VOICE OVER: Ashley Bowman WRITTEN BY: Garrett Alden
They don't come sharper than this. Join Ashley as he counts down the best Steel-Type Pokemon, including the likes of "Scizor", "Steelix", "Lucario", and more!

#10: Mawile

Possibly one of the most bizarre Pokémon designs ever created, Mawile is a petite yellow, humanoid creature, whose long black “hair” is actually a huge mouth. Although originally a pure Steel type, Mawile changed to the slightly more appropriate Steel/Fairy dual type upon the release of the “Sun and Moon” games, which is a great combination for defense. It also gained the ability to Mega evolve, gaining not only a toothier design, but an ability that doubles its strength, making it truly formidable indeed! A little creepy, a little cute, and plenty powerful, Mawile is a great Pokémon.

#9: Bisharp

This Pokémon is really cutting edge. Resembling some kind of samurai bug or maybe a super sentai character, Bisharp is the evolved form of Pawniard, whom the Pokédex claims often leads packs of them in the wild. Although it's Dark/Steel typing makes it especially vulnerable to Fighting types, Bisharp is a tough fighter in its own right, possessing great attack and defense that ensure its bladed body is used to its fullest. Featuring a slick design, as well as a unique typing, Bisharp will look sharp in anyone’s party.

#8: Steelix

One of the first Steel type Pokemon to appear, Steelix evolves from Onix when traded with a Metal Coat. Trading in Onix’s Rock Type for Steel, Steelix retains its Ground type, as well as its predecessor’s blocky, snake-like body, but becomes even more of a tank, boasting incredible defense. Steelix also has the ability to mega evolve, which turns its already impressive defense up to 11, while also boosting its attack strength and turning its spikes into crystals. As one of the original Steel-types, Steelix helped define what the type should be.

#7: Aggron

What if Godzilla cosplayed as the Shredder? The result would probably look very similar to Aggron! The final evolution of Aron, Aggron is a Rock/Steel type, combining the two most powerfully defensive types into one beastly wall of a Pokémon. As if that wasn’t impressive enough, Aggron can mega evolve, increasing its defenses even further, while also gaining an ability that reduces the effectiveness of attacks it’s weak to. Basically, if you need a Pokemon to take some hits, and dish out some damage, Aggron’s your ‘mon!

#6: Excadrill

It’s a drill! It’s a mole! No, it’s a Pokémon! Excadrill, to be precise. Resembling a large mole with razor sharp drill bits instead of claws and attached to its head, Excadrill is, appropriately, a Ground/Steel type. Unlike most Steel types, Excadrill is more offensively focused and is faster than average too. Unfortunately, the trade off its that its defenses are fairly weak. But, with powerful Ground type moves and its powerful claws, Excadrill hits hard and fast enough that taking a hit isn’t that big a problem, particularly since one of its abilities doubles its speed in sandstorms.

#5: Skarmory

The armor bird Pokémon, Skarmory is fittingly a Steel/Flying type. One more of the original Steel types, Skarmory is another great example of the type’s biggest selling points, boosting high defense, as well as being speedier than most other Steel types. It also has the highest defense out of any Flying Pokémon. Thanks to its fierce, yet distinctive look and great utility as a veritable “sky armory,” this steely avian has had a popularity that has proven as durable as its plumage. This is one bird we wouldn’t want perching on our shoulder though.

#4: Scizor

Last of the OG Steel types, Scizor is the evolved form of Scyther. Changing into a Bug/Steel type, Scizor does lose the ability to fly (and becomes seriously weak to fire), but it gains some seriously impressive attack and defensive power, and a cool metallic red design. And if you want to see it become even more of a mechanical marvel, you can mega evolve it, which will boost its strong stats even higher and give it the ability to boost the force of its lower powered moves. And plus, it’s just really cool, okay?

#3: Aegislash

It’s a freaking ghost sword! How awesome is that?! A Steel/Ghost type, Aegislash is the final form of Honedge. Basically a floating sword with a shield that it holds with its tassel arms, Aegislash is particularly interesting because of its ability, stance change, which alters its attack and defense depending on which stance it has, with its sword form featuring high attack and special attack, and it's shield form giving it high defense and special defense. It can switch between them with its signature move, King’s Shield, which protects it from almost all damage. Aegislash may be tricky to use and to fight against, but that’s part of what makes it so fantastic.

#2: Metagross

Given that it looks like an angry cross between a robot, a tank, and a spider, you’d think Metagross would be Steel and a type known for physical power, but nope – it’s a Steel and Psychic type! But this Pokémon’s monstrous strength is no joke, boasting some formidable power all around. As if it wasn’t overpowered enough, Metagross gets a mega evolution that sets its floating and freeing all four of its menacing limbs for attack. Metagross’ basic, but unique appearance and unquestionable power have made it a longtime favorite among Pokémon trainers everywhere. Before we get to our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions: Corviknight A Bird in Shining (Dark) Armor Magnezone How Does This UFO-Looking Pokémon Fly? Magnets. Bronzong The Bell Tolls For Bronzong Genesect This Legendary Pokémon is One Big Bad Beetle Borg!

#1: Lucario

We’re not sure why Lucario is a Steel type. It certainly looks like a Fighting type, which is the other half of its typing, but Steel? Maybe it’s how hard it hits, because it’s certainly a powerhouse. This bipedal blue canine is a contender for not only the best Steel type, but also one of the greatest Pokémon in general, being one of the few that have come close to Pikachu’s popularity, starring in movies and appearing in games like “Super Smash Bros.” And with how strong, cool, and almost cuddly it is, it’s no wonder why everyone loves Lucario.
