Battling your way through Baldur's Gate 3 is no easy feat, especially when it comes to facing its toughest adversaries! From immortal devils and ancient dragons to cunning shapeshifters, we're breaking down the boss encounters that left players on the edge of their seats. Our countdown includes Raphael, Ketheric Thorm, Ansur, Gerringothe Thorm, Auntie Ethel, Grym, Orin The Red, The Netherbrain, Viconia DeVir, and The Spectator. Which fight made you reload the most? Let us know in the comments

The Spectator

Lets get straight into the bad times. There's no time to waste! There are two ways to run into a Beholder or Spectator: you can either accidentally wander into one deep in the Underdark, or crack open a mysterious iron flask you found in a locked chest like a GODDAMN FOOL! NEVER OPEN ANYTHING AND EXPECT GOODNESS. Regardless of the approach you take, you're in for misery. The Spectator might not have a ton of health, but its incredibly good at messing up your party, whether by inflicting fear or paralyzing someone at the worst possible moment. Luckily, these arent mandatory encounters, so if youd rather dodge, youve got that option.

Viconia DeVir

Viconia, a drow priestess and the Mother Superior of the Shar enclave, returns from the previous Baldur's Gate titles, though this time not as a companion, but a big baddy. In Baldurs Gate 3, she resides in the House of Grief in the Lower City, and the battle against her is no easy undertaking. Viconia can transform into a wolf, rapidly restore her health, and unleash the devastating Divine Intervention spell. Players can try to cast Divine Intervention first to gain the upper hand, but should remember it can only be used once per playthrough. Is this where you wanna burn it? Maybe not?

The Netherbrain

The final boss of Baldurs Gate 3 is also one of its most grueling challenges, and surprisingly, the toughest part might be simply reaching the Netherbrain itself, as it summons a red dragon and mind flayers to stall your partys advance. Thats like if the Supermarket made you find peak hour parking, just to win a shot at the real peak hour parking. Once at the gate, players must spend several turns activating the Netherstones to gain access. Speed-boosting tools like potions, Misty Step, or Dimension Door are essential to reach the portal quickly. Apart from that, the fight is simple... Well, apart from the insta-death disappearing floor. The first character to strike the Netherbrain each round will suffer a punishing counterattack, so victory means unleashing your most powerful spells and tactics before the brain wipes out a party already weakened from the fight outside.

Orin the Red

Orin, a shapeshifter and one of Baldurs Gate 3s primary antagonists, is unsurprisingly one of the games toughest opponents. She can even permanently kill a party member if youre not careful, making her a danger before the battle even begins. How the fight unfolds depends on whether youre playing as the Dark Urge origin. Without it, you face her as an avatar of Bhaal, entering her deadly Slayer form and bolstered to near-immortality. As a Dark Urge, you have the option to challenge her to a duel, which is a lovely option.

Grym

Deep within Grymforge lies its guardian, Grym, a gargantuan construct with a powerful strike and immunity to all types of damage. Im gonna be real with yall, I used synonym.com to find a cooler word than massive, and now Im probably gonna say gargantuan constantly through this list. To harm gargantuan Grym, the party must stay surrounded by lava for much of the fight to superheat the construct, enabling it to be damaged. Defeating Grym demands careful strategy and smart use of the gargantuan environment, as youll need to lure it to the center so the forges gargantuan hammer can strike.

Auntie Ethel

Gargantuan Auntie Ethel (Ill stop) offers not just one, but two challenging boss battles, with the toughest occurring in Act 1 when the party is still relatively weak. After navigating her lair and avoiding traps, the party will encounter Ethel deep underground. Shes a formidable opponent, capable of creating multiple illusory duplicates. Her tricks can make the fight especially brutal for low-level parties, but is an early victory that feels like a true victory, hooking us even more into this perfect game.

Gerringothe Thorm

During Act2, the party encounters several Thorm family members, each presenting a distinct challenge. One of the most memorable is GerringotheThorm, a rotund woman forged entirely of gold, who blocks the way unless you pay her still more gold. With the right dialogue choices you can bypass combat entirely, which Id advise... Because shes a massive golden woman. Gerringothes damage scales with how much gold each character carries, and she is supported by multiple GrimVisages who, if you dont know, are really f*cking annoying. Though hefty in appearance, she moves weirdly fast, and has a massive health pool. Huge, fast, and dense gross. Destroying each Visage knocks 100HP off her total, which makes the fight feel more achievable as it goes on.

Ansur

Ansur is an easily missed boss in Baldurs Gate 3, hidden deep beneath the city with no direct quests leading to him. Discovering him relies entirely on exploration, however its less of a pot of gold kinda find, and more a lifetime subscription to anal fissures kinda find. Ansur is an extremely powerful undead dragon, and the battle against him is loooooong. His ability Gather Power prolongs the fight by granting resistance to all damage types before he unleashes Stormheart Nova, a devastating area-of-effect attack capable of wiping out the entire party if you dont prep well for it.

Ketheric Thorm

As one of the Chosen of the Dead Three, Ketheric Thorm is the first major antagonist the party confronts in Baldurs Gate 3. His battle unfolds in three phases, two against Ketheric himself, followed by a final showdown after his transformation. Even before reaching that final phase, players must contend with waves of undead and mind flayers at his side. The entire encounter is a drawn-out ordeal that is especially punishing if the Nightsong was killed earlier. Use a long rest in the middle, youre gonna need it.

Raphael

The most challenging boss fight in Baldurs Gate 3 is arguably the showdown with Raphael. After infiltrating his House of Hope, the party must take on the cunning devil in a battle thats arguably just as punishing as it is thrilling. Raphael is backed by numerous minions, armed with plenty of tricks, and boasts a daunting 666 hit points. To overcome him, players should focus on destroying the Soul Pillars and make use of radiant damage. This is one that most players will flop and use a guide to beat, and you know what? I dont blame them.
