#10: Art Kills Allie

“Terrifier 2” (2022)

Technically most of the “Terrifier” franchise takes place on Halloween night, but we have to pick one scene that defines the series, it’s when Art murders Allie. In one of the most shocking and stomach-turning scenes in modern horror, Art the Clown brutally murders the poor woman in her own bedroom and has way too much fun while doing so. With her house decked out for the holiday, the decorations and orange wallpaper make the carnage feel even more twisted. The scene is outrageous by design, but the reaction was still swift and irate, with many people calling it out for its excessive violence. Hey, who said Halloween had to be in good taste?

#9: The Release of the Crematorium Demon

“Night of the Demons” (1988)

What’s Halloween without a little séance? And what’s a séance without unleashing a few demons? In the aptly-named “Night of the Demons,” a group of teenagers enter an abandoned funeral parlor to party on Halloween night - because that’s always a great idea. But when they accidentally release a demonic force from the crematorium, the fun quickly turns infernal - and deadly. The flickering candles, the dark, the costumes, and the pounding soundtrack create a perfectly unholy Halloween vibe. It’s the ultimate “don’t mess with the supernatural on Halloween” moment, and it is gloriously over the top.

#8: The Hand Ruins the Dance

“Idle Hands” (1999)

Despite bombing upon release, “Idle Hands” is now considered a cult classic thanks to a strong concept and the star power of young A-listers like Seth Green and Jessica Alba. Stoner teen Anton Tobias gets the shock of his life when his hand becomes possessed and begins killing people. And in the thrilling climax of the film, Anton’s hand goes on a rampage at a Halloween dance, scalping the band’s singer on stage and causing a huge panic. It’s the ultimate B-movie shenanigans - creepy and gory, but also absolutely bonkers. It captures the true spirit of Halloween, wild fun and all.

#7: The Activation of the Masks

“Halloween III: Season of the Witch” (1982)

In the grossly underrated “Halloween III,” the real terror isn’t Michael Myers - it’s a number of creepy masks. On Halloween night, an untold number of kids across America tune in to a bizarre TV commercial as part of the Silver Shamrock company’s dastardly plan. And this plan unleashes one of the darkest endings in movie history. When the broadcast begins, the masks activate, unleashing bugs, snakes, and painful death on unsuspecting trick-or-treaters. The scene is both surreal and horrifying, as the cheerful holiday soundtrack blares over scenes of soon-to-be-dead children. If nothing else, “Halloween III” had guts and originality to spare.

#6: The Bellows House

“Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” (2019)

Halloween night in a small town becomes the perfect setup for a spine-tingling adaptation of these horrifying books that live rent free in the head of every ‘90s child. In “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” a group of young troublemakers sneaks into the supposedly-haunted Bellows house after playing a prank in order to seek refuge. There, they find an old storybook written by Sarah Bellows and seemingly interact with a ghost after it lets them out of a locked room. The house is creaky, the pumpkins are glowing, and the air feels thick with Halloween magic. It’s the perfect opening for this type of film - equal parts nightmarish and nostalgic for those old Halloween nights of old.

#5: Ginger Transforms

“Ginger Snaps” (2000)

Werewolves and Halloween. Name a better combo. In the holiday classic “Ginger Snaps,” the titular Ginger starts to turn at the Halloween Greenhouse Bash, causing Sam to knock her out and take her home. And it’s here where Ginger fully embraces her monstrous side. The teen turns into a werewolf inside the van and quickly turns the night of fun into a bloody string of violence. You could say that Ginger…snaps. Her feral transformation is horrific, as she mauls and then murders Sam and then tries killing her own sister before getting fatally stabbed. It’s supernatural horror as metaphor for teenage rebellion, and it is glorious.

#4: The Talk Show Disaster

“Late Night with the Devil” (2023)

Halloween night, 1977: live TV, a possessed guest, and a show that literally turns to Hell. In “Late Night with the Devil,” the fictional late-night host Jack Delroy tries to boost ratings with a spooky Halloween special, only for the demonic presence on set to turn the broadcast into a waking nightmare. Few movies have nailed the Halloween aesthetic quite like this one, blending cheesy Halloween stage decor and cute graphics with moments of genuine terror. That grainy, off-color ‘70s aesthetic only adds to the fun. It’s Hell on Earth for the host and his audience, but for us, it is an insane amount of fun.

#3: The Halloween Party

“Donnie Darko” (2001)

While not explicitly a horror film, we’d be hard-pressed to find someone who didn’t find “Donnie Darko” scary. Come on, that bunny is the stuff of nightmares. Set to the hauntingly perfect “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” the Halloween party scene perfectly captures the eerie beauty of the holiday. Donnie, dressed as a skeleton, is in a house full of teenagers partying like it’s the end of the world - because, in a way, it is. The masks, the costumes, and the surreal vibe mirror Donnie’s unraveling reality as the film builds toward its mind-bending and time-warping climax. It’s not just a Halloween party. It’s the last calm before the cosmic chaos begins.

#2: Sam Is Unmasked by Kreeg

“Trick ‘r Treat” (2007)

Few Halloween scenes are more iconic than the showdown between old Mr. Kreeg and Sam, the mysterious trick-or-treater enforcing the rules of Halloween. When Kreeg pulls off Sam’s iconic burlap mask and reveals a nightmarish, pumpkin-headed creature underneath, it’s the perfect mix of shock and goofy Halloween charm. And the accompanying visuals, oh man. Surrounded by candy wrappers, glowing pumpkins, and autumn leaves, the scene wonderfully captures the visual splendor of the holiday. There’s a reason this movie has become an annual watch for so many over the years. You break the rules of Halloween? You pay the price.

#1: Michael’s Rampage

“Halloween” (1978)

It’s simply not Halloween until we watch Michael Myers walking through the dark, residential streets of Haddonfield and murdering teenagers. It sounds weird when we say it like that. John Carpenter’s masterpiece gave us “the night he came home,” and it’s still the gold standard for Halloween night terror. On October 31st, masked killer Michael Myers stalks the quiet suburb both day and night, turning the best night of the year into an unimaginable bloodbath. The glowing jack o’ lanterns, the trick-or-treaters having fun in the distance, and the eerie stillness of the neighborhood all make his climactic rampage unforgettable. It’s the defining Halloween horror sequence, even all these years later.
