Behind bars and beyond justice... Join us as we examine the most notorious penitentiaries plagued by systemic corruption worldwide. Our countdown includes facilities where bribery, abuse, and neglect have become standard practice, creating environments where money determines treatment and human rights violations go unchecked. Which prison shocked you the most? From Bellavista's deadly riots and guard-inmate symbiotic relationships to North Korea's secretive concentration camps, these institutions represent the darkest side of incarceration. We expose Thailand's Klong Prem and Bang Kwang scandals, Rikers Island's misconduct, and Guantanamo Bay's controversial detention practices. Is corruption inevitable in prison systems? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Bellavista Prison

Ecuador & Colombia

The corruption present within the Ecuadorian and Colombian prison systems has been well documented over the years, including within the walls of two separate prisons named Bellavista. Issues with staffing at the Bellavista in Santo Domingo, Ecuador have resulted in a shift within the balance of power, allowing the inmates to exercise the same sort of violent and intimidatory tactics they employ on the outside. Elsewhere, the Bellavista in Medellin, Colombia has seen a sort of symbiotic relationship between prisoners and guards, the latter of which have been accused of taking bribes in order to facilitate favors. Still more reports from Ecuador have discussed how the situation there has contributed, in part, to emergencies like the fatal prison riot from 2022.

Klong Prem Prison

Thailand

Not every tale of systemic institutional corruption hearkens back to a bygone era. Sometimes, headlines of that sort can be found right under our noses, as recently as November of 2025. This was when outlets such as The Thaiger reported on the alleged illegalities perpetrated by officials at Thailand’s Klong Prem Prison. Accusations that have already led to four dismissals, with over a dozen more of Klong Prem’s personnel under investigation. The probe into whether or not Klong Prem delivered preferential treatment to certain prisoners is part of a broader discussion into how this kind of behavior has seemingly infiltrated Thailand’s prison system, full stop.

Anísio Jobim Prison

Brazil

It didn’t just take an infamous series of violent prison riots back in 2017 to instigate a discussion into Brazil’s complex history with law enforcement. The country has unfortunately been dealing with governmental corruption for decades, although these riots did once again shine a light into the shadowy back dealings behind prison walls. Walls such as those of Anísio Jobim Prison, where over fifty inmates were killed, while its head administrator only faced suspension. There have also been allegations of financial misappropriation at the top, and bribery at the bottom… all of which leave Anísio Jobim with a severely tarnished reputation.

Rikers Island

United States

This infamous prison island off the east coast of the United States may be due for a forthcoming closure in 2027, but that doesn’t change its history of alleged corruption and misconduct. Rikers Island has been serving New York since 1932 as a prison, after initially being used for training purposes during the American Civil War. Yet, many have criticized Rikers for its alleged instances of mistreatment and neglect for those being detained on the island. Accusations that officers there have knowingly contributed to the influx of drugs and weapons to prisoners, or looking the other way with regards to medical fraud. A 2014 investigation at Rikers even resulted in 22 arrests, in an effort to try and curb illegal activity on the island.

Kamiti Maximum Security Prison

Kenya

The prison system of Kenya is another that’s been accused over the years of embodying a culture where corruption is allowed to thrive at institutions such as the Kamiti Maximum Security Prison in Nairobi. An environment where illegal contraband can flow freely, while financial records can allegedly be falsified or doctored without fear of reprisal. This also speaks nothing of the Kenyan Prison System’s legacy of detainee mistreatment and abuse, to the point where a filmed incident from 2008 went viral after being shown on Kenyan television. It all adds up to a situation that continues to ebb and flow, as greater attention is brought towards the country’s prison system as a whole.

Bang Kwang Central Prison

Thailand

We return to the Thai prison system once again, this time for Bang Kwang Central Prison in Nonthaburi Province. Allegations against this men’s prison have included a lot of the usual suspects: guards being easily bribed, inmates being mistreated, and head officials looking the other way as certain detainees are treated better than others at the prison. It’s been further alleged that the administration at Bang Kwang have intentionally deleted incriminating CCTV footage of their misconduct, although a 2025 raid did result in some suspensions being levied against those that took part in certain sectors of the prison’s corruption scandal.

Butyrka Prison

Russia

The Butyrka Prison building in central Moscow may only serve the Russian people as a remand center for detainees awaiting trial, but this doesn’t erase its prior, troubled history within the country. Butyrka used to serve as a central prison for Moscow, one that held inmates holding long-term sentences. It was during this era when allegations of neglect and outright abuse were levied against officials at Butyrka. Instances where prisoners weren’t allowed the medical care they needed, such as Sergei Magnitsky, who died within the walls of Butyrka for this very reason. Other accusations against Butyrka included a dividing line between affluent prisoners that could afford bribing the guards… and those that were forced to suffer.

Mumbai Central Jail a.k.a. Arthur Road Jail

India

It should be said that Mumbai Central Jail, also known by its older moniker of Arthur Road Jail, isn’t the only example of prison corruption within India. Other facilities, such as Taloja Central Jail and Thane Central Jail, have been included in this not-so-glamorous distinction. Arthur Road, meanwhile, inhabits many of the corrupt behaviors we’ve discussed so far, although it’s been further alleged that some inmates even face blackmail by those same guards taking their bribes. Blackmail that threatens physical violence against those that don’t try to grease the palms of their jailers.

Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp

It’s perhaps one of, if not the best known name on this list for North American audiences, an infamous American detention camp that’s faced stiff criticism of its policies over the years. Accusations that those held at Guantanamo Bay aren’t given their due process, are detained illegally and face varied degrees of torture and abuse. Organizations such as Amnesty International have also criticized a lack of oversight for Guantanamo as a whole, how the camp is essentially allowed to operate in a corrupt and illegal way without any manner of checks and balances against its power.

The North Korean Prison System

News and information regarding the North Korean Prison System is admittedly as shadowy and unreliable as every other aspect of the country’s secretive, isolationist existence. What we do know about the (allegedly) closed facilities like the Hoeryong concentration camp paint a picture that seems to fall in line with North Korea’s larger reputation with regards to human rights. A prison system that’s been said to exist as a historical relic of bygone wars, as opposed to any sort of modern detention center. Places where the imprisoned have no rights, and are barely existing above the level of animals. We may only possess the information given to us by those lucky enough to have escaped, but that knowledge is more than harrowing enough for a lifetime.
