Top 10 Memes From Cartoons
#10: You Like Krabby Patties, Don’t You Squidward?
“SpongeBob SquarePants” (1999-)
Everyone has a guilty pleasure that they desperately try to keep secret. Admit it, you watch “My Little Pony” too. In this episode of “SpongeBob SquarePants,” Squidward attempts to conceal his love for Krabby Patties. When his co-worker catches him in the act, though, SpongeBob makes a hilarious expression that perfectly sums up the sentiment of learning a juicy secret. This image alone pretty much encompasses everything that needs to be said. Nobody does a better job at making this face than SpongeBob, expect for maybe President Obama or George Takei.
#9: Do You Want Ants?
“Archer” (2010-)
Even from its first episode, “Archer” was providing unforgettable quotes that were destined to take the Internet by storm. In this scene, Archer fails to get on Lana’s good side as she knocks his complementary box of doughnuts to the floor. In retaliation, the offended spy asks a smartass question that would be echoed by his mother Malory later on – and which would then ignite a million memes. Many people draw inspiration from this quote whenever they want to send out a warning on social media. Although these memes come off as sarcastic, that doesn’t mean there isn’t any truth to them.
#8: Dinkleberg!
“The Fairly OddParents” (2001-)
Whenever tragedy or a minor inconvenience strikes, it’s easy for us to blame somebody we despise, even when he or she had nothing to do with it. As far as Timmy Turner’s dad is concerned, all of the misery in his life stems from Dinkleberg. The Internet has also made a practice of blaming all their problems on the Turners’ next-door neighbor. MCR broke up? Dinkleberg! “Transformers Prime” was taken off the air? Dinkleberg! Lost connection on “Splatoon?” Dinkleberg! You get the idea. When something doesn’t go your way, keep calm and blame Dinkleberg.
#7: Pepperidge Farm Remembers
“Family Guy” (1999-2003; 2005-)
Believe it or not, this meme started as an actual ad for Pepperidge Farm, which went onto inspire one of the many random gags on “Family Guy.” “Pepperidge Farm Remembers” takes us back to a similar time when video games had a single ending, the Packers didn’t suck, and we didn’t use memes to reminisce. These memes are designed to evoke nostalgia in us all, making people long for the good ol’ days. Thinking about today’s topsy-turvy world can really grind our gears, as Peter Griffin would put it.
#6: He-Man Sings
“He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” (1983-85)
In the ‘80s, He-Man seemed like the most macho cartoon character on television. After a couple of animators from Slackcircus Studios made a video called “Fabulous Secret Powers,” though, it became impossible to ever take Prince Adam seriously again. Seeing He-Man sing the 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up” never fails to crack us up. In addition to being re-uploaded to YouTube countless times, this video also inspired an army of memes. Whenever somebody is experiencing unparalleled sexual bliss or the ultimate high, the image of an ecstatic He-Man against a glittery backdrop immediately comes to mind. What else can be said except, “HEYYEYAAEYAAAEYAEYAA!”
#5: Homer Backs Into Things
“The Simpsons” (1989-)
As it’s among the most quotable TV comedies of all time, “The Simpsons” has inspired one memorable meme after another. While Kent Brockman's “And I, For One, Welcome Our New Insect Overlords” meme came close to making this list, it couldn’t quite top the always welcome disappearing Homer. Derived from a scene that’s as funny as it is disturbing, this GIF has seen Homer back up into everything, froma litter of kittens to Michael Bolton. One of our favorite variations, though, is probably a four-paneled image expressing one’s desire to switch sports teams after an embarrassing loss. So much for having home team spirit.
#4: Aaaand It’s Gone
“South Park” (1997-)
In this Emmy-winning episode of “South Park,” Stan realizes that the economy makes no sense whatsoever. One minute you have a hundred dollars in the bank and the next thing you know it’s gone. This meme goes to show that time often flies by too fast. Whether we’re talking about money, food, or the girl of your dreams, nothing good ever seems to last. You’d better savor the moment while you can, or else “you’re gonna have a bad time”.
#3: ‘60s Spider-Man [aka Retro Spider-Man]
“Spider-Man” (1967-70)
Of all the characters in animation, few have appeared in as many memes as 60’s Spider-Man. Due to its low-quality animation, the old-school “Spider-Man” cartoon was full of bizarre images that most audiences overlooked at first glance. Throughout the years, though, people started to catch Spidey in compromising positions, completing these still shots with hysterical captions. Whether our web-slinging hero is masturbating behind a desk or getting the weirdest boner ever, there’s no shortage of great Spider-Man memes out there. Some have even taken over entire threads.
#2: It’s Over 9000!
“Dragon Ball Z” (1989-96)
Sometimes the most obscure quote can turn into an Internet phenomenon. On paper, “it’s over 9000” almost sounds like a throwaway line. Yet, it quickly became a favorite among “Dragon Ball Z” fans and eventually made its way into the mainstream with this epic meme. In the hit anime, Vegeta is enraged to discover that Goku’s power level is off the charts, amounting to his famous catchphrase. Since then “over 9000” has become a unit of measurement to describe a vast amount in popular culture. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. In this case, it’s worth at least 9000.
No honorable mentions this time around…
#1: Not Sure If [aka Futurama Fry]
“Futurama” (1999-2013)
“Futurama” has given us several classic memes that epitomize our desires to aimlessly throw our money away and leave this stupid planet forever. However, we were always certain that our number one spot would ultimately go to Fry’s iconic “Not Sure If…” expression. This still shot of Fry in deep contemplation is so simple, but has made leeway for numerous memes. Naturally, the meme is used to demonstrate somebody at a crossroads who is unable to tell the difference between two things. One thing is for sure, though: this is greatest cartoon meme ever.
