These The Crown outfits are fit for… well, a queen.

Now, this is a family that knows how to dress to impress. Welcome to MsMojo and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 Outfits from The Crown.

For this list, we’ll be reviewing some of the most beautiful and significant outfits from the historical drama series’ first three seasons. We’ll be basing our picks on the outfit’s aesthetic, its significance to the story and/or how closely it resembles its real-life counterpart.

#10: The Queen Visits Ghana

Comparing the 3 Performances of Queen Elizabeth II on The Crown

In the early days of the series, the young Queen must adjust to her new role as the head of the Royal family. At first, she loses her way as everyone tries to tell her who she must be and her lack of confidence reflects in her style. However, when she visits Ghana, in season two, we can see her ever-growing confidence as she takes to the dance floor with Prime Minister Kwame Nkrumah. Her dress is simple yet elegant and marks a moment when she throws caution to the wind and finally discovers her own voice again.

#9: Philip’s Uniform

We could hardly create a list of iconic looks from “The Crown” without including Prince Philip’s official getup. Royal life isn’t always so easy for The Queen’s husband but when duty calls, so does this uniform and, boy does he look handsome. The attention to detail is especially noteworthy - and if you look at the photos side by side, you’ll be surprised at how much commitment has gone into making this look authentic. Like many aspects of the show, there’s always someone on board to check the accuracy, even down to the most minuscule details.

#8: The Blue Summer Dress from the Queen’s Commonwealth Tour

Top 10 The Crown Episodes to Rewatch

Princess Elizabeth looks magnificent in her blue summer dress as she embarks on her first solo tour of the Commonwealth. It probably isn’t the outfit we would have chosen for this occasion, but nothing is coincidental on this show. The costume designers wanted a look that would symbolize the relationship between the colonized nationals and the colonial power her position represents. The gown exhibits a more naive version of Elizabeth while showing her gentle-mannered personality. Even her accessories are deliberately made to slightly mismatch to show a lack of experience and confidence.

#7: Tony Photographs Margaret

Tony Soprano VS Walter White

While Princess Margaret always looks like a cover girl, her sense of style often illustrates her love of the limelight mixed with disdain for Royal protocol. We love her fuzzy coat and elegant teal engagement dress but it's an off-the-shoulder cut that really marks her signature look. When she meets photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones, she causes quite the scandal when he convinces her to take the bare shoulder look a step further. It’s quite a contrast from the earlier birthday photo, which really highlights her inner conflicts between who she is and who she must be.

#6: Prince Charles’ Investiture in 1969

Top 10 Fresh Prince Outfits We WANT

Prince Charles’ Investiture marks one of the best real-life replica moments of series three. We’re stunned with the accuracy from the Queen’s headwear down to her umbrella, as well as the bold colored outfits worn by the other Royal women. We love how Princess Anne embraces the old with the new by choosing a mini length outfit while adhering to the color code. Interestingly, bold ensembles were a trick the Royals used to make sure they could be seen from afar in large crowds - not that you’d think they’d need much help with that.

#5: Margaret’s Ball Gown

Margaret’s daring fashion sense is often used to show the elements of her personality otherwise suppressed by her status. We love the gorgeous soft pink gown she wears when she starts her secret affair with Peter Townsend as we get a glimpse into the bold, romantic side that she must hide from the world. We also adore her satin ballgown with its sparkly bodice, accessorized with a fur coat, as it really highlights her personality and makes quite the dramatic statement. Margaret was made for life under the spotlight and her outfit choices prove just that.

#4: The Queen Goes to the Ballet

As Elizabeth gets closer to her coronation, she starts to embrace a more regal look. During a trip to the ballet, the soon-to-be Queen dons a shimmering blue gown with a white fur stole and accessories suitable for well, a Queen. As well as looking beautiful as she heads into the theater, this seems to be a turning point for the young Royal. Earlier in the episode, we see her practicing walking with the crown on her head so this look could be her way of embracing who she’s about to become.

#3: The Queen Meets Jackie Onassis

Top 10 The Crown Moments That Didn't Actually Happen

When the Queen meets the First Lady of America - and fashion - she decides she needs a new look. Both women wear blue, although their dresses give off very different vibes. Compared to Jackie O’s sleek, modern look, Elizabeth’s overly decorated outfit is an impressive homage to its real-life counterpart but, resonates more with 1950s fashion. According to costume designer, Jane Petrie, Elizabeth uses her look to put on a show and assert her power, while Mrs. Kennedy’s style is more relaxed. It’s an impressive way to show the old and the new as well as tradition versus modernity.

#2: Princess Elizabeth’s Wedding Dress

The Crown Season 4 Princess Diana Fashion: Fact or Fiction

While we could have chosen Princess Margaret’s stunning and iconic wedding dress, there is just so much about Princess Elizabeth’s that we find fascinating. The original dress was designed by Norman Hartnell and took several months to make. It’s quite traditional in its style, featuring a high neckline, long sleeves, and a 13 foot train. When The Crown’s costume design team replicated this gorgeous gown, they spent several weeks recreating the look to the cost of approximately $38,000. We still get excited over a Royal wedding dress and it seems that will never change.

Before we unveil our top pick here are some honorable mentions.

While many of the outfits on our list are creations made specifically for the show, this one is an exception. A replica had recently been made for an exhibition and fortunately it was a perfect fit for Claire Foy. Like her wedding dress, the coronation garment was designed by Norman Hartnell and featured embroidered emblems of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. The Queen’s coronation would be a televised first so having the authentic look was vital to the show. The dress also marks Elizabeth pairing tradition with modernity and looking ever so glamorous while doing so.
