10 BEST Moms in Video Games
10 Best Moms in Video Games
Welcome to MojoPlays and today we’re giving video game Moms the recognition they deserve for raising their babies (and us) to lead good lives no matter the circumstances.
Your Mom
“Pokemon” Series (1998-)
This one might seem like an odd choice as Your Mom isn’t present for most of the game after the opening moments, but Your Mom throughout nearly every Pokemon adventure is the ultimate supportive parent we all wanted as kids. Not only does she completely support your dream of battling creatures against grown adults, but she cheers you on throughout your adventure and is always happy to heal you and your Pokemon when you stop by for a visit. She gives you the freedom to make your own choices despite typically only being ten years of age and is quick to remind you of the dangers of the world and make sure you have everything you need before setting out on your adventure. When we finally complete our goal of becoming the very best, there’s no one more proud and we’d want to tell first other than our Mom.
Rosalina
“Super Mario Galaxy” (2007)
The Immortal Queen of the Cosmos, not only is Rosalina not your traditional queen, she’s also not your traditional mother. The adopted mother of all Lumas, Rosalina cares for all the stars in the galaxy, raising them from tiny Lumas into their eventual transformations into the different aspects of the cosmos. She is an incredibly caring, doting parent and teacher, taking time to make sure every Luma feels loved and appreciated and given this is her role for all eternity, she is also incredibly patient. She has transformed her Comet Observatory into a home for these Lumas and the little stars clearly adore her, frequently calling her “Mama”. We thank you for your caring nature and eternal patience Rosalina.
Elmyra Gainsborough
“Final Fantasy VII: Remake” (2020)
A mother’s instinct is always to protect her child above all else and that’s exactly what xref Ifalna did when managed to escape from Hojo’s lab to spare her daughter Aerith from the same experiments she was subjected to. Near death, she used the last of her strength to give Aerith the best chance at a life which she found with Elmyra, who discovered Aerith with Ifalna’s body, immediately took the girl in, knowing nothing about her past, only that she needed someone to care for her. As someone who always wanted a child Elmyra accepted Aerith as her own daughter, even after learning why SHINRA was so desperate to find her. Elmyra protected Aerith for years until the moment she could no longer stop Aerith from embracing her destiny, even knowing the dangers that lay ahead for her adopted daughter.
Dr. Bridgette Tenenbaum
“Bioshock” (2007)
Tenebaum is likely the most resistant mother on our list as she didn’t begin with any maternal instincts towards the young girls or Little Sisters she experimented on. However, even her cold and calculated scientific mind could only resist the natural call of motherhood for so long. Responsible for the Little Sisters predicament, Tenenbaum becomes the girls’ fierce protector and seeks to save them from the effects of her experiments, pleading with both Jack and the player to spare her “Little Ones” from becoming the true abominations she had initially created them to be. Her desire to cure the Little Sisters of a disease that she herself inflicted on them makes her the most tragic of motherly figures on our list, and her eventual redemption as their savior is even more heartwarming if you manage to save the Little Sisters and unlock the good ending.
“Yennefer
“The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt” (2015)
We’ve already seen a few adoptive mothers on the list and this is a trend that will continue. Geralt and Yennefer already had decades worth of history between them before Geralt adopted Ciri through the “Law of Surprise”, and through this mutual history, became an unofficial mother to Ciri. Per Geralt’s request, Yennefer trained Ciri how to use her powers while Geralt focused on her sword skills. Like any mother and daughter, they would routinely be at odds with one another, but Yennefer still became Ciri’s fierce protector, keeping her safe and hidden from those after Ciri’s powers. With no possibility for children of her own, Ciri became Yennefer’s daughter in everything except blood, Yennefer would even often refer to Ciri as her daughter, the pair became an anchor for each other during times of uncertainty and danger. Yennefer proves true family isn’t always through blood.
Freya
“God of War” (2018) & “God of War Ragnarok” (2022)
Freya is undoubtedly one of the most tortured mothers on our list. She gave up almost her entire life to protect her child, only for him to turn around and resent her for doing all she could to keep him safe. Even before their final confrontation, Freya clearly felt a motherly bond with young Atreus, guiding Kratos to be a better father to his young son. Freya’s love for her son was so strong she was even willing to give up her life if it brought Baldur peace. Consumed by grief after Baldur’s death, Freya eventually finds comfort in filling in the motherly role for Atreus, looking after the growing demi-god and caring for him as her own. We don’t always get to choose our family, sometimes, the universe chooses them for us, and Atreus ended up needing Freya just as much as she needed him.
Mama
“Cooking Mama” (2006-2022)
There really is nothing like Mama’s home cooking. We can even tell a dish was prepared by our moms just by taste and smell. Mom’s cooking makes us feel safe and brings us a special kind of comfort that’s impossible to recreate. Cooking Mama not only makes us delicious meals, but she patiently shows us step by step how to recreate her recipes so that we can one day make the same dishes for children of our own. Just like anyone in the kitchen she can let her temper get the best of her, but no matter how many times we mess up, when we get it right, she’s the one who’s the most excited to see our accomplishments and encourages us to try making even more difficult but also even more delicious recipes the next time. Cooking with Mama is just as stressful, chaotic and fun as it should be.
Toriel
“Undertale” (2015)
Toriel truly is the G.O.A.T. Your immediate protector when you arrive at the start of Undertale. Her protective instincts make incredibly passionate about nurturing you and keeping you safe, making sure you understand how scary the world can be and you always have lots of butterscotch cinnamon pie and even a school plan already in place. Her insistence that you remain with her is merely her desire to keep you safe from the Underground and all its hidden dangers. Even if you mistreat her, her undying devotion to your well-being is at the heart of her actions, especially if it seems like she’s stopping you from leaving her care. Her compassion helps lead you down the path of the pacifist, the true and best ending in Undertale, and demonstrates the kind of person you should be by showing others the same kindness she showed you.
Clementine
“The Walking Dead” (2012-19)
At the end of the world, family is a hard thing to come by and finding people you can trust is an even scarcer resource than food. Having watched Clementine’s father/ daughter bond with Lee come to a tragic end in season 1 of Telltale’s The Walking Dead, we were understandably apprehensive about seeing Clementine build new bonds as the adoptive mother of baby AJ, especially barely being a teenager herself. However, Clementine more than rose to the occasion, fully taking on the role of AJ’s motherly figure and raising him to become a capable survivor in the zombie apocalypse. Motherhood proves to be a learning experience for both, but it's through their bond and growing relationship that manages to endure in the worst of times and although still a child herself, Clementine’s love for AJ gives her motherly wisdom far beyond her young years.
Grace
“Resident Evil Requiem” (2026)
After her abduction, Grace’s only concern was survival. However, all of that changed when she found young Emily in her glass prison in a backroom of the Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center. The poor blind girl has been left all alone after being experimented on and almost immediately Grace feels protective of her, looking for a way for the two of them to escape. Even though Grace is downright terrified, her concern quickly evolves from saving herself to caring for Emily and saving her as she does everything in her power to protect the poor girl, repeatedly saving her from the infected staff and residents and even most horrifically, from “The Girl”. Not only was Grace Emily’s savior, but Emily helped her overcome her own trauma and in turn saved Grace and became the unexpected family they both needed and deserved.
