Top 10 Greatest Digimon Moments Ever
#10: Beelzemon’s Fist of the Beast King
“Digimon Tamers” (2001-2002)
Is there any redemption arc in all of anime quite as fulfilling as Beelzemon’s? The guy started out as a brat Digimon, committed some truly heinous acts, and ended up saving the whole day with a Fist of the Beast King. He should know that skill better than anyone - he’s the one who killed Leomon in the first place. And, also why poor Jeri became the core of the D-Reaper. But, Beelzemon’s checkered past makes his eventual change of heart all the more impactful. He’s seen the error of his ways, and now, saving Jeri isn’t just penance. It’s his duty. Leomon clearly agrees.
#9: ShineGreymon Burst Mode
“Digimon Data Squad” (2006-07)
Things aren’t looking good for DATS. Kurata’s merged with Belphemon, Mega’s aren’t cutting it, and it seems like both worlds are about to go kablooie. Luckily, Marcus Damon wouldn’t know how to give up if he tried. Instead, he rallies his comrades with one, final speech. He’s determined to go down fighting, even if he has to throw the punches himself. It’s a truly rousing display of emotion. So rousing, in fact, that ShineGreymon digivolved into a whole new shade of red, commonly referred to as Burst Mode. Kurata thought he had an easy win, but he forgot Marcus Damon doesn’t play by anyone else’s rules.
#8: It's August 1st!
“Digimon Adventure” (1999-2000)
The biggest twist in “Digimon” doesn’t come from a villain reveal, shocking betrayal, or even a clutch digivolution. It’s when Tai looks at a calendar and realizes it’s August 1st. Despite his weeks of adventuring in the digital world, not a single day has passed on Earth. It’s a great moment in the context of “Adventure’s” narrative. But, the significance of August 1st has exploded far beyond that. Since it’s the day Tai and the others went to the Digital World, met their partners, and began their journey, it’s basically Digimon Day where fans are concerned. And it all started here with one, measly look at a calendar.
#7: Shoutmon x7 Superior Mode
“Digimon Fusion” (2010-12)
You don’t even need to watch this season to understand why this moment ranks among the greats. Since Mikey and company’s whole gimmick was fusion, it’s only natural they pushed the idea to its limit during their final battle. We’re talking about a combination of every single Digimon. Like, ever. Whether they’re on Earth or in the Digital World, they all come together to create a single, climactic scene that’s simply unforgettable. Watching every friend and foe from the series put aside their differences to stand together is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Although, we have to admit, Superior Mode’s giant sword is pretty cool, too.
#6: Enter The Dark Masters
“Digimon Adventure” (1999-2000)
Hot off the heels of the Digidestined’s greatest win yet, they return to the Digital World… and get seriously humbled. It’s not like they weren’t trying, either. The team digivolves to fight MetalSeadramon, and then again for Machinedramon, and even tries fending off Puppetmon at full strength. But, again and again, they just wrecked. Sure, no one expected the Dark Masters to go down easily. But, seeing even WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon go down in one shot proved that Piedmon and his clown crew were threats unlike anything the team had seen before. It set a terrifying precedent for “Adventure’s” final arc. Piedmon may be a clown, but the Dark Masters were no joke.
#5: Susanoomon
“Digimon Frontier” (2002-03)
From the very first episode, Takuya, Koji, and the rest of the gang were tasked with one important mission: save the spirits, and unite the Digital World. It took them the better part of “Frontier” to do it, but Susanoomon’s debut makes it all worth it. In a literal sense, he’s the culmination of everything the Digidestined had strived towards all season. Every spirit, every obstacle, and every sacrifice led to the creation of a Digimon like no other. Namely, one with the power to finally smack Lucemon upside the head. It doesn’t matter what the pieces are; added up, Susanoomon is more than enough to go down in history.
#4: Gallantmon
“Digimon Tamers” (2001-2002)
The best Digivolutions aren’t given, they’re earned. Digivolutions like Gallantmon. Overcome with rage from Leomon’s death, Takato forces Guilmon to go Mega. The partner follows orders, but the evolution is corrupted, creating a monster by the name of Megidramon. Takato learns his lesson the hard way, and nearly loses Guilmon for it. Only when the tamer understands his mistakes and vows to move forward can he achieve a new kind of Digivolution; Biomerge. Closer than ever before, Takato and Guilmon enter the fray as Gallantman. The Mega is a shining beacon of what Digimon and humans can achieve together. Beelzemon, watch out.
#3: Wizardmon's Death
“Digimon Adventure” (1999-2000)
Determined to snuff out the Eighth Child by any means necessary, the vile Myotismon didn’t just aim for Digimon. He aimed for Kari. He would’ve eliminated her right then and there if Wizardmon hadn’t jumped in the way. Despite his injuries, he didn’t even hesitate to trade his life for her. We shouldn’t be surprised, though. This is the same Digimon that cherished his friendship with Gatomon even when she couldn’t remember it. A pure heart to the very end, Wizardmon’s death is a hard but necessary reminder of what’s at stake. Thankfully, Angewomon ensures his sacrifice isn’t in vain.
#2: Goodbye
“Digimon Adventure” (1999-2000)
Every adventure needs an ending. Some come sooner than others, but they all sting just the same. Especially when you’re saying goodbye to life-long friends. “Digimon” understood the assignment, making sure each farewell hit just the right notes. Matt plays his harmonica, Tentomon makes Izzy promise to never stop being curious, and Palmon - Well, Palmon doesn’t want to say goodbye at all! By the time the kids are all aboard their last-stop train back to the human world, you’d better have a box of tissues in hand. While this isn’t “Digimon’s” ending, it is the end of a once-in-a-life-time adventure, and we won’t be forgetting it any time soon.
#1: Omnimon
“Digimon Adventure: Our War Game!” (2000)
Across all the seasons, games, and trading cards, there’s one Digivolution that unequivocally reigns supreme - and not just because of his Supreme Cannon. You know him, you love him, it’s obviously Omnimon. There’s really no way to top an entrance like this. The world’s seconds away from annihilation, causing WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon to take on the hopes of the masses and digivolve together. We get chills just talking about it! Omnimon’s grand debut feels like the payoff to everything “Digimon’s” ever stood for. He’s a literal fusion of Matt, Tai, hopes, dreams, epic fights - everything! There’s no better way to prove that “Digimon” will never stop digivolving.
