Superhero Origins: Emma Frost

Superhero Origins: Emma Frost
VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton
She first appeared in the Uncanny X-Men comics, as a mutant telepath with a dry wit. Initially known as the White Queen, complete with a revealing white costume, she has undergone significant changes since her inception. This includes switching from one of the X-Men's most dangerous foes to one of its closest allies. Initially using her powers of mind control to gain vast amounts of wealth, she was later invited to join a secret organization of the elite. Discovering their plan to eliminate all mutants, she allied with a fellow mutant to seize control of the group. At the same time, she created her own mutant academy and clashed with the X-Men repeatedly. Eventually wounded by a menacing threat, she willed her estate to Charles Xavier and the X-Men, trusting enemy mutants over humans. Awaking, she soon discovered that she had more in common with her former enemies then she once thought. At the same time she began having a psychic affair with Cyclops and discovered that she had a second mutation, the ability to form a protective diamond skin. In this video, http://www.WatchMojo.com takes a look at the complicated and intriguing origin story of the White Queen, Emma Frost.
Superhero Origins: Emma Frost

She has gone from one of the X-men’s most dangerous foes to one of its central members. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we will explore the comic book origin of Emma Frost.

As with most comic book characters, there are often re-imaginations and different versions to a character’s past. We have chosen to primarily follow the storyline, which unfolded in the ‘Uncanny X-Men’ (#129, Vol. 1, 1980) and was expanded on in the self-titled series ‘Emma Frost’ and ‘Generation X'.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Emma Frost grew up as a member of a rich business family. One of three mutant sisters, her telepathic abilities manifested when she reached puberty.

Using her powers to become a top student, she fled from home when her father discovered that she had begun a romantic relationship with her teacher.

Distancing herself from his strict influence, she fled to become a stripper at the Hellfire club, while attending Empire State University.

Later, she created her own wealth by rapidly rising through the business world through the use of her charm and telepathic abilities. Becoming the head of a multi-billion dollar transportation conglomerate called Frost International, she also took charge of a college prep school in Snow Valley called the Massachusetts Academy.

Due to her immense wealth, beauty and talents, the Hellfire Club eventually invited her to become an inside member. Joining forces with Sebastian Shaw, a member of the club’s secret ‘Council of the Chosen’, she helped the group conspire toward economic and political world domination. However, using her mind-reading powers she discovered that their real purpose was to destroy all mutants.

Staging a coup with Shaw, who turned out to be a fellow mutant, they took control of the council and renamed it the Inner Circle. In turn, she took on the name and persona of the White Queen.

Seeking out super powerful young mutants, she changed her prep school into a recruitment center for the Inner Circle and formed a team of super villains called the Hellions.

Encountering her polar opposite organization in the form of Charles Xavier’s academy and his X-Men, they clashed several times.

She was eventually attacked by a time-traveler who unleashed deadly Sentinel robots against her. Placing herself in a psychic coma, she survived, while most of her Hellions were killed.

Having constantly feared anti-mutant strikes, Frost had already willed the care of her school to Charles Xavier, as a result of trusting enemy mutants over humans.

With her body falling to the care of Xavier’s team, she eventually emerged from her sleep to find out that her school had been added to the Xavier institute.

Having been looked after by Xavier, she chose to return to join forces with the X-Men, helping to train a new team of students called Generation X.

While teaching at the mutant haven of Genosha, another sudden attack by Sentinels caused her to discover that she had a secondary mutation, the ability to form a flexible organic diamond skin.

Nearly invincible, it saved her from the massacre, but caused her to become cold hearted and lose her sense of empathy while transformed.

With her loyalty constantly coming into question over the years, Emma Frost remains attached to the X-men through her complicated relationship with Cyclops.

As a central member of the X-Men universe, she has since made a cameo in the film ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine,’ and is a central character in the X-Men prequel ‘First Class.’
