VOICE OVER: Phoebe de Jeu WRITTEN BY: Tal Fox
These feminist moments on "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" were "toit." For this list, we'll be looking at moments, scenes, and episodes where the characters in this police procedural comedy were the ultimate feminist role models and allies. Our countdown includes Gina Linetti being unaplogetic AF, Rosa has Amy's back, Amy goes into labor, and more!

#10: Amy Reminds Rosa About Her Unbreakable Spirit “Return of the King”

This episode marked Melissa Fumero directorial debut. Rosa rocks up to work with two fully bandaged hands and insists that she can get through the day without any help. However, when she finds herself trapped in a cupboard, her spirit starts to waver and she concedes that she may need a hand. While Amy originally argues that true strength is knowing when to ask for help, watching Rosa struggle gives her a change of heart. Instead, she gives her friend an empowering peptalk, restoring Rosa’s unbreakable spirit and helping her free herself. As the pair celebrate the moment, Rosa declares: … “I love being independent!”.

#9: Gina Linetti Being Unapologetic AF Various

Sure, Gina is a tad quirky, but there’s a lot we can learn from her too. While women often feel the need to hold back to avoid being perceived negatively, Gina exudes so much confidence and is never afraid to be herself. Just imagine having the self-assuredness to go around telling people that you are “the Paris of people”. If we could all internalise even a fraction of her spirit, the sky would be the limit. She basically manages to start a cult because she’s the human equivalent of the 100 emoji.

Jake reassures her that he always knew one day she would be his boss and that she shouldn’t give up on a dream she had long before they got together. He even takes a leap of faith for them both...

Jake might have thought he was ahead of the game by preparing a binder full of information on Amy’s dad, but no one files harder than a Santiago. The binders cause an argument between the pair, partially about one of Mr. Santiago’s old cases, but mostly about whether Jake is good enough for Amy. When Amy gets dragged into their argument, she has a few sharp words for her father and her boyfriend. Unknowingly, she also gives them the key to solve the 20 year old case. It’s a great day for feminists, at least according to Jake.

For a brief moment she drops the hard exterior to remind Amy that she’ll always have her back - but Amy has to have hers as well.

#5: Rosa Takes Amy Wedding Dress Shopping “Gray Star Mutual”

Most brides-to-be know the feeling of finding that perfect dress. However, Amy is worried about how she’ll be perceived if she’s seen even browsing gowns online. Despite Amy’s best efforts, Rosa sees straight through her and insists that she deserves to find her perfect dress. Even once they’re in the bridal shop, Amy struggles to let down her guard but then they get radioed about a perp nearby. As Amy chases the guy down, even using her dress to catch him, she proves that you can want to wear a pretty dress and still be a total badass.

It’s a big day for Amy when she makes history as the first female sergeant in her district. Despite following Terry’s advice on commanding respect, Amy struggles to make the same impact, especially when she must deal with “an Amy” who constantly interjects his own ideas any time she pauses. She eventually learns that working with “an Amy” is an asset and finally masters the skills of pausing mid sentence - leaving the staff hanging onto her every word.

However, after Amy slashes Gina’s tire in revenge … and it turns out to be a stranger’s car … Gina does step in and help Amy out, admitting that it was an empowering experience. In the wake of the #MeToo movement, Stephanie Beatriz made her directorial debut on an episode that really highlights an experience that many women know all too well. When a sexual harassment case comes to the precinct, Amy reflects on her own experiences, and generally, the microaggressions women deal with every day. While Amy and Rosa disagree on how to handle the case, Jake questions his own role in the conversation and how he can be a better ally. The outcome is bittersweet, as while Keri is outcast for reporting her attacker, her colleague finds the courage to come forward too.
