Top 10 Anticipated Anime Winter 2020 Time to kick off the new decade in style! Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we are counting down our picks for the Top 10 Anticipated Anime of Winter 2020. For this list, we’ll be looking at the upcoming sequel series and new properties set to be released at the start of the new year. Get ready to thaw that winter chill!

#10: “Somali and the Forest Spirit” (2020)

Who’s ready for a feel-good time in a world of monsters and magic? With tranquil visuals and a softer storytelling approach, even with a narrative centred around the extinction of mankind this series looks set to follow in the footsteps of Mushishi as opposed to Attack on Titan. Following a random encounter, a lost human child and a golem find their fates woven together, forging a father-daughter bond that we can already tell is going to be bringing the feels in spades. Here’s hoping it turns out to be just as enchanting as its premise.

#9: “Drifting Dragons” (2020)

Turns out that dragon hunting is a good business, so long as you’ve got an airship and a capable crew to help you fish for the flying bastards. Might sound like we’re in for some good ol’ monster slaying, but given the previews we’ve seen so far, it looks like the focus is going to be on the humans aboard the Quin Zaza and their interpersonal relationships compared to the beasts they’re searching the sky for. Which suits us just fine, since despite the CGI design, there appears to be plenty of charm radiating behind it!

#8: “Nekopara” (2020)

They’re here to serve and look nyan-tastic while doing so. It’s got cute girls, with cat ears, working in a maid café, doing cutesy things while each fluffy maiden gets into all manner of sticky situations…in the cutest way possible. It’s based on a beloved visual novel, what do you expect? While there’s no evidence of any potential lewdness just yet, at the very least this show looks to be cinnamon roll sweet with a bunch of cat girls that fans are bound to fight over for who gets top bill.

#7: “Isekai Quartet” Season Two (2020)

Top 20 Isekai Anime

Nobody expected the first season to be such a hit, but thanks to it capitalising on the collective weirdness and manic nature of each cast, this ensemble managed to hit that sweet spot! Evidently, fans couldn’t get enough of the interactions between the likes of Ainz Ooal Gown, Subaru, Tanya, Kazuma and the rest. However, we have more reason than most to be excited about this second outing, since it’s introducing a brand new isekai-er on the block – Naofumi and the rest of the gang from The Rising of the Shield Hero! We aren’t prepared for the cuteness that will come from Raphtalia meeting Rem, Megumin and the rest of the best girls club!

#6: “In/Spectre” (2020)

Also in:

Top 10 Anticipated Anime of Winter 2018

One part detective thriller, one part supernatural, all held together by the unlikely partnership of a buff college student with some severe issues, and an odd girl now standing in as the resident consultation expert for spirits with issues. As the newly imposed God of Wisdom, it falls to Kotoko to aid spirits and humans with their issues whenever the two worlds crossover, all the while harbouring some desperate feelings for her new unexpected partner in crime. While the premise isn’t anything new, we’re hoping this darker take will really manage to elevate it above some of its competitors!

#5: “A Certain Scientific Railgun T” (2020)

Also in:

Top 10 Anime Fights of 2020

Touma and Accelerator have both had their turn, now it’s time for the Railgun to leap back into the fray, take the driver’s seat, and show the rest while she’s the de facto esper. Took her sweet time, didn’t she? Hopefully she can pull herself and the rest of Academy City out of the lull that was Index Season Three and deliver some shocking action, plenty of hilarious scenes between her and Kuroko, as well as all of the other issues that come with spending your days blasting down terrorists with your bare fingers. Bring it on home Misaka!

#4: “The Quintessential Quintuplets” Season Two (2020)

Also in:

Top 10 Anime Winter 2021

Tis the season for harems, especially when it comes to these five siblings and their mismatched infatuations for their young tutor. Continuing on after their recent introduction earlier this year, it’s pretty much been established that Miku and the rest haven’t only come into their own as young ladies with individual passions, but also have their hearts gunning for their unorthodox teacher. Who will come out on top? First girl Itsuki? Adorable pessimist Miku? Die-hard maternal figure Nino? Talented tease Ichika or ray of sunshine Yotsuba? Just hurry up and pick Futaro before you give all five romances a failing grade!

#3: “Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story” (2020)

It’s pretty obvious that this is likely not going to be as ground-breaking as its predecessor. No surprise given the Urobutcher’s original work was a mini masterpiece, while this is based on a smartphone game. That being said, the fact Kyubey is making a reappearance and the animation looks staggering has us actively wanting to hop back into this twisted take on the magical girl genre. We can only guess how many turns Iroha’s mission to save her sister will take now that she’s part of the Incubator’s plan!

#2: “Dorohedoro” (2020)

Blood, guts, and lots of dead magic users. Needless to say, we can’t wait to dive head-first into this bloodbath. While the residents of the Hole live in fear of the psychotic magic users who pick off innocents to use in their sick experiments – there’s one individual who is ready to bite back. Quite literally in his case, since he’s a giant reptile hybrid that’s immune to magic and has a tendency to devour any magic user he comes across as a way to reclaim his lost memories. Murder, depravity and a psycho love interest just trying to run a restaurant – we are so ready for this crazy train!

#1: “Haikyu!!: To the Top” (2020)

By far one of the most anticipated sequels in a while, the return of the flightless crows is something of a landmark given its place in modern anime as the definitive sport’s show that spiked right into the hearts of fans the world over. While it seems difficult to imagine opponents more imposing than Shiratorizawa, now that the Nationals are upon them, the boys in orange look set to take on challenges inside that the court that will require them to soar even higher.
