When someone’s freaking out, obviously the solution is to take off one’s shirt. In “An American Werewolf in Paris,” tourist Andy McDermott is having quite the uncomfortable turn of events. Awaking to find himself in the bed of Julie Delpy’s Sérafine, Andy begins to panic... so Sérafine lets him touch her bare chest, as she explains the situation. Not only is this an odd combination of exposition and nudity – or sexposition, as we like to call it – the scene as a whole also feels forced, and somewhat awkward, considering Andy and Sérafine aren’t alone in the room.

Watch out, world – trousers are about to be dropped. Ewan McGregor appears as Curt Wild, an Iggy Pop-style rock star with a flair for the dramatic. Case in point: In the middle of playing a venue, Wild opts to undo his belt and hop out of his pants, mooning the crowd and exposing himself in full. While Wild’s intent seems to be to deliberately insult his audience, we can’t say stripping down was the most fitting means to that end. Hey, sometimes you just gotta rock out with your…well, you get it.

Does this qualify as exploitation? Shortly after enjoying some “quality time” with a lover, Betsy Rue’s character, Irene, learns she’s been filmed without her knowledge or consent... and promptly chases after the man responsible. The events of the next five minutes shift from a tense shouting match to a desperate horror sequence, yet Ms. Rue remains in the buff throughout. Given with the grisly fate that eventually befalls Irene, gratuitous nudity seems more than a little out of place here. For a 3D film, it’s pretty two-dimensional.

Apparently cake isn’t the only surprise here. In the action film “Under Siege,” actor Steven Seagal plays an ex-Navy SEAL serving as the cook aboard the battleship USS Missouri. When mercenaries attack the Missouri, Seagal begins to fight back and patrol the ship – only to stumble upon a cake hiding Playboy Playmate Jordan Tate portrayed by Playboy Playmate Erika Eleniak. Eleniak’s sudden appearance and brief toplessness come out of nowhere, with Seagal’s deadpan reaction capturing the scene’s odd nature.

An angry naked man in the trunk of a car – didn’t see that one coming. Midway through “The Hangover,” the Wolfpack drives around in a car filled with questionable contents. When they hear a noise coming from the trunk, the three men go to investigate... and who should pop out but Ken Jeong, naked as a jaybird and wielding a crowbar. True, the resulting over-the-top beat down is hilarious and Jeong sells the scene, but having him be completely nude seems a bit unnecessary.

#5: Kelly Brook & Riley Steele “Piranha 3D” (2010)

We imagine this scene drew a lot of people’s attention. “Piranha 3D” stars, among other people, model Kelly Brook and porn star Riley Steele as a pair of young actresses. During one relaxing sequence, Brook and Steele opt to partake in some underwater skinny-dipping – which the film shows in full. What makes the scene especially bizarre is the accompanying classical music, possibly as a means of making it seem more significant and less like blatant fan service. Whatever, Jerry O’Connell doesn’t seem to think it’s so gratuitous.

Amusing gag aside, it’s hard to make a case for the increasing gratuity of this scene’s nudity. This 2005 film adaptation of the classic television show features a sequence in which brothers Bo and Luke Duke visit a university. But they ain’t there to do some learnin’; they’re fixin’ to find Katie Johnson. The Duke brothers pop into three consecutive rooms, each time faced with girls wearing less and less clothing... until they enter the last room inhabited by topless women. While some may be amused by the escalation at play here, the scene appears to exist solely for the sake of a punchline.

As part of her plan to get revenge on fellow classmate Chris, Cherryvale Academy student Jordan rides on horseback to Chris and her boyfriend Jim... and promptly flashes her bare chest – because all women ride horseback bra-less. Unfortunately for Jordan, Chris’ friend is there to steal Jordan’s shirt, forcing her to ride past the academy’s headmistress – and a bunch of other people – while topless. That probably could have gone better. It’s a back-and-forth of revenge acts and unexpected nudity that, while amusing, comes across as unnecessary.

There’s certainly a reason that this scene exists, but it’s not because of the story at hand. During the production of 2001’s “Swordfish,” the filmmakers were intent on having star Halle Berry appear topless in one scene. Berry agreed in exchange for an extra $500,000 on top of her $2 million fee, filming a brief scene wherein she lowers a book she’s reading and exposes her breasts while chatting with Hugh Jackman’s character. When it takes an extra fee to get extra nudity into a film, you know it’s forced. Even villains need to exercise... but why like this? Early in this sequel to the 1988 film “Die Hard,” our antagonistic ex-Special Forces officer Colonel Stuart takes some time to practice his martial arts moves while watching a news report. Reasonable enough, except Stuart – played by William Sadler – is entirely naked during his exercising. We can respect how fit and potentially dangerous Stuart appears, but the scene’s prolonged nature and occasional glimpses of Stuart’s rear are gratuitous at best. Do you agree with our list?
