Top 10 Iron Man Scenes in the MCU Honest question: What other superhero can pose inside a giant donut and still look badass? Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 Iron Man Scenes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For this list, we’re paying tribute to the MCU’s incarnation of Tony Stark and what we believe to be some of his most entertaining, tragic, and heroic scenes throughout his decade-long career -both IN and OUT of the Iron Man suit. Though final warning: If you haven’t seen Endgame yet, there will be MASSIVE spoilers.

#10: “What are you without the suit?”

“The Avengers” (2012) Hot damn Robert Downy Jr. knows how to drop epic quips and comebacks. Oh ohh here’s #9: What’s more awesome is that this line was improvised by Downy. Let’s keep it going: #8 Damn he’s good! And you know; all of these are just from “The Avengers”, we could just fill this list with epic quotes from him and we’d have 5 more Top 10 lists to fill. So let’s bundle all these together and say #10: All His Epic One Liners. Though we are going to save one for it’s own entry … you’ll see why.

#9: Iron Man and War Machine

“Iron Man 2” (2010) Colonel James “Rhodey” Rhodes has been a major supporting character and Tony’s best friend since the very beginning of the MCU. However, in “Iron Man 2”, their friendship became strained when Rhodey had to take one of Tony’s suits to subdue the reckless, drunken billionaire. Thankfully, when Whiplash attacks with an army of drones –and a suit of his own, the two made amends and banded together to take on an army of rogue robots and a deranged villain –giving us our first cinematic look at the teamwork between Iron Man and the newly-crowned War Machine. While their teamwork still has a few kinks to resolve at this stage, Tony is lucky to have a friend and wingman like Rhodey.

#8: The Raptor Dogfight

“Iron Man” (2008) While flying home, Iron Man catches the attention of the United States Air Force –and his best friend, Rhodey. (at this point played by Terrence Howard) Unsure of what this bogey is, the military send two Raptor Jets to blow Tony out of the sky, but he’s too nimble for them. One of the planes goes down, but Tony manages to save the pilot; in the middle of the dogfight, Rhodey finds out that Tony is Iron Man –but he helps to cover it up. Tony DID want his buddy to be a part of his project… unfortunately, Rhodey has no choice since –as he just witnessed- the military is no match for Iron Man.

#7: Iron Man vs. Thanos

“Avengers: Infinity War” (2018) For six years, Tony has been haunted by visions of everyone and everything he loves being eradicated. Unfortunately, that vision is realized when he and a few other Avengers find themselves on Titan facing Thanos. After a few over the top bounts, Tony eventually ends up facing the Mad Titan one-on-one, showing off the abilities of his top of the line nanosuit. But it’s not enough and he nearly dies at Thanos’ hand. Dr. Strange surrenders the Time Stone to spare Tony’s life, which allows Thanos to decimate half the universe. Of course we know that since Strange can see the future, so he was fully aware that Tony had a much bigger role to play. Even if Stark couldn’t accept that.

#6: Saving New York

“The Avengers” (2012) During the Chitauri invasion in New York, a nuke that can wipe out all of Manhattan has been launched, but Iron Man intercepts it and flies it through the Chitarui portal. He knows he may not make it back alive, but he doesn’t care; he soars up and uses the missile to destroy the alien ship, and then falls unconsciously back to earth knowing that he helped save the world. Thankfully, he makes it out alive… but not unscathed as his near-death experience would continue to haunt him in the next movie. But for now at least he gets to experience what Shawarma tastes like.

#5: Hulkbuster Beatdown

“Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015) Under Ultron’s orders, Scarlet Witch manipulates Bruce Banner into becoming The Hulk and goes on a rampage in Johannesburg. Tony quickly gears up in the massive Hulkbuster armor to try and subdue the berserk behemoth without ANY human casualties. Unfortunately the collateral damage these two brawling titans cause is enormous, as they plow through buildings in the mother of all wrestling matches. The smackdown ends when Tony is finally able to knock the Hulk out –unfortunately, their duel unintentionally damaged the Avengers’ public image for the moment. Despite this, it’s comforting to know that Tony has a suit for ANY situation – who knows when you need to beat up your friend to ease their breathtaking anger management issues.

#4: Forging a Legend

“Iron Man” (2008) While traveling through Afghanistan, Tony Stark ends up being abducted by a group of terrorists. They order him and another captive named Yinsen to build them a missile; but instead, the two build Tony’s Arc Reactor and a suit of armor to help them escape … IN A FREAKING CAVE! Unfortunately, Yinsen does not make it out alive –but he does offer Tony one crucial piece of advice. We had to include this one; it’s the scene that laid the foundation not only for Tony’s career as Iron Man but the whole MCU in general. From then on, Tony would create even better suits, and he’d start by preventing the terrorists that started all this from hurting anybody else with his own weaponry.

#3: Iron Man vs. Captain America & Winter Soldier

Superhero Origins: Iron Man (Redux)

“Captain America: Civil War” (2016) Ever since they met, Tony and Steve have had a heated on-again-off-again rivalry as co-leaders of the Avengers. That contention leads to Civil War, fracturing the team in two. But once Tony learns that Steve’s friend Bucky assassinated his parents. Tony lashes out at both Steve and Bucky in one last dramatic, brutal brawl. Nothing Captain America and Iron Man have done together matters anymore – Tony’s trust in Steve is shattered and he isn’t holding back or making wisecracks anymore… he is out for blood! Cap manages to disable Tony’s suit, but the damage is done – the Avengers are no more, and nothing short of a Mad Titans’ upbringing can mend old wounds and bring both leaders back together.

#2: “I Am Iron Man”

“Iron Man” (2008) Remember how we said we’re saving the best quip for it’s own entry? Well here it is. Traditionally; Superhero stories have said heroes hiding their identity. A regular man when off duty, and superhero persona when duty calls. In the final scene of the very first MCU film, despite being advised to stick to the cards, Stark pretty much goes “F*** that trope” with these 4 words... Cue Black Sabbath! Tony could’ve just stuck with the cover story about Iron Man being some bodyguard in a suit, but he chose to accept that this is his destiny and who he really is – Not your traditional superhero. Before we unveil our number one pick, here are a few invincible honorable mentions. “Not the Worst Thing You’ve Caught Me Doing” “Iron Man” (2008) Mentoring Spider-Man “Spider-Man Homecoming” (2017) The Plane Rescue “Iron Man 3” (2013) Mark V Suitup “Iron Man 2” (2010) Mark II Test Run “Iron Man” (2008)

“Avengers: Endgame” (2019) After 11 years of build-up, it all comes down to this – almost every major Marvel hero in the MCU vs. Thanos and his entire army. Thanos is ready to use the Infinity Stones again…. But Tony pulls a switcheroo and harnesses their power to wipe out the Mad Titan and his army. Tragically, the Stones’ power mortally wound Tony, and he passes on surrounded by his friends and loved ones. Over the last decade, we have seen Mr. Stark evolve from a cocky playboy technician into a protective, self-sacrificial hero willing to do anything for those he cares about and the entire universe –even if it means that the MCU must move forward without the man that started it all.
