Even if the show ends someday, you can be sure that the people of Springfield will live on in meme form. Welcome to WatchMojo and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 10 Simpsons Memes. For this list, we’ll be focusing on memes taken from actual scenes in the show and ranking them based on popularity and general hilarity.

#10: Die / Diet “The Springfield Files”

In this classic episode, Homer seemingly has a close encounter with an alien, but that’s not the only startling sight he comes across. While sometimes presented in gif form, this is a meme that is rarely altered and it really doesn't need to be. The premise is simple. An already on-edge Homer is shocked by a billboard that he thinks is telling him to die. When he realizes it is actually telling him to diet, he is equally terrified. The sheer relatability for some considering dieting makes it easy to share with just a comment or even without.

#9: Everything’s Coming Up Milhouse “Mom and Pop Art”

Milhouse Van Houten is clearly a glass half-full kind of kid. This was never more apparent than when, in a Season 10 episode, Springfield was flooded. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, Bart’s blue-haired best friend focused on his joy that his new flood pants worked so well and kept him dry. It’s not surprising that this scene inspired memes celebrating life’s small victories and sometimes the larger ones like getting a new job. It has also made its way to t-shirts, nails, and even tattoos. You could say that everyone’s sharing out Milhouse!

#8: Lisa Simpson’s Presentation “Bye Bye Nerdy”

Also in:

Top 10 Best Lisa Simpson Storylines

Lisa may have been giving a presentation on bullying in a Season 12 episode, but she created the perfect blank canvass for people to photoshop their own presentation topic onto. This rather simple image macro with Lisa standing on stage in front of a screen has proved rather long lasting. Over the years, Lisa has presented topics like “Why Anime was a mistake,” “Why I don’t need therapy,” and “C4 is just angry Playdoh.” While some on Reddit have suggested using an image of Professor Frink instead, the Lisa version shows no signs of going away.

#7: Stupid Sexy Flanders “Little Big Mom”

Also in:

Top 10 Smart Shows with Stupid Humour

Meme creators seem fixated on remixing this scene from a Season 11 episode almost as much as Homer seems fixated on Ned Flanders’ revealing ski outfit. For Homer, this means a rather painful trip down the hill. For the meme creators, who mostly used YouTube at the start, this meant replacing Flanders in his skin-tight ski outfit and sometimes even replacing Homer with video game characters like Mega Man, Solid Snake from the “Metal Gear” series, and several characters from the “Overwatch” series. Ned Flanders isn’t the only character who seems too sexy to ignore.

#6: That’s a Paddlin’ “The PTA Disbands”

Top 10 Hilarious SNL Moments That Became Memes

Jasper may only be Abe Simpson’s retirement home buddy on the show, but in the meme world, he’s a star, for pretty much one moment. When random Springfield residents became teachers in a Season 6 episode, Jasper let his class know that pretty much anything could result in corporal punishment by listing off things that will result in a paddlin. Since then, people on the internet have used the image to list off things that will also result in said paddlin, including bad grammar, using motivational posters as memes, or even over-using the paddlin meme itself. Jasper would be proud.

#5: I, for One, Welcome Our New Insect Overlords “Deep Space Homer”

Kent Brockman may have jumped the gun when he declared in a Season 5 episode that the space shuttle Homer was on had been taken over by giant ants and he would be a willing servant when they took over the earth. However, the Springfield newscaster’s lack of perspective became the perfect meme to signify willing subservience to huge corporations, social media giants, and even fictional characters. The popularity of the meme even resonated in popular culture. Novelist Neil Gaiman paraphrased it in a tweet and made it about squirrels and Jeopardy champion Ken Jennings referenced it just before losing to a computer.

#4: Am I Out of Touch? “The Boy Who Knew Too Much”

When it comes to easily adaptable memes, this one that originated with Principal Skinner’s momentary introspection in a Season 5 episode takes the cake. While Skinner concludes that it is, in fact, the children who are wrong, meme creators have had him reason incorrectly that it is the gamers, the bloggers, the fans, and various others who are wrong, and therefore in the right. The underlying current remains that Skinner, or whatever person, company, or group he represents, is, in fact, of touch with modern times.

#3: Old Man Yells at Cloud “The Old Man and the Key”

Shortly after Clint Eastwood finished his argument with a chair representing President Obama on stage at the 2012 Republican National Convention, memes started popping up featuring the actor in a newspaper with the headline Old Man Yells at Chair. This was the latest version of a meme that originated with a Simpsons episode that had aired a decade earlier. In it, Abe Simpson, better known as Grandpa, was featured yelling at a cloud in the local Springfield newspaper. A generally unaltered version of the image was and still is used to denote foolish ranting.

#2: Disappearing Homer “Homer Loves Flanders”

Before ghosting was even a thing, Homer Simpson was an expert at it, as he proved in a Season 5 episode by backing into bushes to avoid embarrassment. This first spawned a series of gifs with Homer disappearing into different things as varied as a plate of French fries and adorable corgis. Later, a new version of the meme featured Homer disappearing into the bushes with one logo on his shirt and then re-emerging with a different one to denote changing allegiances to everything from sports teams to politicians. An unprecedented move in the meme world saw the Simpsons creators even referencing the meme in a season 30 episode. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions: It Will Happen to You “Homerpalooza”

Homer Hiding Back Fat “Husbands and Knives” Creepy Flanders “Homer Loves Flanders” Worst. Episode. Ever. “The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show” Bart Hits Homer with a Chair “A Milhouse Divided”

#1: Steamed Hams but… “22 Short Films About Springfield”

In the Season 7 episode “22 Short Films About Springfield,” a short segment is devoted to Principal Skinner trying to pass off Krusty Burgers as his own creation called steamed hams in a dinner with Superintendent Chalmers. While the scene itself is a quite funny, it’s the remixes, most of which showed up on YouTube, that really make it famous. Sometimes Skinner and Chalmers are replaced with video game characters, other times the animation style changes, and once it was the original writer sharing his first draft on Twitter. A supermarket in Australia even got in on the action with a funny sign in their ham section.
