10 90s Shows and Movies Being Rebooted in 2025

Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for upcoming reboots and revivals of classic 90s media.

#10: “Baywatch” (1989-2001)

Critics might have hated 2017’s “Baywatch” movie, but they can’t deny that it was a box office success. It inspired Fremantle Productions to release remastered, HD versions of all 242 episodes of the original show, and to start mulling over a reboot of the series. Last year, the company reached a deal with Fox to air the new show, which promises to feature just as many bikini-clad beach bods as its predecessor. It will be in good hands under writer and showrunner Lara Olsen – she already has experience writing for a reboot of a 90s favorite, “90210.” No release date has been announced yet, but the show is already in pre-production.

#9: “Practical Magic” (1998)

This dark rom-com fantasy stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as witchy sisters plagued by a family curse that kills any man they fall in love with. It was based on a 1995 novel by Alice Hoffman. More than 25 years later, Hoffman published a sequel called “The Book of Magic.” Now, Warner Bros. is following suit with a film sequel. The 1998 movie wasn’t a hit with critics, but they did praise the chemistry of the cast. Luckily the new film will bring back all of the original leads, including Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest as the sisters’ aunts. It’s scheduled for release in September 2026.

#8: “Darkwing Duck” (1991-92)

This superhero parody first swooped across our screens in 1991 and for three seasons, he was a staple of the after-school cartoon lineup. Now, the terror that flaps in the night is returning to Disney+. Rumors of a revival had been circulating for years, and in July 2024, original “Darkwing” creator Tad Stones confirmed that it’s really happening. Voice acting legend Jim Cummings recently revealed that he’s returning to reprise his role as the title character. The new storyline will take a page from “The Dark Knight Returns,” following an older Drake Mallard, and his daughter Gosalyn will be all grown up.

#7: “Anaconda” (1997)

If you want to spend Christmas Day watching a giant snake try to eat Jack Black and Paul Rudd, you’re in luck. Although the 1997 camp classic already boasts three sequels and a crossover with “Lake Placid,” the new movie will be a true reboot of the franchise. While the original film was unintentionally hilarious, with Black and Rudd on board, it’s a safe bet that the new version will be more of a horror-comedy. Writer-director Tom Gormican also has plenty of experience creating laughs, since his latest projects include “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” and “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.” Anaconda is slated for release on December 25.

#6: “Cape Fear” (1991)

John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel “The Executioners” has been adapted to film twice. The first was 1962’s “Cape Fear,” starring Robert Mitchum as deranged killer Max Cady and Gregory Peck as lawyer Sam Bowden. In 1991, the movie was remade with Robert De Niro in the role of Cady and Nick Nolte as the lawyer. Now, it’s getting turned into an Apple TV+ series with a star-studded cast. Javier Bardem – who gave audiences chills as hitman Anton Chigurh – will take the lead as Max Cady. Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson are set to play the Bowdens. Filming is currently underway, so expect to see this one hit your screens sometime next year.

#5: “Captain Planet and the Planeteers” (1990-96)

What’s better than a reboot of your favorite environmentally conscious cartoon? How about a live-action version? Rumors of a non-animated revival of “Captain Planet” have been circulating for nearly a decade. In 2016, Glen Powell was in talks to write and star in it, but the plan fell through. Then, in July 2025, Netflix officially signed on to distribute the new show, which will be co-produced by Leonardo DiCaprio’s studio Appian Way. Tara Hernandez will be the lead writer – you might know her from her work on “The Big Bang Theory” and “Young Sheldon.” No word yet on who will play the buff blue baddie, but they’ll certainly have no shortage of contemporary climate-related storylines to work with.

#4: “Cliffhanger” (1993)

We weren’t the only ones who were traumatized by that original opening scene, right? Like many of the IPs on our list, there have been rumors of a “Cliffhanger” revival for years. TriStar announced a sequel in 1994 which never happened. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, new scripts were written and discarded, and various stars and directors signed on, then dropped out. In May 2023, an official sequel was announced with Sylvester Stallone back in the lead role. In October 2024, we learned that the sequel had been turned into a reboot, Stallone wouldn’t be in it, and Lily James would star instead. Filming started that month, so it looks like a new “Cliffhanger” is really happening.

#3: “It” (1990)

The upcoming HBO series “IT: Welcome to Derry” will be a prequel to the 2017 movie. It will also be the first “It” TV show we’ve gotten since the 1990 miniseries starring Tim Curry. The new show will take place in 1962, in line with the 27-year cycles of Pennywise’s appearances. Andy Muschietti, who directed the two most recent films, is developing the series alongside his sister Barbara. According to him, it will be even more intense than the movies. Bill Skarsgård is back as the Dancing Clown, and Taylour Paige and Jovan Adepo star as a young couple who’s just moved to town. “IT” will be hitting our screens just in time for Halloween.

#2: “Blade” (1998)

The MCU has been teasing us with a Blade comeback for years. In 2019, Mahershala Ali was announced as the new face of the character. He made his first appearance – sort of – in the form of a voice-only cameo in the post-credits scene of 2021’s “Eternals.” Wesley Snipes returned as Blade in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which sees the daywalker trapped in the Void alongside other seemingly abandoned Marvel characters. Production on a stand-alone “Blade” film was pushed back repeatedly in 2022 and 2023. A release date was set for September 2024, then moved to February 2025, then to November 2025. As of now, we don’t know for sure when the dhampir will be back on our screens, but here’s hoping it’s soon.

#1: “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (1997-2003)

If you’ve been dying for more vampire butt-kicking on your screens since the series ended in 2003, we’ve got good news. Sarah Michelle Gellar is returning as Buffy Summers, but she’s no longer the Slayer. That honor goes to newcomer Ryan Kiera Armstrong, while Gellar will play a mentor figure like Giles. The show will also introduce a whole new Scooby Gang and, presumably, a new slate of vampires, demons, and other supernatural beasties. One person from the original show who won’t be returning is Joss Whedon. The series will air on Hulu, and the pilot started filming in August 2025. There’s no official release date yet, but we can probably expect to see it sometime in 2026.
