Top 10 Most Popular Anime Characters

These characters undoubtedly steal our hearts no matter what they do. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the top 10 mostbeloved Anime characters. For this list we’re looking at the most charming characters in Anime, be it a protagonist or antagonist that we’ve grown to love over the years. We’re ranking these charcaters based on their popularity among anime fans and how endeering they are in the long run. Also, because some of these series have so many greatcharacters to choose form, we’re going with one per franchise.

#10: Kakashi “Naruto” Franchise (2002-)

While Naruto is endearing throughout the series, we have to give our first pick to his mentor Kakashi for his loyalty and easy-going nature. Known for being the calm and mysterious leader of Team 7, he is tasked with teaching Naruto and his friends how to be ninjas, and more importantly, learn to fight alongside one an other. Always remaining somewhat detached from his students, Kakashi is not only a father figure to his pupils, but a favorite for Naruto fans everywhere. We can be rest assured that Kakashi will always be there for his students whenever they need him, even if he has trouble keeping tack of time.

#9: Kenshin Himura “Rurouni Kenshin” (1996-98)

Also in:

Anime Duel: Roronoa Zoro Vs Himura Kenshin

You’re probably asking yourselves this question… How could a skilled assassin-turned-wandering swordsman be lovable? Well, this man is the very defenition of someone who has ‘turned over a new leaf’. Using a reverse-edge swrord Kenshin refuses to kill, even when his own life epends on it. His selflessness, strength, kindness and bravery are just some of the reasons why this loner protagonist is loved by all anime fans. His vow to never kill again as well as protect those that need protection is what truly makes him quite memorable.

#8: Portgas D. Ace “One Piece” (1999-)

Although Monkey D. Luffy is thrill-seeking and more than a little likeable, his big brother Ace takes our number 8 spot. Ace has all his brother’s sense for adventure but is a little more polite and down-to-earth. Known for his bizzare sleeping habits and fire abilities, Ace can take a punch and insult here and there, but if you hurt those he loves, you better be ready for a fight. Watching the fun-loving and fearless Ace look out for his younger brother is something we can’t help but praise him for.

#7: Yusuke Urameshi “Yu Yu Hakusho” Franchise (1992-1996)

Also in:

Anime Duel: Gon Freecss Vs Yusuke Urameshi

Having neglectful parents made this teenager grow up to be impulsive and with as short a temper as one can have. When Yusuke sacrafices himself to save a child from a car accident – it just proves that heroes can come from the most unlikely of places. After going through tasks to be resurrected, he becomes a Spirit Detective whose job is to investigate demon activities in the supernatural world. While he clearly isn’t the smartest character in the series, not by a longshot, there is something about his endeering stupidity that makes us love him all the more.

#6: Rukia Kuchiki “Bleach” (2004-12)

This responsible rabbit-loving girl is the lieutenant of the 13th Division of the Soul Society. A good fighter as well as the team’s moral compass, Rukia is a skilled problem-solver and the show just wouldn’t be the same without her. With a cool and strong persona, Rukia is modest to a fault and is the one who transfers her powers to the show’s lead character Ichigo. She may be inexperienced in the ways of the human world but that’s exactly why she is so adorable.

#5: L “Death Note” (2006-07)

Also in:

Top 10 Anime Characters That Died Too Soon

This detective is as mysterious as they come, and may be the only one who can stop progagonist-villain Light, aka Kira from twisting the world in his own corrupt image. Ummm… spoilers? While L has a lot of bizzare quirks and a strange vandetta against wearing shoes, his introverted, almost autistic nature keeps his ego in check. You would think a guy who eats all that cake and puts that much sugar in his tea would be a little more outgoing.

#4: Alucard “Hellsing” Franchise (2001-12)

Also in:

Anime Duel: Alucard vs Dio Brando

Watch out, here comes the most bad-ass vampire in anime. With a brutally violent nature and egotistical personality, Alucard is an immortal vampire with a lot of personality. He may be powerful enough to rip you or anyone to shreds, but underneath that arrogant exterior is a bit of humanity; not much, but it’s there, we promise. While Alucard could probably rule the world if he ever went to the dark side, he is envious of humans and wishes he himself could simply move on to the next life. Maybe he just needs a foe worthy of his power.

#3: Edward Elric “Fullmetal Alchemist” Franchise (2003-10)

With a series so full of cool characters like Alphonse and Maes Hughes, it’s The Full Metal Alchemist who gets a spot on this list. After Al loses his body and Edward two of his limbs while trying to resurrect their dead mother, it’s up to Ed to restore himself and his brother to their original state. This alchemist starts off as an irritable and stubborn teen but as the series progresses, we see that he is actually an unselfish and compassionate soul. Whether the trouble he gets into is hit fault or not, there’s no denying that Edward will stop at nothing to protect his little brother.

#2: Pikachu “Pokémon” (1997-)

Also in:

Top 10 Amazing Facts About Pikachu

This character’s notriety transcends anime, and we bet there are few people here, or anywhere for that matter that wouldn’t recognize Pikachu. He may look cuddly but don’t be fooled, this little rat-thing can be quite literally a lightning bolt when you make him angry. This fiercely loyal Pokémon started out as a rebellious pet until until he and his trainer Ash formed one of the most powerful bonds in anime. Since then, Pikachu has become Ash’s long-time travel companion and has gained lifelong adoration from audiences over the years. Before we get to our top pick, here are some honourable mentions: Lucy Heartfilia “Fairy Tail” (2009-) Levi Ackerman “Attack on Titan” (2013-) Yugi Muto “Yu-Gi-Oh!” (1998-2004) Robert Edward O. Speedwagon “JoJo's Bizarre Adventure” Franchise (2012-) Spike Spiegel “Cowboy Bebop” (1998-99) Vash the Stampede “Trigun” (1998-)

#1: Goku “Dragon Ball” Franchise (1986-)

Also in:

Anime Duel: Goku Vs Saitama

This popular series has a ton of interesting individuals, take the arrogant-yet-bad-ass Vegeta for example, but none is more iconic and loved than Son Goku. We started following Kakarot’s adventure on the small screen back in 1986, where he began as a curious and energetic young boy zipping around on a floating cloud. Since then Goku has grown into one of the most beloved and couragous anime characters of all time. He’s been through a lot over the years, and his bonds of friendship are as powerful as his Kamehameha! Do you agree with our list? Which anime character do love?
