For this list, we take a look at the men whose masculinity is at the forefront of their character and hold many of the stereotypical traits you might expect of the male of the species whether that be in their personality, physical appearance or occupation.

The Borderlands universe is no place for the meek and that is one adjective you wouldn’t dare use for this weapons manufacturer with a penchant for explosions. Looking like Randy Savage who just ate Tom Selleck, he is brash, loud and won’t ever tolerate a wimp. His own DLC is fittingly named the Campaign of Carnage and it plays out like Torgue’s reimagining of the main game: copious numbers of explosions, even more weapons and action that forces you to always be killing someone or something.

While a Captain Price did appear in the original call of duty, most people remember Price calmly smoking a cigar as a you helicopter prepares to drop you off on your first real mission of COD4. Just a few minutes after clearing the boat and securing the bomb without breaking a sweat, he saves you from falling out of a helicopter. It’s all in a days work for this warrior who happily dives head first into the most dangerous global conflicts with an unwavering moral compass and the occasional philosophical musing on the merits of war.

With possibly the gruffest voice in all of gaming, this legendary war hero has lost nearly everyone he has ever loved but rarely ever shows the slightest glimpse of emotion or weakness. He easily survived two brutal wars and is such a natural leader that he managed to repel the Locust horde from the prison where he was incarcerated. After all that it’s understandable he has a cold exterior but don’t let that fool you: he will do anything to protect his friends or squad mates.If he needs to protect them with his chainsaw gun, then so be it.

Ripped straight out of an 80s action movie, these two bros run around, often shirtless, killing aliens and saving the world time and time again. They approach every apocalyptic situation with bare machismo, eschewing traditional military tactics in favor of flips, jumps and a very heavy trigger finger. Together they create the ultimate fighting force known as Contra and neither could survive without the other in a beautifully violent symbiotic relationship. Their maverick approach isn’t for everybody but damn it they get results.

The dude punches boulders, do we need say any more? Granted his mostmanly moment is completely ridiculous but it states one thing: not even the earth can stop this special ops agent. As you might expect, women are often drawn to his rugged features and gradually increasing biceps but he is always focused on the job in hand – namely, zombies. That job is usually stopping the Umbrella Corporation and fighting a random assortment of terrible beasts, all of which he takes in his noticeably muscular stride.

If the presidential race was based on your resemblance to the archetypal ‘perfect’man then this muscle bound politician with a cleft chin would be a shoo in. Unfortunately his policies are more Donald Trump than Abraham Lincoln, limiting his political prowess but he takes the concept of being a man to a whole new level. When enhanced by nano machines his strength is taken to a superhuman level, becoming the epitome of his main belief: ‘might makes right’. He’s so manly that he believes anyone inferior needs to be exterminated, so be careful facing him in battle; He played College Football you know.

With great mustache comes great responsibility. Haggar embodies this phrase as the former professional wrestler became mayor of Metro City and took it upon himself to rid the place of it’s most troublesome criminals, the Mad Gear Gang. With his trusty lead pipe close at hand, he will gleefully dole out a flying piledriver or a signature double lariat. Rumor has it that he is inspired by ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage and that he got so sick of bursting out of his nicest shirts, he gave up wearing them altogether.

What better way to wind down after a long day of killing Greek gods than to have your way with a number of different women? That’s precisely what this demigod does as he seeks revenge for being tricked into slaughtering his wife and only daughter. From birth he has been groomed to become the ultimate Spartan warrior and, by extension, the ultimate male of the species. Most of the time he doesn’t even require any armor and chooses to fight in only a loincloth but with a six pack like that, you can’t blame him for showing off the goods.

His appeal to gamers may have waned in the last few years but his status as a vulgar womanizer is undeniable. The best way to describe him might be America on legs: confident, aggressively masculine, totally outspoken and, after first saving the earth from alien invasion, used his new found celebrity status to start a number of enterprises. Never without his trademark sunglasses and muscle-accentuating tank top, Duke’s swagger is an unavoidable facet of every single one of his over-the-top titles. While some may think of him as a relic of a bygone era, he was none the less a pillar of unapologetic masculinity in the videogame realm for years. Before we reveal our top pick, let’s take a look at some honorable mentions.
