despite its big walls. The corrupt, self-serving government has exploited its citizens, using them as veritable slaves to create the city’s largest canal; which, though meant to increase the ease of trade, does little to improve the welfare of the populace, as poverty is widespread. Civil unrest is extensive, as is crime while political dissidents have been known to be publicly tortured and executed. Is it any wonder then that a revolutionary army has arisen to combat such a tyrannical, negligent regime?

#8: The National Research Institute on Human Evolution “Elfen Lied” (2004-05)

Also in:

Top 20 Anime That Are TOO Edgy

Clearly the Kakuzawa family, who funded operate this institute are not very genre-savvy. Founded ostensibly offshoots of the human race called Diclonii, who possess cartilaginous horns on their heads and of course, vectors. The goal is to create more Diclonii and ensure they overthrow humans and take their place as the dominant species on Earth. And while Chief Kakuzawa has orchestrated this insane plan, most of the people working there are unaware of it and are only fodder for the violent psychic outbursts of the very creatures they experiment on.

#7: Heavenly Host Academy “Corpse Party: Tortured Souls” (2013)

After a series of gruesome kidnappings and murders, Heavenly Host Academy was razed to the ground. Then some idiots had the brilliant idea of building another school directly where it once stood. So when a group of students perform an innocent enough charm on the grounds of the new school, they are transported into the spirit world where Heavenly Host Academy is home to some, shall we say, less than savory ghosts. These evil sprits will do a lot more than just knock stuff of shelves and frighten you so make sure you bring a strong stomach to this place.

#6: Outside the Walls “Attack on Titan” (2013-)

Also in:

Top 20 Attack on Titan Moments

When the world has been devastated by vicious titans, humanity finds itself on its last legs and the only way people survive is barricaded behind 50 meter walls. While the whole world is likely occupied by the titans, the area immediately outside the wall is the most hotly contended space. Seemingly bent on total annihilation of the human race, any breach in the wall causes the titans to swarm in by the dozens, and hundreds. The only people brave enough to venture outside are the elite soldiers of the Survery Corps, but even their life expectancy is pretty low.

#5: Tokyo-3 “Evangelion” franchise (1995-)

The main setting of most of the “Evangelion” series, Tokyo-3 is, as its name implies, the third incarnation of Japan’s capital, though Tokyo-2 still serves as the country’s actual first city. Tokyo-3 acts, as a veritable magnet for the monstrous angels that serve as the series ‘antagonists, making residents’ lives none too secure. Huge sections of the city are destroyed during the course of the show, and with every subsequent attack, the angels get closer and closer to whipping out human civilization.

#4: Deadman Wonderland “Deadman Wonderland” (2011)

A privately owned institution, Deadman Wonderland is not only a detention facility for normal criminals, but also for the titular “deadmen,” people who are able to control their blood in unusual and dangerous ways. All inmates are required to purchase or otherwise acquire ‘candy’, an edible substance that the prisoners literally cannot live without. The prison has it’s own internal economy and, because nothing comes cheap, they are often forced to take part in life or death carnivals that provide entertainment for the masses.

#3: Impel Down “One Piece” (1999-)

The World Government of “One Piece” decided to take the phrase “prison is hell” a little too literally. Each of Impel Down’s six, well, six and a half, levels is nicknamed for a hellish torture conducted within. Each level gets progressively worse the further down you go. Some highlights include a prison yard with bladed vegetation, ferocious guard beasts, a boiling pool of blood, an entire level kept at freezing temperatures, and summary executions by the poisonous warden. Even getting outside is no picnic, since the prison is a solid tower of submerged stone, located in a windless sea, surrounded by battleships. Yikes!

#2: Neo-Green Life Autonomous Region Hunter X Hunter (1999-2001, 2011-14)

Top 10 Anime Characters With Insane Hidden Powers

Often abbreviated to simply NGL, the Neo-Green Life Region was, until recently, a country that rejected modern technology. Their inability to quickly contact the outside world proved their undoing however, when the country becomes infested with Chimera Ants. These vicious creatures are incredibly dangerous and adaptable insects, whose offspring take on the characteristics of the animals they devour. As it turns out, they find humans especially delicious, leading to the rapid rise of intelligent and powerful chimera, which decimate the country’s population. Before we get to our number one pick, here a few honorable mentions: Gehenna Prison “Outlaw Star” (1998) The City/Megastructure “BLAME!” (2003) Witch Labyrinths “Puella Magi Madoka Magica” (2011) Roanapur “Black Lagoon” (2006-08, 2010-11) Shōnan Special Reform School “Rainbow: Nisha Rokubō no Shichinin” (2010)

#1: Hope’s Peak Academy “Danganronpa” Franchise (2013-)

When it comes to odds of survival, it doesn’t get much bleaker than one in a dozen or so. Trapped by the mysterious black-and-white animatronic bear Monokuma, the fifteen students of Hope’s Peak Academy are forced to try to murder one another, with the caveat that they can’t get caught, because if they do, they will be killed themselves. Because everyone is so close and in such a small space, murder is really hard to get away with, and the so called trials are almost unpredictable. Do you agree with our list?
