Top 10 Funniest Movie Road Trips

Top 10 Funniest Movie Road Trips
VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton
This is one of Hollywood's greatest film set-ups. A fodder for all kinds of hysterical antics, film road trips have allowed their central characters to come experience troubles and meet insane personalities while literally trying to make it to their goal. These travels have included a trip to a burger joint in "Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle", getting home for the holidays in "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" and making it to a theme-park in "National Lampoon's Vacation." Join http://www.WatchMojo.com as we count down our pick for the top 10 funniest movie road trips.

#10 – Trek To Austin: “Roadtrip” (2000)

Kicking off our list is one aptly titled raunchy college flick. The reason for this road trip? A guy’s gotta race to Texas to stop his girlfriend from watching a sex tape of him and another woman. His dutiful, freak/loser/pervert buddies go along for the ride, so obviously hilarity ensues. Memorable moments include the freak losing his virginity, the old man getting too excited by what’s on TV, and – of course – getting stoned.

#9 – Ride to the Beauty Pageant: “Little Miss Sunshine” (2006)

A dysfunctional family packed into a vintage VW bus on their way to a beauty pageant – what could possibly go wrong? Aside from the expected family hijinx between some truly bizarre characters, the laughs come from the unusual car troubles the family encounters. Also, from their decision to transport a corpse. But who hasn’t been there, amirite?

#8 – California Run: “Due Date” (2010)

Robert Downey Jr. is rushing home for the birth of his child. Zach Galifianakis is the moronic wannabe actor who gets himself and Downey kicked off their flight and put on a No-Fly list. Cut to: the road trip where Downey gets hot-boxed, beaten by a wheelchair-bound vet, involved in a major accident and drinks a dead man’s ashes.

#7 – Sea-To-Shining-Sea Dash: “The Cannonball Run” (1981)

Of course a movie this crazy is based on actual events! Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise are just two of the players in this unpredictable cross-country race, and as part of the fun they ride in an ambulance with a cross-eyed proctologist. What makes this unlike any other movie road trip are the absurd racers, like this guy who thinks he’s James Bond, or these guys who are posing as priests!

#6 – The Search for Pamela Anderson: “Borat” (2006)

This gut-busting mockumentary sees Kazakhstani journalist Borat travel to America to learn more about the country, and while there he becomes obsessed with Pamela Anderson. So, he hops in a dilapidated ice cream truck and ventures to make her his wife. Along the way he mocks everyone he meets, and has a gag-inducing nude fight with his colleague. As one does on a road trip.

#5 – Sales Run: “Tommy Boy” (1995)

To save his late father’s legendary auto parts biz, Chris Farley goes on a sales trip with David Spade. The mismatched pair delivers the laughs with their hate-on for one another, various road mishaps, and Tommy’s uncanny ability to scare off customers while cheering up his companion with only a little coat.

#4 – You’re Going the Wrong Way: “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” (1987)

After missing their flight, these guys will get home for Thanksgiving by any means necessary. The stressed out ad exec, played by Steve Martin, ends up commuting with the boisterous and overly talkative shower curtain salesman, played by John Candy. Watching this pair is an absolute riot filled with countless laughs – and some dangerous situations – as they spend three days together watching their car catch fire and spooning in a hotel bed.

#3 – Burger Run: “Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle” (2004)

Hey, we all get the munchies, but these guys take it to a new level. With their hearts set on some White Castle grub, these buddies take to the road before Harold’s insatiable craving for pot kicks in. Soon they meet a string of shocking personalities, including a chick who plays battle shits, a really racist cop, and a deformed Bible-thumping tow truck driver with a hot wife. Dream sequences and a cheetah ride make this road trip extra funny.

#2 – Trip to Aspen: “Dumb and Dumber” (1994)

Idiotic Lloyd and his absent-minded friend Harry drive to Aspen to return a briefcase, never suspecting that it’s packed with ransom money. Riding in the unforgettable Shaggin’ Wagon, they pick up some annoying hitchhikers and amuse us with their brain-dead antics. Highlights include a demonstration of the most annoying sound in the world, a beer bottle mishap, a fateful truck stop incident, and getting frozen together while riding a scooter!

#1 – Griswald Family Vacation: “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983)

Taking the top spot on our list is the Griswald Family’s “Quest for Fun.” Just look at the movie’s poster: you know this is something special! The naïve, obsessive and enthusiastic idiot of a father forces his troops on this cross-country road trip to get to Wally World in the family station wagon, and of course everything that can go wrong does go wrong. Seriously, we’re not even kidding….
