The 10 HARDEST Super Mario Galaxy Bosses
10 Hardest Super Mario Galaxy Bosses
While the bosses in “Super Mario Galaxy” are nowhere near the hardest in video games, the duology still holds some foes that can surprise you. Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we’re looking at the hardest bosses found in the “Super Mario Galaxy” games.
Prince Pikante
“Super Mario Galaxy 2” (2010)
We’ll start off a little light. Mario faces off against Prince Pikante in Shiverburn Galaxy, a perfect name considering both the level and the boss’ arena. While the floor is made entirely of ice, meaning Mario either slips around while trying to walk or must quickly ice skate, Prince Pikante fires a barrage of fireballs out of his mouth and from the machine he rides on. Among the fireballs will be an occasional coconut, which Mario must deflect back at the Prince to deal damage. The tricky part is that the fireballs can form patches of lava around the ice. And if you stay too close, it’s likely the Prince will either burn or ram into you as he gets faster after taking damage.
King Kaliente
“Super Mario Galaxy” (2007)
Widely believed to be the father of Prince Pikante from the sequel, King Kaliente is fought in a somewhat similar fashion. He also fires groups of fireballs towards Mario with the occasional coconut, deflected back at him to deal damage. What makes him a little harder is his arena. The first fight against him isn’t so bad. But the second, fought in Bowser Jr.’s Lava Reactor, has an extra layer of annoyance. The platforms Mario stands on slowly lower into lava while you stand on them, forcing you to stay on the move if you don’t want to get burned. He also summons little fire minions to try and swarm you, making the fight a bit more overwhelming than the one against Prince Pikante.
Major Burrows
“Super Mario Galaxy” (2007)
Fought in the Gusty Gardens Galaxy, this gigantic, ill-tempered mole requires you to first ground pound near him to make him emerge, then spin attack as he tries to run away and before he can continue burrowing. It isn’t too bad; maybe you’ll get hit once or twice for mistiming your actions, but at least there’s health around. However, as is the case with several other bosses on the list, what earns him a spot is the Daredevil Comet version of his fight. Here, Mario only has one HP. So, those mistimes that were once no big deal can cause you to lose life after life. It takes a relatively simple fight and makes it much more frustrating.
Squizzard
“Super Mario Galaxy 2” (2010)
The boss of Slipsand Galaxy is fought in an arena mostly composed of sand that’s hard to move in and slowly pulls you towards him. You have to keep collecting Fire Flowers, since they have a time limit in this game, and hurl fireballs into Squizzard’s mouth whenever it’s open, while either breaking or dodging the boulders he throws at you. Five fireballs counts as a hit, and after three sets, he’ll be defeated. Once again, though, this fight is a lot harder during a Daredevil Comet. Not having the safety net of extra health is brutal. The third phase comes with cannons and giant bombs, so it’s easy to get hit and have to start all over.
Megahammer
“Super Mario Galaxy 2” (2010)
Operated by the pesky Bowser, Jr., Megahammer is a humongous mech who tries to swarm you with damage from several directions. Mario must use Yoshi to grab Bullet Bills barreling towards him, and launch them back into the boss’ weak points. And you do this while dodging other Bullet Bills, the larger Banzai Bills, and shockwaves produced by the boss’ hammer hands. It’s a little tricky to get the hang of at first, but nothing that isn’t manageable…until you unlock the Daredevil Comet version. Yeah, sorry if you grow tired of hearing that. But it really is what separates the mildly annoying from the maddeningly frustrating. Needless to say, Daredevil Megahammer will rack up a few deaths.
Kamella
“Super Mario Galaxy” (2007)
Somewhat like a suped-up Kamek, Kamella uses her wand to hurl fireballs and green shells at Mario. To damage her, you have to grab one of those shells and throw it back at her. While she does teleport, it isn’t too hard to land hits until she summons a couple of Magikoopas to help add to the firepower. Unless you take them out first, the stream of fireballs will guarantee they land a hit or two on you. Now imagine if you only had one HP…except you don’t have to imagine, because of course that fight exists. Yes, another Daredevil Comet fight, the spread of damage that comes your way can make it easy to make a mistake and lose your cool as you continue to die.
Boomsday Machine
“Super Mario Galaxy 2” (2010)
Bowser, Jr. sure does love his mechs. And the Boomsday Machine definitely earns its name. While avoiding the spinning fire rods and the projectiles that the mechanized tower spits towards him, Mario uses the Cloud Flower to ascend, and ground pound the glass protecting Bowser, Jr. After doing this twice, this gets harder as the mech’s lower section emerges from the ground, turning it into a tank and rolling around. Moving targets are obviously harder to hit. But you know what’s coming at this point: a Daredevil Comet fight. Trying to avoid Bowser, Jr.’s attacks while climbing higher, with having to refill your power-up after producing three clouds, can certainly cause some stress.
Fiery Dino Piranha
“Super Mario Galaxy” (2007)
A surefire way to make a boss harder is to add fire. That’s what makes the Fiery Dino Piranha much more troublesome than the original version, fought earlier in the game. You still have to spin attack its bulbous tail, knocking it into the boss’ head. But now, it periodically sets itself on fire. Meaning, you have to properly time your attacks to not get burned. Unfortunately. it moves faster the more damage it takes, shortening your window. And it eventually leaves a trail of fire behind it and spits up fireballs, giving you less room to maneuver on an already small planetoid. Hearing Mario howl in pain and uncontrollably flee from the fire makes it hard to stay calm.
Fiery Gobblegut
“Super Mario Galaxy 2” (2010)
Even worse than the Fiery Dino Piranha is Fiery Gobblegut in the sequel. A copy of another early boss made significantly harder with the addition of fire, this dragon can cause some serious rage. Mario has to pop the six bulges on its body, but he’ll get burned if he touches any other part of the boss’ body. Fiery Gobblegut also takes bites out of the planet, leaving brief pools of lava. And at the halfway point, it starts moving faster and raining down fire to create more pools of lava. You already don’t have much space, so the amount of hazardous terrain is a nightmare to deal with. Thankfully, neither the fiery versions of Dino Piranha nor Gobblegut get Daredevil Comet versions, because that would be just plain cruel.
Bouldergeist
“Super Mario Galaxy” (2007)
Despite this boss’ fantastic name, there are plenty of players who have been scarred by Bouldergeist. This evil spirit clad in rock armor will try to pierce you with spikes, smush you by throwing rocks, or simply punch you with stone fists. You have to grab hold of a bomb boo when it appears and spin it into Bouldergeist. Three boos will break the armor, and one will deal damage, which you must do twice. Again, tricky, but manageable. But what has earned Bouldergeist a reputation is its Daredevil Comet. This is the hardest one in either game, since the boss has so many ways to take away your one HP. It’s likely you’ll accidentally spin a bomb boo into something else, too, just elongating the whole stressful endeavor.
