#3: Exec Says Ghost in the Shell Bombed Over Whitewashing Controversy
With a measly $19 million in sales from its opening weekend, Ghost in the Shell couldn’t seem to shake off the damage caused by the epic outcry of whitewashing surrounding Scarlett Johansson’s casting as Major Motoko Kusanagi. After the film’s disastrous weekend, which saw the movie earn less than half of what The Boss Baby made, Paramount distribution chief, Kyle Davies admitted that the whitewashing controversy played a major part in the anime’s lack of success. “I think the conversation regarding casting impacted the reviews,” Davies said. “You’ve got a movie that is very important to the fanboys since it’s based on a Japanese anime movie. So you’re always trying to thread that needle between honoring the source material and making a movie for a mass audience.” With only 45 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, Paramount will be left wondering whether or not casting the caucasian A-lister was the right decision.

Yeah, it’s pretty bad. Shia LaBeouf’s new movie, Man Down, took its title a little too literally and flopped with and unfathomable opening U.K. weekend of £7, or $8.70 American. That’s one ticket. To be fair, the film did only play at one theatre in Burnley, England, but the theatre did see a sales increase of 200 percent after opening weekend, lifting the grand total of Man Down’s box office numbers to £21, or $26.20 US – three tickets! In comparison, the film grossed $454,490 when it opened in a limited release in the States in December. The film follows Shia, an American soldier who returns from a tour in Afghanistan with PTSD. The film has not been received very well, with a low 15% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. No word on whether the first UK ticket holder enjoyed the movie, though, as the cinema owner was not able to identify who actually bought it. Heath Ledger would have turned 38-years-old this Wednesday, so in honor of his birthday, Spike released the first trailer for I Am Heath Ledger, an intimate documentary about the life and death of the late, great actor. The trailer is a mishmash of interviews with family, friends and Hollywood celebrities. But what’s most captivating are the snippets of home video in which Ledger is holding the camera himself, directing his subjects as well as himself. The documentary, produced by Spike TV, follows the actor’s career, his behind-the-scenes life, and his desire and subsequent distaste for fame. Ledger’s death in 2008 shocked the world when it was revealed he passed away from cardiac arrest brought on by prescription drug intoxication. The documentary will premiere April 23rd at the Tribeca Film Festival, and will play on Spike TV May 17th.
