VOICE OVER: Ty Richardson WRITTEN BY: Ty Richardson
“Grand Theft Auto” is one of the biggest gaming franchise of all time, so naturally multiple developers have paid tribute to it in their games. For this list, we're looking at the times GTA managed to get snuck into other games. We won't be including parodies or spoofs of GTA, only direct references. Our list includes "Mass Effect 2" (2011), "Max Payne 3" (2012), "Cyberpunk 2077" (2020), and more!

Cousins in a Heist

“Marvel’s Spider-Man” (2018) One of the last places we ever thought GTA would pop up was in a Marvel game, specifically 2018’s “Spider-Man” for PlayStation 4. When helping Carmen with a situation involving blackmail, you’ll need to crawl outside of an apartment building and take photos of the crooks inside. One of the criminals is named Niko, and he mentions his brother’s kid, Roman, is going to be their getaway driver. This connection is too obvious for GTA fans as it is a reference to “GTA IV” protagonist Niko Bellic and his cousin Roman.

“Bully” (2006) Though there are fan theories suggesting all of the Rockstar games are set within the same universe, we only need one justification to know that “Bully” and “GTA” are connected. As you explore outside Bullworth Academy, you’ll hear pedestrians exchanging their occasional random bits of dialogue. Chances are you’ll hear one woman mention something about Liberty City. What’s funny is that when picking a fight with one of the blue-vested, preppy kids, Jimmy might be asked if he’s ever been to New York. Wait, he means Liberty City, right? Or are they two different places? Ah, whatever.

“Mass Effect 2” (2011) Both “Mass Effect” and GTA have found themselves under fire from sensitive media outlets several times in the past. Apparently, BioWare had about enough of the fake outrage just as much as Rockstar did every time they released a new GTA. In “Mass Effect 2”, go to the Citadel and hang around the merchant for a bit. The merchant will mention something about a game called “Grim Terminus Alliance”. Clearly, this was put in to make fun of the “video games cause violence” crowd and the constant wave of crying GTA typically gets.

Voices of the Past

“Cyberpunk 2077” (2020) “Cyberpunk 2077” holds many references and nods to various franchises across movies, television, and yes, even video games. Thing is that GTA isn’t exactly set in a cyberpunk world, so seeing a nod to “San Andreas” caught us off guard. On a set of tracks lie two dead bodies. Loot them to obtain a transcription of their final moments. Turns out Little Smoke was munching on burgers while JC was trying to follow a train. The train was coming the other way, and the two were plowed over. Yep, it’s a double-reference - Little Smoke enjoyed his enormous meal and got to utter his famous line. “All you had to do was follow the damn train!”

“Tom Clancy’s The Division” (2015) Anyone who has played GTA IV can tell you the countless times Roman will call you up for bowling. The man just cannot get enough of the lane game! More importantly, the man won’t leave us alone and go bowl with someone else! Apparently, some of the folks at Ubisoft knew our pain and dropped a reference in “Tom Clancy’s The Division”. Somewhere on the map, you can find a bowling ball with a logo slapped on it that reads “Cousin” in fancy font. Only one man utters “cousin” and “bowling” in the same breath. Dammit, Roman! Leave us be!

“DRIV3R” (2004) In the early days of GTA, swimming was nothing but a child’s fantasy. Water meant instant death, and it’s why so many picked on Tommy Vercetti after playing “Vice City”. Even the devs behind the third “Driver” game had to poke fun at it. In the game, you’ll meet a character named Timmy Vermicelli (how subtle) who cannot swim to save his life. Instead, he uses a pair of water wings to keep himself above water. Honestly, this one is a little on the nose, but we still couldn’t help smiling at this detail.

“Max Payne 3” (2012) Now, this one is one of those “blink and you’ll miss it” moments, or in this case “don’t listen and you’ll miss it”...or something much more catchy to that effect. In “Max Payne 3”, listen closely to the death screams of your enemies. One scream in particular will sound a little more familiar than the rest. If you’ve played GTA IV, you’ll recognize one of the death screams is the same as Niko Bellic’s. You think maybe Niko got cloned a bunch of times and that’s why they sound like him? Hmm, perhaps there’s a fan theory of that.

Scoundrels Supporting Scoundrels

“Burnout Paradise” (2008) If there are two games that come to mind when you think of reckless driving, it’s “Grand Theft Auto” and “Burnout Paradise”. They’re vastly different kinds of games, though. So, it raises our eyebrows a bit seeing the two collide in “Burnout Paradise”. One of the repair shops in Paradise City is called “Brucie’s Used Autos”. This is a reference to Brucie Kibbutz in “GTA IV”, though it seems he’s had to downgrade from Brucie’s Executive Lifestyle Autos to a used car dealership. Guess life in Liberty City didn’t go too well, for Brucie boy.

“Manhunt” (2003) “Manhunt” shares several ties with GTA on account of how many assets are reused throughout, between vehicles and objects. However, we want to focus on the main enemies, the Smileys. These are the psychopaths you’ll encounter throughout the game, and if you’ve played GTA 2, then they should look a tad familiar. GTA 2 featured a faction known as “The Loonies” who live in a mental ward and drive cars with yellow winking faces on the roof. It's an aesthetic very similar to “Manhunt’s” Smileys, which has led to more folks believing both franchises are within the same universe. Again, those recycled vehicle assets only cement that belief further.

GTA: Vintage Edition

“Red Dead Redemption 2” (2018) We just could not end this video without talking about one of the “Red Dead” games, and in the case of “Red Dead Redemption 2”, there are several times between the wild Western game and the criminal gem franchise. One connection you’ll notice first hand is Dutch’s alias, “Aiden O’Malley”, which is the same name as another traitorous character whom Niko would meet in GTA IV. Then, there’s serial killer Edmund Lowry, whose name bears some resemblance to another serial killer in GTA IV named Eddie Low. And then, there’s the great Michael mystery. The voice actor for Michael De Santa, Ned Luke, has been credited for a voice role in “Red Dead Redemption 2”, though he never confirmed which character he is. Players have reported spotting NPCs that look eerily similar to Michael. However, no clear evidence has been found, and players are still searching for his appearance at the time of this video.
