These crime-fighters aren’t winning any popularity contests anytime soon. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today, we’re counting down our picks for the top 10 most difficult superheroes to work with.

For this list, we’re looking at the comic book heroes who’ve earned a reputation for difficulty, for one reason or another.

#10: Spawn

Created in 1992 by writer and artist Todd McFarlane as the original face of Image Comics, Spawn is a former CIA agent-turned-agent of Hell who decides to rebel against his destiny as a leader of Hell’s armies. Spawn becomes a brutal anti-hero and over time has found himself caught between the forces of Heaven and Hell. With his murderous past, a tendency towards violence and hellish set of powers, Spawn has a hard time playing well with others. His allies are few and far between, and the ones that do appear never seem to last very long.

#9: Emma Frost

Frost is a former villain of the X-Men who eventually became a leading member of the team. Frost’s abilities as a telepath rival those of Jean Grey and Professor X, and she has become a primary off-and-on love interest of Scott Summers. Despite her status in the X-Men, Frost often still displays the same selfishness and cold harsh personality as she did during her time as a villain. Emma has proven herself to be a valuable member of the X-Men despite this, and she has even served as a trainer of younger mutants at Xavier’s Academy, often pushing them incredibly hard.

#8: Damian Wayne

The son of Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul, Damian was raised and trained by the notorious League of Assassins and was already an incredibly skilled fighter by the time he met his father at the age of 10. Damian has calmed down in the years since first coming into the care of his father but remains brash, arrogant and untrusting. He has a history of murder and even attempted to kill Tim Drake when he first arrived at Wayne Manor. Younger Damian may have ended up higher on our list, but his training under Bruce and newfound friendship with Jonathan Kent, son of Superman and Lois Lane, shows Damian is on the right track.

#7: Doctor Strange

Stephen Strange was a surgeon with a reputation for arrogance who undergoes a journey to restore his hands after a car accident injury when he comes into contact with a sorcerer known as the Ancient One, quickly training and taking on the title of Sorcerer Supreme. As a common ally to many Marvel heroes including Spider-Man and the Avengers, as well as headlining his own stories, Strange has shown himself to be powerful and reliable, but not without his own difficulties. Strange has shown he has little patience for humor and nonsense and tends to talk down to and be quite critical of those around him.

#6: Wolverine

Good old Logan. Despite the hero’s many accomplishments, it’s common knowledge that working with Wolverine can be a real pain. Logan tends to do things his own way, usually preferring to stick to himself unless forced to work with a team. He’s violent and slow to trust others, with a tough exterior that can be off-putting and incredibly intimidating. If you’re able to get past all of that, Wolverine is undoubtedly one of the strongest leaders the X-Men have ever had, but nobody can claim that he’s the friendliest or easiest to talk to.

#5: Captain Marvel

Carol Danvers was an Air Force pilot who eventually gained alien powers from the race known as the Kree and became Ms. Marvel. Danvers operated as Ms. Marvel for a number of years and would eventually become Captain Marvel. Carol has always acted in a way she perceives honorable, but this has often caused problems, especially in recent years. Carol’s almost authoritarian attitude when it came to stopping criminals before they commit crimes led to Marvel’s second Civil War and caused the (temporary) deaths of heroes such as Bruce Banner, James Rhodes, and Tony Stark.

#4: Batman

The Dark Knight is one of the leaders of the Justice League, but Bruce Wayne still manages to be one of the hardest heroes to work with. Bruce can be harsh, critical and short-tempered, and is notoriously slow to trust. He has a history of keeping things hidden from his closest allies and is always prepared to take down anyone, even Superman if it comes down to it. He’s constantly brooding and pushes his friends and family away. In spite of all of this, Batman has proven time and time again to be one of the greatest allies in the DC universe, if you manage to get past that hard outer shell of his.

#3: Iron Man

Tony Stark has, at times, been infamously selfish, arrogant and self-righteous. Being a major figure in both of Marvel’s Civil Wars, Stark has a penchant for butting heads with other heroes who oppose him ideologically. He is stubborn and often unwilling to be talked down from his questionable ideas. Tony will do whatever he believes is necessary, generally in whatever way he thinks he can, which is something that can cause problems with those around him. At the end of the day, though, Tony Stark usually ends up on the right side of conflicts. It just isn’t always a smooth ride there.

#2: Punisher

Former Marine Frank Castle’s family was murdered by the mob, causing him to spiral into becoming the murderous vigilante known as the Punisher. The character has appeared both as an antagonist and a tenuous-ally to many heroes, but rarely does he drop his violent tendencies. When Castle showed up on Captain America’s side during the first Civil War, many of the heroes even questioned whether he should be allowed to be there at all. The Punisher often targets mob members and other more realistic villains than many Marvel comics tend to deal with, which works with Castle’s violence to develop a darker tone that follows his character wherever he appears.

#1: Deadpool

Imagining Wade Wilson from the perspective of the other heroes in the Marvel universe, working with Deadpool has to be utterly terrifying. With his constant banter and fourth-wall breaking, he appears to be little more than an unpredictable, deadly wild card that has a very loose grip on reality. The Merc with a Mouth never takes anything seriously, down to even the greatest threats such as Thanos or the catastrophic end of the multiverse. With his constant violent outbursts and seeming inability to follow any kinds of rules, working with Deadpool has to be an absolute nightmare, except when you need someone with his very specific set of skills.
