#10: Jasper Rolls
“Psychonauts” (2005)

Criticism can be tough to deal with, especially when it is literally fired at you. After chasing down the Phantom, Raz learns his true identity as the sour critic Jasper Rolls. As he pilots a flying theatre box he attacks the player by shooting cynical ink blots from gigantic pens attached at the sides. To defeat the pretentious devil, players need to levitate above the battleground and use three spotlights to stun him. Easier said than done especially when being informed of your ‘crude’ and ‘plain’ fighting style.

#9: The Heart of the Foe
“Ecco: Defender of the Future” (2000)

For those unaware this is a game about a dolphin saving humanity from a violent species who are conquered by literally breaking their heart. We don’t need to say any more than that as the premise itself is beyond ridiculous enough. Swimming inside the belly of the beast, Ecco must shoot small vitalits into the massive heart to take down the foe. A story about a superhero dolphin wouldn’t be complete without a truly ridiculous boss and this one certainly delivers.

#8: Alien Queen
“Duke Nukem Forever” (2011)

Top 10 Alien Species in Video Games

The game that took over a decade to be released certainly came packed with an insane boss battle. Just looking at this beast you can instantly see the aspects that make it a sure fire entry on this list. During the early days of the invasion the Alien Queen made a nest for her assorted offspring in the depths of the Duke Dome. Spreading her entangling body across the entire facility, she is the mother of every organic alien lifeform found in the Hive. Does this remind anyone else of Total Recall?

#7: Mom
“The Binding of Isaac” (2011)

At the end of the prologue, players must do battle with the most ‘Freudian’ boss to grace our list. A disgusting and delusional woman by nature, she believes the hallucinations telling her to kill her son to actually be the voice of God. Players see very little of her as she limits her attacks to stomping with her killer heels or by dropping pieces of flesh that evolve into additional enemies. She makes a dramatic return in the “Wrath of the Lamb” DLC as the final boss of the alternate chapter ‘Necropolis’.

#6: Valor
“Bayonetta 2” (2014)

We’ve heard of wearing your heart on your sleeve, but how do you wear your face on your shield? When the player crosses the ‘Bridge to The Heavens’ they come face to face with a living, gigantic angel. His design and scale appears very similar to Valiance earlier in the game and has a strong implication of being the same person. His massive gold sword matches the bravery he is regarded with, but we’re still not sure why he holds his face on his shield.

#5: Mega-Smith
“The Matrix: The Path of Neo” (2005)

The 10 HARDEST Mega Man Boss Fights

Having a sense of humour about your work is great, especially when it leads to a completely ludicrous boss battle. After playing through the entire Matrix trilogy in game form, the player is greeted by the Wachowski’s as they explain their troubles to make a satisfying end-game boss. Throwing away the philosophies and Jesus imagery of the movies, (Thank God) Neo ends the game with a catastrophic fight against a gigantic Mega-Smith. Built from all the Agents piling onto of each other, the Mega-Smith fits as a hilarious self-parody courtesy of the film’s directors.

#4: The Bride
“Ms Splosion Man” (2011)

Top 23 Video Game Boss Battles of Each Year

Where do we start with this one? The self-referential arcade game puts the player in a “Punch-Out!” style fight against a scarily blank-faced bride, or at least that’s how it looks at first. After defeating her first form, the Bridge morphs into a horrific, purple mess with the biggest eyes we’ve ever seen. Continuing the fight she brandishes even more arms from her chest complete with knuckle dusters. If this isn’t the scariest thing to see on your wedding night, we don’t know what could beat it.

#3: Stacey’s Robot
“Dead Rising 2: Off The Record” (2012)

Frank West has covered wars but nothing can prepare him for this final boss. In the alternative story of Fortune City’s outbreak, players control the famed photographer as he uncovers another zombie conspiracy. What he didn’t expect was the master villain to break out a gigantic robot built from assorted theme park attractions. After using whatever he can find to bring down the huge claws, and taking the odd snapshot now and then, Frank beats Stacey in a fist fight and successfully brings down any realism left in the franchise. Not that there was much to start with.

#2: Toasty
“Spyro the Dragon” (1998)

You shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, and you certainly shouldn’t judge a boss by its first form. Upon finishing the Artisan world at the start of the game, Spyro is introduced to a pumpkin-headed shepherd known as Toasty. After a few flames from the dragon’s breath, his outer coat burns up to reveal a lowly sheep propped up on stilts. With the loss of his scythe and his dignity, Toasty is left as one of the most ridiculous boss battles in the entire series.

Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honourable mentions

Giygas
“Earthbound” (1994)

Prince Froggy
“Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island” (1995)

John Romero
“Doom 2” (1994)

Evila
“Space Channel 5” (1999)

Giant Nazi Zombie Fetus
“South Park: The Stick of Truth” (2014)

#1: Mother
“House of the Dead: Overkill” (2009)

OK, here us out on this one. After engaging in an incestuous relationship with his dying mother, Clement Darling plans to transfer her brain into the body of Varla Guns to sustain her life. He fails and she is shot into a vat of acid, and this is the delightful horror that we get. Gigantic in size and horrific in looks, G and Isaac see it fit to use miniguns to bring this mother down. A ridiculous story with a ridiculous final boss is the perfect champion for this list.
