The story of Lizzie Borden, a Massachusetts woman charged and subsequently acquitted of murdering her father and stepmother with an axe, has become part of American folklore. If you’re especially curious, you can visit or even spend the night at the Borden family house. In 2018, the actress told Entertainment Weekly of how she had this macabre sleepover experience with her then-boyfriend, who had to leave early because of "a pressure on his chest." Sevigny didn't have the most peaceful night either, saying she heard 'weird moaning and groaning noises.' This eventually led to the creation of the biographical thriller “Lizzie”, produced by and starring Sevigny.

Theresa Saldana

Between co-starring in “Raging Bull” and earning a Golden Globe nomination for “The Commish,” Theresa Saldana went through an unbelievably traumatic experience. In 1982, Arthur Richard Jackson, a drifter from Scotland, stabbed the actress outside of her home. Jackson had developed an obsession with Saldana and continued to threaten her from prison. He had also found her home address by calling her mother and posing as Martin Scorsese’s assistant. Hospitalized for four months, Saldana became a passionate advocate of raising awareness of stalking. She also starred as herself in a TV movie about the experience.

Megan Mullally

The Emmy-winning actress and her husband, Nick Offerman, once lived in a house on the same property as one rented by retired NFL star O.J. Simpson for his then-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson. As you may know, he was later acquitted of her murder in a highly controversial verdict. While the house isn’t the same, Mullally is adamant it was, for a time, haunted by Brown Simpson. Appearing on Busy Philipps’ talk show in 2018, she claims her ghost would make sounds because Mullally's husband didn't 'get it.' However, according to Mullally, the disturbances ended after Offerman watched a documentary and the “American Crime Story” season about the case.

Eminem

More than a decade after having written arguably the definitive “obsessed fan” song and adding a new word to the lexicon with “Stan,” Eminem was repeatedly stalked by Matthew David Hughes. In 2019, Hughes broke into the rapper's former home, receiving a 90-day prison sentence. The following year, he broke into another one of Eminem's homes while he was there. He was sentenced to five years probation but then sent to prison on an unrelated assault charge. In 2024, Hughes was once again arrested after breaking into Eminem's Clinton Township home. The rapper testified that, due to the previous incident, he was sleeping in a padlocked room. Hughes was convicted once again, and sentenced to more than a decade in prison.

Keira Knightley

For three months, the Oscar-nominated actress was stalked by Mark Revill, a middle-aged musician. He also had another obsession: cats. Revill sent her pictures of cats and a USB drive with cat-inspired music he'd made. He'd also meow through her letterbox and hand-deliver her messages. At Revill's trial, Knightley testified about how much the experience had shaken her, saying she was “scared” every time she went outside and was particularly worried regarding the safety of her young daughter. Revill was given a suspended prison sentence and banned from contacting Knightley or being within 100 yards of her residence.

Miley Cyrus

While on tour in Europe, Cyrus rented a London apartment with her family that happened to be a former bakery. This might seem like a perfect recipe for a whimsy, but the pop star reports being more unsettled than charmed by the experience. Speaking to Elle U.K., Cyrus said she had disturbing dreams and visions during her time there. She claimed to have seen a boy "sitting on the sink,” saying she believed him to be the ghost of the son of the bakery owner. The family soon vacated the premises, instead taking up residence in the luxurious SoHo Hotel.

Justin Bieber

Few names were bigger in 2012 than Justin Bieber. He was even known by Dana Martin, an inmate in New Mexico serving a 978-year sentence since the year 2000 for sexual assault and murder. Despite his incarceration, he managed to have a tattoo of the pop star on his leg. Most disturbingly, he orchestrated a plot with an ex-inmate, Mark Staake, and his nephew, Tanner Ruane, to abduct and kill Bieber, along with his bodyguard and two others. The plot was eventually foiled by law enforcement, with Staake receiving a nine-year prison sentence and Ruane a five-year deferred sentence. While Bieber has never spoken publicly on the incident, we can’t imagine just how unnerving it was to have this plot revealed to him.

Taylor Swift

Arguably the biggest pop star of her generation, Taylor Swift has had numerous disturbing stalking incidents that could qualify for this list. However, we’re focusing on one individual, Roger Alvarado, who broke into Swift’s Manhattan townhouse on at least three separate occasions. In the first, he reportedly broke her door down with a shovel. The second time around, he made his way into her bedroom, using her shower and taking a nap in her bed. After receiving jail time, he was arrested once again after climbing a ladder and breaking a glass door. Swift, thankfully, wasn’t home during any of these incidents. That same year, however, she wrote an essay about how fear of violence had led to her carrying army grade bandage dressing.

Ashton Kutcher

On February 21, 2001, Kutcher, still a rising star best known for “That 70’s Show” and “Dude, Where’s My Car?” arrived at the home of 22-year-old fashion student, Ashley Ellerin. The two had met at a New Year’s Eve party the previous December and were planning on a date that evening. But when Kutcher arrived that night, no one seemed to be home. It was later revealed that Ellerin had been murdered, stabbed 47 times. It wasn’t until 2008 that Michael Gargiulo, a serial killer known as “The Hollywood Ripper,” was arrested and charged with her killing. Kutcher testified at his trial in 2019. In 2021, Gargiulo was sentenced to death.

Jodie Foster

In 1981, when Foster was a freshman at Yale, John Hinckley Jr. shot then-U.S. president Ronald Reagan in an assassination attempt. It was soon revealed that Hinckley had become obsessed with Foster after multiple viewings of “Taxi Driver” and was trying to impress her. While the Oscar-winning actress has made minimal comments on the incident, it has had an understandable impact on her. In 2024, she revealed that, amidst the media firestorm, she was in a college play. Foster noticed a man in the front row on two separate nights. She later learned that he had a gun on him. She said the experience may have led to her no longer wanting to do live theater.
