VOICE OVER: Liam Schell WRITTEN BY: Tiffany Ezuma
We would have shipped them 'til the end . . . but it just wasn't to be. These are the 10 celebrity couple breakups that broke our hearts in 2018! We're looking at celebrities whose relationships ended in 2018, dashing our hopes for a happy ending. We've included couples like Diddy & Cassie, Sam Smith & Brandon Flynn, G-Eazy & Halsey, Rebecca Gayheart & Eric Dane, Ruth Negga & Dominic Cooper, Claire Foy & Stephen Campbell Moore, Ariana Grande & Mac Miller and more of your favorite couples.

#10: Diddy & Cassie

Celeb Reactions to Sean Diddy Combs Allegations

This hip-hop power couple started quietly dating over a decade ago when Diddy was at the height of his fame and Cassie was an up-and-coming artist. While they weren’t quick to confirm their romance back then, they soon became a beloved item and frequent guests at A-list functions including the coveted Met Gala. They seemed to steady one another so it was a shock when out of the blue, they admitted they’d been separated for a few months by the time their breakup even hit the tabloids. The former lovers seem to have ended on good terms, with Cassie supporting Diddy after the tragic death of his former partner.

#9: Sam Smith & Brandon Flynn

Sam Smith famously wrote the ballads for his debut album “In the Lonely Hour” without having ever been in a serious relationship. So fans were ecstatic when Sam began to step out with Brandon Flynn, the “13 Reasons Why” actor, in late 2017. Things sounded like they were serious, with the pair meeting each other’s families and those infamous makeout photos making the rounds on the Internet. But just when Sam thought he’d be writing love songs, the duo split after nine months together, citing their busy schedules as the cause.

#8: G-Eazy & Halsey

Halsey and G-Eazy were the popstar/rapper power couple of our time but it seems like it was over before it even began! Dating for just nine months, the twosome were seemingly everywhere together from their infamous yacht vacation photos to performances of their hit song “Him & I” to sold-out crowds. They had a fiery chemistry that was fun to watch but also seemed to lead to their demise. Whether it was rumors of his infidelity or her alleged fling with his rival Machine Gun Kelly while they were on a break, they couldn’t seem to find a way to make it work.

#7: Rebecca Gayheart & Eric Dane

Fourteen years of marriage is a long time for any couple, but in Hollywood, that’s practically forever! Rebecca, best best known for her roles in “Urban Legend” and “Jawbreaker”, and Eric for his “Grey’s Anatomy” character McSteamy, had weathered public scrutiny in the past thanks to a nude video leaked in 2009 and Eric’s battles with addiction and depression. For a while at least, adversity seemed only to have made them stronger, so it came as a shock when Rebecca filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences.” It’s still not clear exactly what went wrong but the two seem focused on co-parenting their two girls, and we wish them the best of luck.

#6: Ruth Negga & Dominic Cooper

Perhaps one of the most underrated celeb couples out there, Ruth and Dominic seemed like they were so well suited. The low-key couple first met during a theater production of “Phedre” in 2009. They continued to mix their personal and professionals lives, acting together in projects like 2016’s “Warcraft” and the TV show “Preacher”. During their eight years together, Ruth often spoke about how their relationship got her through long days on set. Their breakup in 2018 seemed relatively drama free, so maybe their relationship simply ran its course.

#5: Claire Foy & Stephen Campbell Moore

2018 was quite the year for Claire Foy with her continued success on “The Crown,” numerous movie roles, and a hosting stint on SNL. However, it was a year of closure as well as new opportunities. In February, Claire and husband Stephen Campbell Moore, best known for his role in “The History Boys”, issued a joint statement announcing they’d been “separated for some time”. The couple met in 2011 while filming “Season of the Witch,” wed in 2014 and have a daughter together. They seem committed to remaining on good terms, telling the press that they remain “great friends with the utmost respect for one another”.

#4: Ariana Grande & Mac Miller

While Ariana had a high profile year with her acclaimed album “Sweetener”, and her first number one single in the US, she also had two highly publicized breakups, including with SNL star Pete Davidson. But it’s her breakup with Mac Miller that hit harder. After two years together, the pair broke up in May with Ariana writing a heartfelt post to fans on Instagram about Mac being one of her best friends and one of the best people she knows. They seemed to have had a lot of love and respect for each other, but Mac tragically passed away in September after losing his battle with drug addiction.

#3: John Cena & Nikki Bella

John Cena VS The Rock

The power couple of the WWE, John and Nikki were a celebrity duo that felt real. Their relationship played out on Nikki’s reality show, “Total Bellas,” and fans saw them work momentous issues like deciding whether or not to have kids. After a beautiful proposal at WrestleMania 33 in 2017 it seemed like they were on the right road but a year later they called off the wedding, admitting that not seeing each other for months at a time had been a major hurdle. Although they briefly reconciled, their relationship fell apart for good by late summer.

#2: Jennifer Aniston & Justin Theroux

After years of enduring her relationship with ex-Brad Pitt being splashed all over the tabloids, it seemed like Jennifer had found a happy and stable relationship with Justin. The well-matched couple met after they starred together in 2011’s “Wanderlust,” and seemed like a great case of opposites attract with his brooding New Yorker persona and her laid-back Californian ease. They were engaged within a year of dating and married in 2015. They had their fair share of tabloids written about them with constant speculation about whether they’d start a family or not. Neither partner revealed what their breaking point was but Jen insists she’s not heartbroken.

Before we unveil our number one pick, here are a few honorable mentions:

Kaitlyn Bristowe & Shawn Booth

Liam Payne & Cheryl Cole

Kendra Wilkinson & Hank Baskett

#1: Channing Tatum & Jenna Dewan

Top 10 Reasons We’re Sad Channing Tatum & Jenna Dewan Tatum Broke Up

Quite frankly, Channing and Jenna were not only one of Hollywood’s best looking couples but one of the most charming as well, which made their break-up that much harder. Together since starring in “Step Up,” the couple was known for being each other’s biggest cheerleaders and genuinely having a strong friendship to bond them. They made us laugh with frequent appearances together, most notably their epic performances on “Lip Sync Battle.” Nonetheless, they announced their parting in April, and have since both moved onto other high-profile relationships. They may not be together anymore but at least we’ll have their dance videos to console us.
