#10: Freddy’s Nose (and Other Sound Effects)

Various When you’re clocking in for your night shift at Fazbear’s Pizza, you’re probably not expecting to giggle. You might, however, if you get a little click-happy on the wall poster that hangs in the first game’s office. If you tap on the pictured Freddy’s nose, it emits an adorable “honk." The endearing sound effect reoccurs throughout the franchise (on posters and Freddy dolls), and it inspired various other audio gags. In “Five Nights 2,” six hundred sixty-six nose clicks produces a farting noise, while clicking Bonnie’s guitar discharges a musical sound. It’s a sweet moment of relief, amidst hours of mind-splitting terror. For bonus points, you can check the exclamation point for a throwback to a certain reptilian-named stealth operative.

#9: “FNaF 3” Map

10 Things Only REAL Fans Noticed In The FNAF Movie

“Five Nights at Freddy’s 3” (2015) Upon the online release of the “Five Nights at Freddy’s 3” map, Freddy fans were quick to decode the image like a cipher. They flipped the map upside down and found that it resembled a familiar blockheaded shape; it was the business logo and avatar of Scott Cawthon, the man who imagined Freddy Fazbear. Cawthon’s earlier games received criticism for having characters that moved like animatronics. He took the critical shade and turned it on its head, developing the “Five Nights at Freddy’s” franchise. Freddy’s world now includes spin-offs, vivid backstory, and a series of novels co-written by Cawthon. Die hard fans need only look at this hidden fingerprint to remember the man…and that it all started with a horrifying animatronic bear.

#8: Blueprints

“Five Nights at Freddy’s: Sister Location” (2016) Even if you’re new to the Freddy franchise, you’ll figure out quickly that one key to survival is “don’t blink.” You might miss a sneak attack…or maybe a secret. The games shuffle through a variety of death screens, and in the case of the “Sister Location” title, this may include eerie blueprints. Among the rarities you might see are schematics for Circus Baby, Funtime Foxy, and other game characters. The most disquieting of these might be the blueprint for Funtime Freddy, which shows a chamber labeled “storage tank.” It’s no stretch to imagine that the intended “storage” could be a captured child. Other blueprints appear in places like the “insanity ending” of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria Simulator, but Sister Location’s drawings take the creepy cake.

#7: Sitting in the Rain Death Screens

“Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria Simulator” (2017) On the topic of death screens, “Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria Simulator” has a few to offer. The series’ sixth game hides rare images that can appear randomly as a death screen or at game start-up, for very lucky players. The chilling sequence shows Freddy and other animatronic characters abandoned and decrepit, sitting lifeless in an alley and drenched in the rain. This likely represents the animatronics as they were before reaching the salvage room, where the player can choose to rescue the haunted machines or throw them back. Seeing these photos might influence that decision, depending whether you feel sorry for the abandoned props…or they just freak you out.

#6: Alley Screens

“Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria Simulator” (2017) And what about that alley, anyways? The walls seem to have been decorated by avid fans of “Five Nights” mythology. Watch closely between lighting flashes, and you’ll catch a curious poster in the background of one alley screen; it shows a purple-suited ventriloquist, a chained bear, and a clown. Fans speculate that these figures could represent the backstory’s Afton family, with the ventriloquist being the murderous Purple Guy. In the background of animatronic Scrap Baby’s alley screen, you can spot Twisted Wolf, a character exclusive to creator Scott Cawthon’s “Five Nights at Freddy’s” novel series. Behind Scraptrap, a Halloween poster suggests the game’s circannual setting. Are the walls peppered with any riddles that we missed? Grab your magnifying glass and let us know.

#5: Newspaper Clippings

Various The Freddy franchise’s origin story appears on one of the series’ earliest latent details: the newspaper clippings. In the first game, observe the “rules for safety” sign in Camera 4B closely, and it will sometimes change to various periodical publications. The different stories chronicle “missing children” cases and headlines regarding the pizzeria’s closure. In one specific ending of Game Three, you can find a newspaper sprinkled with enlightening trivia about Scott Cawthon’s inspiration for the games. One clipping features a photo of a toy Freddy, and when you adjust the screen brightness, you’ll reveal Springtrap lurking in the background. If you’re looking to uncover further “FNAF” mysteries, never skim what’s black, white and blood-red all over.

#4: Fredbear Jumpscare

“Ultimate Custom Night” (2018) Before there was Mickey, there was Oswald the Rabbit. Before there was Freddy Fazbear, there was Fredbear. While the hidden “FNaF World” level and Old Man Consequences cameo are fun, we had to honor the OG animatronic horror. He was one of the first animatronics built in the “Five Nights” timeline, sporting a purple top hat and bow tie…think Golden Freddy auditioning for the Chippendales. In the spin-off “Ultimate Custom Night,” you can set the Withered Golden Freddy to “one” and use a death coin to manifest the authentic Fredbear. With lifeless white eyes, he’ll jumpscare your screen into “game over.” He’ll also utter some super fun, indiscernible demonic hell-speech. Many have tried to decode it…what do you think he says?

#3:Chipper’s Revenge

“FNaF World” (2016) As mentioned earlier, Scott Cawthon’s inspiration for “Five Nights at Freddy’s” sprouted from negative criticism towards his earlier games. One of them was “Chipper & Sons Lumber Company,” who’s supposed “scary-looking animals” gave intellectual birth to the Freddy-bots. In “Five Nights at Freddy’s World,” the ever-expanding universe’s RPG, Mr. Chipper makes a surprise comeback as a secret boss. He can also appear as a party member, if the player completes certain actions. After defeating Chipper’s Revenge, an alternate ending reveals that the robot was just jealous of Freddy’s popularity and the “Five Nights” franchise’s success. It’s a bittersweet fourth-wall-break and tribute to the creepy little guy: turns out, he just wanted to be everyone’s favorite woodland creature.

#2: Rare Death Screens

Top 10 Best Rare Fortnite Skins

Various If there’s a fright you expected to see on our list but haven’t, it probably falls under this umbrella. “Death screens” occur under various circumstances, such as starting the game up, reaching one of several possible endings, or of course…dying. Each game in the series has particularly rare death screens that appear only after certain circumstances, or simply when the player gets lucky (unlucky?). Notables include an eyeless close-up Bonnie, all three of the main animatronics staring at once, or ghastly images of the twisted Springtrap. We suppose there are a thousand ways for a Fazbear security guard to die, and these are…the fun ones…? You can even get the scarce Golden Freddy death screen. And speaking of him…

#1: Golden Freddy

Various The animatronic in the room is Golden Freddy, the series’ premier and best-known Easter egg. In the original “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” players curious about the poster in Cam 2B had a one-in-one-hundred-thousand chance that it would show the face of a golden Freddy Fazbear. Seconds later, a full Golden Freddy would materialize in the office and attack, should the player’s reaction be too slow. GF has reappeared in several forms throughout the franchise, though his origin and true identity still remain unanswered. He appears to be an odd chimera of Freddy Fazbear and Fredbear, though fans continue to speculate about the creature. Maybe it’s best that this enigma touched by Midas remains the game’s most quizzical open-ended question.
