Seasons three through five of “The Crown” showed a complex relationship between Queen Elizabeth and her eldest son, Prince Charles. Reports indicate that their bond was distant during Charles’ upbringing given royal obligations, which meant he was often left in the care of nannies. As the years passed, however, mother and son developed shared interests and mutual respect, bridging some of the gap. Still, season five, in particular, faced criticism for depicting the Prince’s attempts to challenge the Crown. Now, the big question is: how will their relationship play out in the final season? It will be interesting to see if the show will stick to its storyline or take a new turn based on feedback and unfolding real-world situations.

#9: Season Six: A Key Element of the Initial Blueprint

When “The Crown” was first pitched to Netflix, it was meant to be a six-season saga spanning six decades. However, during the planning of the fifth season, creator Peter Morgan decided to end the story there, feeling that it had come to a perfect close. He would later pivot back to the original idea, though, after realizing there were more layers to explore and that the stories deserved more time. He emphasized that the final season wouldn’t reach the present day but would offer a more in-depth exploration of the same period. The last season has been split into two, with the first four episodes premiering on November 16th, 2023, and the remaining episodes joining them on December 14th.

“The Crown” brilliantly captures Queen Elizabeth's reign in distinct eras across each two-season arc. Claire Foy ushered us into the ‘50s and early ‘60s, followed by Olivia Colman, leading us into the late ‘70s. Now, Imelda Staunton will take us into the mid-aughts. Other returning cast members include Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, Dominic West as Prince Charles, Elizabeth Debicki as Diana, and Olivia Williams as Camilla Parker Bowles. We’re also set to see some new faces, like the actors playing Prince William and Prince Harry. Either way, this season, as per usual, promises a captivating portrayal of pivotal events.

In the season five finale, Labour leader Tony Blair shattered the Conservative Party’s 18-year grip on no.10, ushering in the new millennium. Having previously explored British-Irish tensions, the series will likely delve into Blair’s pivotal role in ending the Troubles in Northern Ireland through the Good Friday Agreement. Blair introduced the minimum wage and made significant global moves, sending troops to Afghanistan after the 9/11 attacks and controversially joining the U.S. in the 2003 Iraq invasion. He also led the nation during the tragic 2005 7/7 London attacks. Despite his popularity, charisma, and achievements, his leadership is marred by divisive decisions, which will undoubtedly be explored this season.

In addition to new leadership, season five showcased significant changes for the country and the Royal family. The Queen grapples with the challenge of bringing the monarchy into the modern age. Meanwhile, Prince Philip struggles with his royal duties, aging, and a troubled marriage. Prince Charles continues to fight for his voice within the institution and navigates a controversial relationship with Camilla Parker-Bowles after his divorce from Diana. Diana continues her advocacy work and also finds new love. The season concludes with her preparing for a trip to St. Tropez with Dodi Al-Fayed. It marks a bittersweet moment as she embraces a new chapter that the audience already knows will tragically be cut short.

As we mentioned before, the final season unfolds in two acts. The initial four episodes, starting in 1997, delve into the events around Diana’s passing. Then, the next six episodes will carry us to the mid-aughts, offering an introspective glimpse into the Queen’s enduring reign. Anticipated events include Prince Charles and Camilla’s wedding, Prince William and Kate Middleton’s early relationship, the Golden Jubilee, and the loss of Princess Margaret and the Queen Mother. This season will blend personal royal stories with global events from our recent past, capturing moments from living memory. With the media bridging the gap between us and the royals, this could be the most thought-provoking and contentious season yet.

Ahead of the final season, Netflix teased a pivotal event: Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles’ 2005 wedding. Due to the Church of England’s stance on divorce, the Queen skipped the ceremony but attended the reception. Public opinion varied, with some supporting the union while others objected to Camilla becoming Queen since she was “the other woman” during his marriage to Diana. In his book “Spare”, Prince Harry revealed that he “begged” his father not to go through with the wedding. However, during her 2022 Platinum Jubilee, the Queen made it known that she wanted Camilla to be Queen Consort to King Charles. Given this added context, we’re intrigued to see how the show tackles this event.

#3: A New Royal Romance: The William & Kate Story

In this season’s big royal romance, Prince William, played by Ed McVey, embarks on what he hopes will be a typical uni experience at the University of St Andrews. His path will cross with an Art History student, Kate Middleton, played by Meg Bellamy. There is, of course, the famous fashion show story, where William is said to have been taken with Kate after she modeled in a sheer, lace dress. Despite this, the larger story goes that they were friends for a while before a natural romance developed. In any case, we look forward to seeing how this love story unfolds on the screen. Who doesn’t love a modern royal romance?

#2: It Will Cover Diana’s Tragic Death

In part one, we’ll witness Diana’s final days, the horrible accident that claimed her and Dodi Al-Fayed’s lives, and its aftermath. Unsurprisingly, the show’s creators and everyone involved reportedly faced immense pressure to handle this sensitive topic carefully. While the actual car crash won’t be shown, the idea of even recreating the accident scene has been hotly debated. There are also rumors that Diana could appear as a ghost in later episodes, which has also raised a few eyebrows. This dark moment from royal history carries immense weight and many still have strong emotions about it today. Fans will be watching closely to see if the show handles this delicate topic respectfully.

#1: A Tribute to the Queen

When news of the Queen’s passing in September 2022 broke, the show halted filming its final season to pay respects. The creators have apparently planned a tribute to the central figure of the series. Claire Foy and Olivia Colman are set to make appearances, likely through flashbacks. Meanwhile, newcomer Viola Prettejohn will depict a young Princess Elizabeth. Although we don’t yet know exactly how this will play out, we imagine it will likely offer viewers a chance to reflect on the Queen’s milestones and enduring influences. We’re sure it will be a heartfelt homage honoring the late monarch’s profound impact on history by blending past and present to highlight Queen Elizabeth II’s lasting legacy.
