Welcome to MojoPlays, and today, we will be going over everything we know about the upcoming “Grand Theft Auto VI”.
Setting
This is perhaps the oldest bit of the game we’ve known about since GTA VI was getting teased, but for those who are still unaware, GTA VI will be set in the ravenous and vibrant Vice City. Yes, we are going back to a classic location we’ve already been to twice between “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City” and the PSP spin-off, “Vice City Stories”. The thing about the city based on Miami, Florida is that we will be experiencing an entirely new time period within Vice City. Take it from a native Floridian, every little bit we’ve seen from GTA VI’s teaser is basically modern Florida from various corners of the state blended into one place. This time around, Vice City may not just be the Miami-inspired nightclub scene. From the looks of it, we’ll be able to access mash-ups of countrysides and swamplands based on Myakka and Ocala as well as get a taste of suburban life you’d expect from cities like Bradenton and Palm Beach County. Yeah, don’t expect too much neon like we saw in the other games.Characters
Another open secret we’ve known about GTA VI is the character, or characters, we’ll be playing as. At the time of this video, we don’t really know much about Jason. He makes up one of the two protagonists we’ll be controlling. But what most folks are interested in (for various reasons) is the other protagonist, Lucia. Despite what some outlets may tell you, no, Lucia is not the first female protagonist in the series; that spot belongs to the original ladies of the first GTA game - Divine, Mikki, Katie, and Ulrika. Of course, folks are gravitating towards Lucia before we even have a clue as to what her story is. Although, judging by the teaser trailer, we can glean onto an idea or two. Whether it’s about the struggle in becoming a social media influencer or maintaining relevance in a constantly evolving space like social media, we wouldn’t be surprised if Lucia’s story ties into that topic. Heck, maybe a waning fame is what leads her and Jason into a life of crime. And what a way to segue into our next entry.Topics
One thing that the teaser trailer makes clear is that social media is most likely going to have a significant presence throughout GTA VI, and we don’t just mean in sharing our personal clips online. Since 2020, society has begun to reflect on the ramifications social media has on the world. We have learned ways it can help individuals, ways it can be exploited for vile acts, ways it can sway public opinion, and ways social media fame can be lost just as quickly as it is obtained. In addition to the standard in-game engine shots every game uses, we see a handful of shots where captions are underneath with “Follow” buttons, icons and formats we’re used to seeing on platforms like Tiktok, Instagram, and YouTube. That said, expect heavy themes involving sensationalism, consumerism, and the unseen evils of technology.Budget
Now, we have absolutely no idea what GTA VI’s budget is. Rockstar Games has not said a word on the matter, and we may never know about it. However, it is important to note that the company has become one of the biggest and richest companies within the gaming industry. “Grand Theft Auto V” sold more than two hundred ten million copies by the end of 2024 while dominating the sales charts of numerous digital storefronts consistently since 2013. GTA V also saw the biggest launch of a product in entertainment history with 2018’s “Red Dead Redemption II”, another Rockstar product, becoming the second-biggest. That said, given the amount of time that has passed and the insane revenue generated from both titles, we wouldn’t be surprised if Rockstar spent well over a billion dollars on GTA VI’s development. Honestly, it might go down as the most expensive game ever made in video game history, and we’re living in an era where most companies are spending nearly half a billion dollars already.Platforms
The ninth generation of console gaming has shown that the eighth generation of consoles might be here to stay for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, not every PS4 and Xbox One owner is going to get to play the same titles as PS5 and XS owners. If you want to play GTA VI at launch, you are going to need to buy one of those consoles as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series XS are the only two platforms that are planned for launch. We don’t even have information on when PC players will be able to play the game, which is understandable considering Rockstar’s rocky history with PC releases. And this should go without saying, but don’t expect this to run on Switch 2 at all.Release
“When is the release date?” That’s the million-dollar question everyone wants an answer for. Sadly, Rockstar Games and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, have been really coy about the whole thing. At first, Take-Two was saying that GTA 6 will be released before “Borderlands 4”. Then, it was, “Oh we’re on track to launch in 2025, but we may slip to 2026 if we need to.” Now, it's “oh, we need to respect the consumer’s time to play other games”. Yeah, it’s been all kinds of mixed messaging. What’s more frustrating is that because they won’t pick a date or even a window, other companies are now holding off on announcing their release dates out of fear of GTA 6 eating up their sales. Guys, it’s GTA. This franchise has made so much money that you could pick literally any date to launch, and it will still make an astronomical amount of money. It could drop on a Monday or a Saturday, weekdays that practically never see new games being dropped, and GTA VI would still make the same amount of money. So, just pick a date already! What are we waiting for?Online
As if the sales of GTA V weren’t enough, “GTA Online” has become an insanely big cash cow for Rockstar Games. Hell, there are people who bought GTA V for the sole purpose of only ever playing the online mode and have still not touched any portion of the single-player campaign. That said, we all know that GTA VI is going to have an online mode. To not include one would almost render GTA VI as a fool’s errand. Why spend all this time and money making this long-awaited sequel only for it to not have some way of printing money when the previous game did? Like we mentioned already, GTA V made an absurd amount of money and continues to do so in spite of the upcoming game. If we don’t get an online mode at launch, it’s safe to assume we’ll get one sometime within the first year.Leaks, Leaks, Leaks
There are several games that have gotten leaked almost entirely, but few have ever suffered leaks as massive as GTA VI. Obviously, we can’t show anything from those leaks, and we aren’t going to go over anything in case some of you would rather surprise yourselves. But with the amount of info flying around between hackers and supposed “insiders”, we recommend keeping your wits about you. Leaks happen all of the time, and the ones we’ve seen so far are all from super outdated builds of GTA VI. And just like in movies and TV, pieces of games wind up on the cutting room floor all the time. That said, whatever little tidbit you hear about what GTA VI is supposedly going to do, take it with a grain of salt. What are you hoping to see come out of GTA VI?
